HEATING APPARATUS.
Application filed March 25, 1919.
ful In'iprovements in Heating Apparatus, of
which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to means for increasing the efiiciency of the well known hot water and steam heating devices commonly employed inthe heating of buildings. The general rinciple involved in the construction of t e apparatus is to utilize the outer surface of the heater, as a heating surface over which the hot products of combustion are passed before being led to the smoke stack or chimney. ,Over this heating, surface the hot products of combustion may be led in a zigzag course by means of longitu- .dinal bafiles which divide th'e space between the heater and an outercasing' intolongitu dinal flues, dampersbeing provided to per mit of direct draft whenever'desired.
The apparatus is constructed in detail as hereinafter more specifically described and as illustrated in the'accompanying drawin s in which i I Figure .1 1s a front elevation, partly in section, showing a rectangular heater provided with my improvements;
Fig. 2 a side elevation :of the. same, partly Fig. 3 aperspec tive View with th casing indicated in dotted lines.

7 1 is a heater of ordinary construction, of which 2 is a smoke collar. The heater is surrounded by a casing 3 of metal or refractory material, which is made completely airtight. Preferably the arrangement of the c'asin is such that the front of the boiler with its oor is exposed-,as shown particularly in Fig. 1. 'The casing, however, is
spaced from the rear end of the heater as shown more particularly in Figs. 2 and 3.
The space between the heater and the casing is divided into a plurality of longitudinal communicating flues by means of a plurality of baflies 4. Preferably two baflles are used at each side and two along the top of the heater. A depending fine 5 with which the smoke collar 2 communicates leads to the space at the end of the heater below Specification of Letters Patent.

the lower bafiles, and in communication with the. flue spaces beneath the lower baffles. Openings Gare provided in the baffles adjacent their ends. Certain of these openings are controllable by means of the sliding dampers 7, 8, 9 and 10. The flue spacesbeneath the lower battles are preferably divided by means of the partition 11, which serves to divide the products of combustion equally between the two sides of the casing.
The flue space at, the top of thejheater is also preferably divided by the longitudinal partition 12, which preferably stops short of the smoke outlet 13 which leads from the rear end of the top flue. 1 i
. Clean-out doors 14 are provided in the front of the casingthrough which thejvariousfiues may be cleaned. VVhena fireis being started or when it is necessary to establish an extra good draft, the dampers 8 are closed and the dampers 7, 9 and 10 opened. The products of combustion then pass down the flue 5, thence laterally and upwardly through the openings controlled by the dampers 7, 9 and 10 to the smoke outlet. When fulladvantage is to be taken of the external heating surface of the heater, the dampers? and 10areclosed. The products of combustion must then take a Zigzag course alone each side and top of the heater. If the draft is not sufliciently active to permit of this, the dampers 7 may be opened and the dampers 8 closed. The lowermost flues at each side are then cut out of the circuitand the'total travel of the products of combustion reduced.
I find that with. the construction shown I am enabled to secure greatly increased efliciency in the operation of a heater while maintaining under all circumstances an adequate draft.
I find that there are certain advantages in introducing heated air into the products of combustion near their lace of egress from the heater, and I there ore provide the pipe 15 which isled into the lower flue near the front and is carried to the back, where it is provided with a perforated nozzle, whereby the air is thus heated before being mixed in a fine spray with the products of combustion.
What I claim as my invention is p 1. The combination with a fluid heating furnace of the horizontal type, having a smoke exit at one end of an external casing Patented Sept. 27, 19 21.
surrounding the sides and top of the furnace and spaced therefrom, but leaving the front of the furnace casing with the ashpit and fuel doors exposed; longitudinal baffle plates dividing the space between the sides of the casing of the furnace and the external casing into a plurality of longitudinal communicat-y mg flues at each side; a dependmg flue, with which the smoke exit communicates, communicating with the lowermost flue at each side; a smoke outlet leading from the uppermost flue; and dampers whereby the prodnets of combustion may be allowed to pass either substantially directly to the smoke outlet or caused to pass in zigzag fashion through two or more, flues at each side of the furnace to the smoke outlet.
2. The combination with a fluidheating furnace of the horizontal typejhaving a smoke exit at one end of an external casing spaced therefrom at the sides, top and smoke outletend; longitudinal baflie plates dividing the space between the sides and top of the furnace and the external casing into a plurality of communicating flues; a depending flue with which the smoke collar communicates' extending down to the levelof the lower baflie plates; a smoke outlet leading from the uppermost flue; and dampers ing flue with which the smoke collar'communicates' extending down to the level of the lower baffle plates; a smoke outlet leading from the uppermost flue; and dampers whereby the products of combustion may be allowed to'pass either substantially directly to'the smoke outlet or caused to pass in zigzag fashion through two or more flues at each side of the furnace to the smokeoutlet;
a partition extending from the end of the furnace to the end of the external casing,
below the depending flue, dividing the lowermost flues from one another,;and a partition extending along the to of the furnace dividing the uppermost ue} 4. The combination with a fluid heating furnace of the horizontal type having a smoke exit at one end oflan external casing surrounding the sides and top of the furnace and spaced therefrom; longitudinal bafl'le plates dividing the space between the sides of the furnace and the external casing into a plurality'oflongitudinal communicating flues at each side; a flue, with which the smoke collar communicates, communicating with a distant flue at each side; a smoke outlet leadmg from another flue; and dampers whereby the products of combustion may be allowed to pass either substantially directly to the smoke outlet or caused to pass'in zigthe smoke outlet; 7 p u -5. The combinationwith a" fluid heating furnace of the horizontal vertical section type provided' wi'th internal flues for the products of combustion "and'spaces for the fluid to" be heated externally bounded by the casing of the furnace and surrounding the externalflues, fueland ashpi't doors at one end and asmoke exit'at the other end, of an Zag" fashion through two or more flues to E external casing spaced 'from'the sides and top of the furnace'ca singbut leaving the front of the furnace casing with the ashpit and fuel doors exposed; a, smoke outlet from said casing; longitudina-l'b'aifle's at each side of the furnace dividing the space between the casings into substantially horizontal flues; and'means for allowing the products of combustion from the furnace smoke exit to either circulate through said flues along the sides and top of the furnace before-pass- V ing to the smoke outlet of the casing or to pass substantially directly to said outlet.
