To all whom it may concern: I

Be it known that I,'WALTER P. COLEMAN, a citizen of the United States, residin at Atlanta, in the county of Fulton and tate of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety Razor Guards, of which the following is a speci-' fication.

In the process of shaving it is customary to manipulate the razor with one hand while the'other hand is utilized'to stretch the skin upon the surface immediately to be shaved for the purpose of preventing the surplus duced b the razor, most frequently resulting in cutting unless eat care is exercised.

This rolling up of t e loose flesh takes place regardlessof the type of razor employed, but is especially attended with disastrous results in theuse of what is knownas the straight or old fashioned razor.

Resort has been 'had in the past to the use of the so-called safety razor to eliminate at least partially the tendency for one to cut himself, but even with this type the same objection above referred to prevails, that is, the flesh rolls up under pressure of the guard, usually forming safety razor construction, 1n fact, it is no-- ticeabl greater than where the old type of razor aving no guard is used. However, the advantages of the safety razor predominate this disadvantage and we now have special guards which are applicable to the old or straight type of razor, so-called, so as -to convert them into the safety t pe.

' With this in view the object o the present invention is to provide a device which is associated with the razor blade, preferably in the form of an attachment, and whichacts upon the flesh to stretch the same just in advance ofthe blade edgequite similar to the what I term an extension operating in advance of the blade edge protector, the former to roll up the surplus flesh and stretch it a part of the to the-length of the razor blade e one side the body is formed with a p urality approximate the edge of the blade the w from the oint where the latter is firmly pressed an resists its movement.

Theedge tmaybeinchgnment guwi" ard extension and which. latter edge T with 3 as shown in Fig.' 4, or as shown in Fig. 5, the edge 4 may be slightly offset from the plane of the edge 3, which latter edge in the operation of shaving is substantially equivalent to theguard edge of the ordinary safety razor guard used with this type. of razor. The edge 3, in other words, has a limitingtendency in the usual construction as far as pressure against the flesh is concerned, whereby to prevent cutting of the flesh accidentally. But in these usual constructions as above premised, it is still a necessary matter to stretch the skin away from this pressure edge or the cutting is likely to take place. On the contrary, with my device the edge 4 takes care of this surplus flesh by rolling it in advance of and away from the blade edge, which action is somewhat resisted by the light pressure "of the edge 3 upon the flesh. 'T'he result of a movement ofthe article oven'the flesh is that the latter is stretched between the two edges 3 and 4 so that the razor bladewill actually operate upon. a substantially flat or smooth surface. I particularly construct the edges 3 and 4 of this guard to-insure smoothness so that the device will move with facility over the flesh without too great frictional resistance. The body of the guard at the point 5 is bent inwardly slightly so as to properly position the edge of the blade in slightly spaced relation to the edge 3, and

the metal between this point and said edge as well as between the edges 3 and 4 both spaces of which. are bowed outwardly, is cut out with a series of openings or apertures 6'. Obviouslythe pressure of the operator upon the edge 4 of the guard may be increased to Such an extent as to increase the space between the cutting edge of the blade and the prewure edge 3 of said guard to thereby control the cutting action of the blade so as to permit of obtaining a. close shave or one not so close.

With this construction it will beapparent that the invention renders the safety razor doubly safe against accidental cutting of the flesh and relieves the operator of the necessity of stretching the skin with his free hand. It will furthermore be understood that the protector guard may be readily re moved from the razor and applied in reverse osition so as to enable shaving of both sides of the face, and for cleansing purposes as customary. The additional features of construction are of a simple 7 character and do not materially increase the cost of manufacture of the guard.

What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is 1. The combination with a razor blade, of a'guard device therefor arranged at one side of said blade and formed with a faceengaging edge intermediate its length extending parallelwith and in close proximity to the razor blade cutting edge, and a second face-engaging edge slightly spaced from the first mentioned edge and disposed in advance of the razor blade edge, said two edges being co-extensive in length with the razor blade edge.

2. A new article of manufacture comprising a slip on guard attachment for razor blades having at one side gripping means for holding the attachment upon a razor in juxtaposed relation to its blade and at its other side spaced edges free from the first-mentioned side and engageable with the flesh, one substantially in advance of the blade edge and the other approximate the blade edge.

3. A new article of manufacture comprising a guard attachment for razor blades having at one side gripping means for holding the attachment upon a razor in juxtaposed relation to its blade and at its other side spaced edges engageable with the flesh, one substantially in advance of the blade edge and the other approximate the blade edge,-the material between the said spaced edges being bowed outwardly from the plane of said edges.

4. A new article of manufacture compris ing a safety guard for 'razor blades having gripping flanges at one side thereof and atits other side a pair of spaced longitu dinally extending edges free from the firstmentioned side and adapted to contact with the surface of the flesh. in advance of the blade edge, one of said edges being offset with respect to theplane of the body of theto hold the guard in cooperative relation.
