UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES F. BUTTERWORTH, OF TROY, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN NIUFF-LINIGS.
p Speciication forming part of Letters Patent No. 139,942, dated June 17, 1873 application filed April 12, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES F. BUTTER- WORTH, of Troy, in the county of Rensselaer and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Muff-Linings, of which the `following is a speciication This invention relates to the construction of ladies muffs, and applies especially to the lining thereof, whereby the muli' is made more useful and more durable than it has heretofore been 5 and it consists in the construction of the lining hereinafter more fully described.
In the accompanyingdrawing, Figure l is a side view of the lining, partly in section, showing the ends and, in dotted lines, the form of the entire muff. Fig. 2 is a cross-section of Fig. 1 on the line a:
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The lining of this muff is composed partly of fur and partly of elastic leather. The outer pieces, marked A A, are fur. These pieces are blocked or crimped to the form seen in the drawing, so that the lining part B and the end part C are at about right angles with each other, as seen in the drawing. The part B extends into the muff so as to inclose the wrists after the hands are admitted, which the natural elasticity of the fur permits. After passing through the fur the hands of the wearer will, of course, lap past each other and require more room as they enter the middle portion of the lining D. This part D I make of soft elastic leather or kid, which readily expands, is durable, and gives the required room. No elastic bands are used or required. The outer covering of the mutt' is attached to the part C by sewing, and the crimped textile fabric E at the ends ofthe muff may be dispensed with if desired, as when on a rich fur muff it is questionable whether they would be considered ornamental, and by my mode of' construction they are otherwise unnecessary.
The ordinary muff has elastic bands sewed to the silk lining at the ends of the mulwhich very soon wear out, as does the silk itself 5 and where Iput in durable elastic leather, as seen at D, the ordinary muff has silk, which also soon wears out and allows the down with which all good muffs are filled to work out.
With my lining the interior portion of the mnff is quite as durable as the fur itself.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. Amuff-linin g composed of the blocked end pieces A and the elastic kid middle piece D, constructed and arranged as and for the purposes described.
2. A mutt-lining composed entirely of part' fur and part elastic leather or kid, as shown and described.
