UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE P. WIGGINTON AND FRANK W. HODGES, OF KALAMAZOO, MICHIGAN; SAID HODGES ASSIGNOR T SAID WIGGINTON.
TEMPORARY BINDER OR LOOSE-SHEET HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 21, 1912.
Application filed September 2, 1909. Serial No. 515,799.
.Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Temporary Binders or Loose-Sheet Holders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in temporary binders or loose sheet holders.
The main objects of this invention are: First, to provide an improved temporary hinder or loose sheet holder which is adapted for the binding of sheets, without the necessity of perforating or otherwise especially preparing them for the binders. Sec 0nd, to provide an improved binder adjusted to securely hold or retain any number of sheets from one to its maximum capacity and one which is particularly adapted for the securing of large sheets. Third, to provide an improved binder which is quickly adjusted to permit the insertion or removal of the sheets. Fourth, to provide an improved binder in which the sheet or leaves are supported so that they lie flat when the binder is open, the sheets or leaves being secured at a central point. Fifth, to provide an improved binder which is simple and economical in structure and in its adjustment.
Further objects, and objects relating to structural details will definitely appear from the detailed description to follow.
We accomplish the objects of our invention, by the devices and means described in the following specification.
The structure described constitutes one eifective embodiment of our invention. Other embodiments would be readily devised by those skilled in the art.
The invention is clearly defined and pointed out in the claims.
A structure constituting an effective and preferred embodiment of the features of our invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, in which:
Figure 1 is a plan view of a binder embodying the features of our invention, the binder being open. Fig. 2 is a detail end elevation of our improved binder closed. Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail vertical section taken on line corresponding to line 33 of Figs. 1 and 1. Fig. 1 is an enlarged detail vertical section taken on a line corresponding to line 4- 1 of Fig. 3.
In the drawings, similar reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the several views, and the sectional views are taken looking in the direction of the little arrows at the ends of the section lines.
Referring to the drawing, our improved binder preferably consists of the covers 1 which are hinged to the back piece 2, as illustrated. The covers, however, are merely for protecting the contents of the binder as they form no part of the binding means proper. On the back piece we arrange a pair of upwardly-projecting posts 3, one at each end. These posts are preferably tubular and provided with vertical slots 4 at the inner ends thereof, the upper portions of the posts being unslotted. The sheet clamping members 5 are arranged through these slots and are preferably provided with pairs of upwardly-projecting finger-like post-engaging members 6 which embrace the sides of the posts and assist in supporting the clamp members thereon. The clamp members are provided with inwardly-projecting arm-like leaf-engaging portions 7 which are preferably projected downwardly at their inner ends so that the sheets or leaves are not engaged at their edges, the advantage of this being that the leaves are secured in an effective manner and they are not likely to be torn by the clamps.
The clamps are secured by means of the adjusting screws 8 which are preferably threaded into the posts as illustrated, to engage the clamps arranged through the slots therein. By turning the screws downward in the posts, the clamps are clamped down upon the leaves as clearly appears in Fig. 3, effectively securing them. Each clamp is -independently adjusted. By thus securing the sheets or leaves the binder is particularly adapted for large sheets or schedules which it is desired to arrange in a temporary binding for filing or other purpose, and at the same time, have them so that they are readily accessible. Our improved binder is however, adapted and desirable for use on small sheets.
We have illustrated and described our improved binder in detail in the form in which we have produced and embodied it in practice. We are, however, aware that it is capable of very considerable modification in structural details without departing from our invention, but as these details will be readily understood by those skilled in the art to which this invention relates, we have not attempted to illustrate or describe the same herein, but we desire to be understood as claiming the structure specifically as illustrated as well as broadly within the scope of appended claims.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. In a temporary binder or loose sheet holder, the combination with a back piece,
or" posts having vertical slots in their inner ends arranged on said back piece; clamp members arranged through said slots, said clamp members being provided with upwardly-projecting post-engaging members and laterally-projecting arm-like sheet-engaging members; and screws threaded into said posts to engage said clamp members.
2. In a temporary binder or loose sheet holder, the combination with a back piece, of posts having vertical slots in their inner ends arranged on said back piece; clamp members arranged through said slots, said clamp members being provided with laterally-projecting sheet-engaging members; and screws threaded into said posts to engage said clamp members.
3. In'a temporary binder or loose sheet holder, the combination with a back piece, ,35 of vertically slotted posts arranged on said back piece; sheet clamping members arranged through said slots; and screws threaded into said posts to engage said clamp members. 40
LA temporary binder or loose sheet holder comprising an internally threaded longitudinally slotted post; a clamping member arranged through said slot and having portions engaging the sides ofsaid post; and a screw threaded into the post to engage said clamping member.
In witness whereof, we have hereunto set our hands and seals in the presence of two witnesses.
