Be it known that I, CHARLES B. Bacon- HART, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Cleveland Heights, county of Cuyahoga, and State of Ohio, have invente a new and useful Improvement in Holders for Clotheslines and the like, of which the following is a specification, the princi le of the invention being herein explaine and the best-mode in which I have contemplate so as to distinguish it from other inventions.

' The present improvements, relating, as holders, have regard more particularly to holders on the order of a reel or spool whereon a clothes-line or other cable or wire may be conveniently wound, and in turn unwound therefrom. One object of the invention is to provide. a device of this sort which may be readily carried about and operated with one hand. At the same time the device provides a self contained holder for the line, whatever the character or use of the latter, so that such line can be stowed away without danger o becoming tangled u or snarled.

To the accomplis ment of the foregoing and related ends, said invention, then, consists of the means hereinafter fully describedand'particularly pointed out in the claims, the annexed drawing and the following desori tion setting forth in detail certain mec anism embodyingv the invention, such disclosed means constituting, however, but one of various mechanical forms in which the principle of the invention may be used.

As clearly shown in the aforesaid drawing, my improved holder consists, in effect,

of a hollow or tubular spool, the body 1 of which is preferably, alt ough not necessag rily, of frusto-conical form. The ends of such bodyare rovided with flanges2 and 3 of correspon ingdiameters, i. .e. the flange 2 on the smaller end of the body is of less diameter than the flange 3 at the larger end. flransversely secured within thebody'l is a handle 4 adapted to be conveniently and firmly grasped by one hand of the user, such a Fig. 2.

hand being inserted from the larger end of the holder, and such handle being preferably located somewhat more closely adjacent such end than the opposite smaller end, (see The handle 4 may be conveniently made of wood turned to the form shown, or of sheet metal, while the body and flanges of the holder are preferably fashioned of. sheet holder in its entirety is light and easy to manipulate.

The clothes-line, cable, wire or the like is of course wound about the body 1 between flanges 2 and 3 in familiar fashion, the inner end 5 of such line being knotted and held in a V-shaped notch 6 formed in the body adjacent the flange 2. I therefore particularly point out and distinctly claim as my invention 1. In a device of the character described, the combination-with a hollow flanged spool, adapted to have a line or the like Wound thereabout, of a handle attached tosaid spool transversely of the axis and adjacent one end thereof, for bracin the same and permitting free manipulation thereof.

2. In a device of the character described, the combination with a hollow flanged spool, adapted to have a line or the like wound thereabout, of a handle attached to said spool transversely of the axis and adjacent one end thereof, for bracing the same and permitting :h'eemanipulation thereof, and means adjacent the respective ends of said spool adapted to engage and retain such line.

3. In a device of the character described, the combination with a hollow flanged spool, adapted to have a line or the like wound thereabout, of a handle attached to said spool transversely of the axis and adjacent one end thereof, for bracing the same and permitting free manipulation thereof, means adjacent one end of said spool adapted to engage and retain an end of such line, and means adjacent the other end of said spool adapted to engage and retain such line at an intermediate point.

4:. In a device of the character described the combination with a hollow spool oii frusto-conical form, flanged at each end and adapted to have a line wound thereabout between such flanges, of a handle secured within said spool transversely of the axis thereof, said spool being formed adjacent its smaller end with a notch adapted to engage and retain a knotted end of said line, and means on the flange at the larger end of said spool adapted to engage and retain the line at an intermediate point.
