Speeificationof Letters Patent. Patgnied N 29 1 1921 Application filed January 20, 1921. Serial no. 438,575.
T 0 all whom it may concern: 5
Be it known that I, ARTHUR R. SELDEN, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York have invented certain new and useful Improvements in'Loose-Leef Binders, of which the following is a specification. i
The present invention relates "to loose leaf binders and an object thereofis to provide a binder employing two binder members, each of which has a cover hinged thereto and impaling projections, all combined with Inez-ins for locking the members together. A further object of the invention is to provide a binder having alocking means of novel construction whicl'r will hold two binder members infirm connection. A still further object of the invention is to provide :1 leaf tightening means in connection with an impaling means "which will prevent the movement of the leaves on the impaling means during the use of the binder. i further object oi? the invention is to provide in connection with a locking means for holding two binder members together, a leaf tightening means controlled simultaneously with said locking means. a To these and other ends the invention consists oi certain parts and combination of ports, all of which will be hereii'iafter do scribed, the novel features being pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings: 1 Figure 1 shows one of the binder'meinhers in front elevation and a fragment of onset the covers; l 1 Fig. 2 is a section on the line 1; Fig. 8 is a front elevation of the other binder member and shows also a fragment of the cover carried thereby; f

referring more particularly to the draw ings, lindicates one of the binder members and 2 the other. Associated with these binder members is en inipaling means consisting, in this instance, of pins '3 arranged on the binder member lend P111811- arranged onthe binder member 2; Each lJlIlClQPlilGllb her also has )re'terablya cover 5 hinged thereto at 6. oclrets or openings .7 may be provided in the binder membersland E2 in which the ends of the impaling pins 3 and at may extend asshown in Fig. 11. -Each binder member may also have a book casing 8 secured thereto and cooperating with the casing of the other member in order to provide a chamber in rear of the impa'ling nicans. Theopposed faces of the binder members 1 and-2 form rests or engagingsurfaces for the leaves 9, each of which is, in this instance, provided with openings 10 for the impeling pins 3 and openings 11 for the impaling'pins d. t apparent that the leaves will b'e held between the two binder members when the letter are associated together and when the binder members are sepnratm the leaves may beheld on either binder member through theimpalin pins on such member,- thus permitting the leaves to be transferred one at a time from one binder member toithe other and at the same time permitting the leaves on the two members to be brought together, due to the fact that the openings in i'heleaves on any one member 'tvillbe properly alir for lt-JCfilV- ing the iin 'ialing pins on the other, member.
His desirable to provide some meansifor securely holding the binder members together. binder member l is providedwith an elon gated projection 12 preferably formed in one piece with the bindermember 1 and pro j ected laterally withre'ference toassid binder member. This projection is adapted for co operation with a clamp. carried by the binder member 2. The clamp in the present embodiment comprises two clamping members 13 and 1d. The clampingmember 18 is,
' in thisinstance formed bv a'olete bent lat erslly tronvthe stripotshect metal pro viding the binder membeixEZV Thisplate has spaced openings 15 ther in formed by cutting the metal zindto provide tongues 16' which are bent rearwardlyirom suchplste. The clamping member lt'is in the form o a lVithQ- this purpose in viewythe I I U shaped strip having its ends 17. extended through the openings 15 into parallel relation with the tongues 16., The projection 12 Movement of the operating rod 18 in one direction moves'the clamping member 14'towardthe clamping member 1 3, while operation of the rod in the opposite direction moves the clamping member 14 away from the clamping member 13.3 Longitudinal movement of the rod in the tongues 16 may be prevented by pins orprojections 20 and these pins also serve as stops for limiting the rotary movementof the rod in two directions. This rod lies in the chamber formed bythe back casings. 8 and has one end 6X- tending to the exterior of the casing and provided with a slot 21 in which a coin orother instrument may be introduced forthe purpose of effecting the turning of "the Y rod 18.
' mounted on the binder member 2.. The '65 Loose leaf binders which secure the leaves through impaling means extending through openings in the leaves require that such openings be materially larger than the ims palingprojections in order to facilitate the movement of the leaves on such projections.
