Application filed May 10,
T all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Josnrrr D. Boz, a citizen of the United States, residing at Coshocton, in the county of Coshocton and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Attachments for Squares, of which the following is a specification.
Thisinvention relates to attachments for squares and has for an object the provision of means whereby a compass may be removably secured to a trisquare or like instrument for the purpose of finding various angles and directions, the invention being especially useful in laying off buildings.
Another object of the invention isthe provision of an attachment of this character which may be cheaply constructed, being stamped or cut outof sheet metal and bent to the required shape so as to provide a compass holder and means for removable and frictional engagement with the square.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention further includes the following novel features and details of construction, to be hereinafter more fully described, illustratedin the accompanyingdrawings and pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a plan view showing a fragmentaryportion of a trisquare with the invention applied thereto.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1. I
Fig. 3 is a similar view on the line 33 of Fig. 1. i
Fig. 4: is a view looking at the edge of the attachment, the same being removed from the square.
Fig. 5 is a view of one of the blanks from which the invention is formed.
Fig. 6 is a view of the other blank.
Referring in detail to the drawings, wherein likecharacters of reference denote corresponding parts, the reference character 10 indicates a portion of an ordinary trisquare to within the invention is shown as applied. a
The invention which is constructed of sheet metal comprises a holder 11 which is designed to receive a compass 12 and for this purpose there is provideda blank shape shown in Fig. 5 of the drawings. This blank includes a relatively wide central portion 13, from each end of which extends re duced neck portions 1 1, the projecting longitudinal edges of the central portion 13 providing flanges 15 for engagement around Specification of Letters Patent.

the compass edges, the. formation being effected'by bending the blank along its longitudinal center. At the outer ends of each of the reduced neck portions 14 there is provided laterally extending wings 16 which are bent to provide right angularly disposed channeled members 17.
Positioned within these channeled members 17 is a right angular channel member 18, the latter being formed of the blank shown in Fig. 6, which blank is notched intermediate its ends as shown at 19 to provide miter joints for the side flanges of the member 18. This member 18 serves to connect the inner ends of the channeled members 17 and in order to hold the members 17 and 18 associated, they are each provided with engaging grooves or depressions 20 and 21 respectively. These grooves or depressions extend inwardly and in addition to holding the members associated to provide a frictional grip upon the opposite faces of the blade 10 and as the device is formed of resilient material, it will be securely held upon the square. The material of which the invention is formed is of a nonmagnetic character, (such as brass) so that the needle of the compass will not be affected thereby.
The invention is susceptible of various changes in its form, proportions and minor details of construction and the right is herein reserved to make such changes as properly fall within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described the invention what is claimed is:-
1. The combination with a square, of a compass, a holder for the compass and means including L-shaped' gripping members having spaced resilient guide flanges for frictional engagement with the square.
2. The combination with a square, of a compass, a holder for the compass, said holder comprising substantially circular spaced flanges, whereby the center of the circular flange is definitely positioned on a line bisecting the angle formed by the members of the square and means for removably securing the holder to the square.
3. The combination with a square, of a compass, a holder for the compass, said holder comprising substantially circular spaced flanges and an Ill-shaped channeled gripping member for removably receiving the square.
In testimony whereof I aliix my signature.
' JSEPH l). BOZ.
