'The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in clamps of the parallel jaw type, l
and has for its primary object to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a device of this character comprising a novel construction and arrangement whereby, after the jaws have been adjusted as desired, said device may be conveniently used with one hand, thus leaving the other hand free to be used for inserting and removing the pieces to be held. Y
Another very important object of the invention is to provide a parallel jaw clamp of the aforementioned character which embodies unique means for closing the jaws for irmly gripping the work.
Other objects of theinvention are to provide an improved parallel jaw clamp which will be comparatively simple in construction, strong, durable, highly eiicient and reliable in use, compact, light in weight and which may be manufactured at low cost.
All of the foregoing and still further objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent from a study of the following specication, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings wherein like characters of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, and wherein:
Figure 1 is a view in proved parallel jaw cl-amp constructed in accordance with the present invention.
Figure 2 is a view principally in longitudinal section through the device.
Y Figures 3 and 4 are views in transverse section, taken substantially on the lines 3-3 and 4 4, respectively, of Figure 1.
Figure 5 is a detail view in `perspective of the movable jaw.
Figure 6 is a detail View in perspective of the stationary jaw.
Figure 7 is a detail view in perspective of the lever.
Referring now to the drawings in detail, it will be seen that the embodiment of the invention which has been illustrated comprises a pair of opposed, coacting, parallel stationary and movable jaws I and 2, respectively. Extending rearapertured rib 5. An angular lever 6 straddles the rib 5 and is pivotally connected thereto at I.
side elevation of an im- It is believed that the ` Adjustingscrews 8 and ,9 connect the jaws vI and 2. The screw 8 is loosely and rotatably anchored at It in the stationary jaw I and intermediate portion of the screw 9 is threaded through of the movable jaw 2 and anchored at II in the lever movable jaw 2. The the rear end portion has one end rotatably 6 at a point adj-acent the pivot 1 thereof.
A compression coil spring I2 extends between the rear end portion of the lever 6 and the handle S for setting the jaws I and 2 on the work. A thumb screw Ii3 is threadedly mounted in the clampiunctions will be readily apparent from a consideration of the foregoing. Briefly, the jaws i and 2 are initially adjusted as desired in the usual manner through the medium of the .screws 3 and 9. While holding the device in one hand, the lever 6 is swung toward the handle 3 against the tension of the spring I2. With the other hand,
under the influence of the coil spring I2 the members 9, 2 and 8 will be rocked relative to the stationary jaw l in thumb screw I3. To release the work it is only necessary to move the lever 6 tow-ard the handle 3 against the influence of the spring I2 with one hand and remove the work from between the jaws with the other hand.
Vtion to the through the movable jaw in spaced parallel relation to the nist-mentioned adjusting screw, the point of the second-mentioned adjusting screw being seated in the socket, and a compression spring extending between the end of the handle and the end of the lever remote from the pivot whereby the clamp jaws will be advanced toward closed position under yielding pressure. handle in longitudinal alignment with said stationary jaw, an adjusting screw rotatably and loosely mounted in and extending perpendicularly through the stationary jaw, a movable jaw threadedly carried by the adjusting screw for movement toward or away from the stationary jaw. a lever pivoted at one of its ends to the stationary jaw near its junction with the handle, said lever having a socket intermediate its ends adjacent its pivot, an adjusting screw threadedly extending through the movable jaw in spaced parallel relanrst-mentioned adjusting screw, the