As a consequence, there is a tendency for the leaves to shift onthe impaling projections or pins slightly and this interferes with the turning of the leaves one at a time. According to this invention, a leaf-tightening means is provided which will shift the leaves intheir planes into binding engagement with the impaling pins ,or projections.
This leaf-tightening meansjin this in stance, comprises two tightening devices 00- operating preferably with the edges of the sheets adjacent the impahng pins or project tions 3 Land 4; The sheets,-in this'instance,
are formed with V-shaped notches22 situ-j atedbetween the openings 10 and lland the leaf tightening devices cooperate withthe walls of these notches and .force the leaves in their planes against the impaling pins 3 and 4,'while at the same time preventingmovement of theleavesin the direction of the line of the centers of the openings 10 and 11. Each leaf-tightening device comprises, in this instance, a member 23 rigidly secured to the binder member 1 and a member- 24 member 24 is formedof sheet metal bent between its ends to provide a wedge shaped portion 25 which may be readily introduced in the'notches 22 of the leaves. The portion 25 is coextensive with the distance between the leaf engaging faces of the binder members 1 and 2, and the upper part thereof' is notched at 26 to receive the member 23 while its lower end is provided with a I guide pin or projection 27 adapted to operate in a slot 28 in the binder member 2, the member 23 operating to prevent leaves passing-over the upper end of the portion 25 and the prcj ection 27 operating to prevent leaves passing under the lower end of said portion.
The ends of the metal piece forming the member 24 are bent into parallel relation at 29 to provide a projection, these ends hav ing registering openings 30 through which the operating rod 18 extends. The operating' rod hascam portions 31 thereon in the form of eccentric surfaces which coeperate with the walls of the openings 30 in the two tightening devices. When the rod is turned in order to clamp the projection 12 "between the clamping members 13 and 14, the memhere 24 of the tightening deviceswill be shifted outwardly into binding engagement withthe walls of the notches 22 of the leaves '9. In this movement the 'members 24' are.
guided by the walls of slots 32 formedin the supporting plate 13 of the binder member 2, such slots 32 being sufficiently large to permit play of the members 24 in order that the latter may be properly centered with respect to the notches 22. When the members 24 move into binding engagement with the walls of the notches 22, they shift the leaves in their planes into binding engagement with the impaling plnsor posts 3 and 4 and this blndmg engagement together with the binding engagement with the tapering faces 25 of the members 24 holds the leaves against any loose movement on the impaling pins or projections.
The shaft or operatingrod 18 is referably inclosed by a cas1ng33, in this in stance, in the form of a channeled piece having its edges secured by screws 34 to the plate-13 above and below the shaft. By this arrangement, when the two binder members are separated, the shaft and cooperating parts inclosed by the casing 33 are hidden fromview."
In using the binder, assumingthat the latter is closed or locked in the manner shown in Fig. 9, the shaft 18 is turned to release the projection 12 from the clamping plates 132'and 14 and to 'move the members 7 24 of the leaf tightening means inwardly, J 1
thus simultaneously unlocking the leaves and the binder members. The upperbinder member 1 may then be elevated with'refen.
ence to the lowerb inder member 2 and as many leaves as desired removed with said upper binder member, due to the fact that paling pins of each member are introduced 7 into the openings ofthe leaves in the other member and after the members are properly coupled together the shaft 18 is turned, thus clamping the projection 12' and at the same tlme locking the leavesthrough the movable leaf tightening members 24.
From the foregoing it will be seen that there has been provided a loose leaf binder having two binder members, each of which has a cover hinged thereto and each of which has impaling projections extending there-- from. A novel means is provided for locking these binder members togethenthis means preferably being in the form of a projection on one of the binder meinbers operating between a movable and a fixed clamping member on the other binder memher. The clamping members are controlled by a shaft or rod lying to one side of the leaves and operable from the exterior of the binder. There has also been provided means for tightening the, leaves in the binder to prevent any loose movement of the leaves on the impaling means. This tightening means shifts the leaves in their plane into binding engagement with the impaling means and also interlocks with the leaves to prevent sidewise movement of the latter. In this instance, this leaf tightening means is controlled by the operating member for locking the two binding members together.
