Description
V. R. CARLSON.
BAND BRAKE.
APPLICATION FILED NOV. 15, 1919.
Patented Aug. 2, 1921.
I NVENTOR ATTORNEY.
a construction common in the art, that is,-
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
VICTOR R. GARLSO'N, OF DULUTH, M IINNESOTA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO JOSEPH OLSON, 0F DULUTH, MINNESOTA.
BAND-BRAKE.
Application filed November 15, 1919.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VICTOR R. CARLsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Duluth, in the county of St. Louis and State of lWIinnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Band-Brakes, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to band brakes and has special reference to a novel form of such for use upon the transmission gearing in the Ford car. The principal object is to produce a band than can be readily removed for repair or replacement through the opening found in the housings of such cars.
Other objects and advantages of the peculiar construction will appear in the further description of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings forming part of this application and in which like reference characters indicate like parts:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of one of the improved bands,
Fig. 2 is an elevational view of the band taken at right angles to that shown in Fig. 1, Fig. 3 is an enlarged fragmentary view of the separable connection in the band the parts being in disengaged relation, and
Fig. 4 is a fragmental perspective view of the transmission housing with the cover plate removed to show the brake bands.
My improved band in general represents it comprises an encircling metal band 1 which carries upon the inner face thereof any form of suitable friction band 2 and which for the purpose herein described is usually in a single piece, the encircling band also being of but one piece, whereas in my improved construction both bands are made of two separable sections, one being very Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 2, 1921.
Serial No. 338,280.
much shorter than the other, they, being JOIIIGCl by a T and twin-hook connection formed in the adjacent terminals of the band 1, the T being illustrated at 3 and the hooks at 44.
The neck of the T, 3 is bent sharply outward as at 5 to bring it into correct alinement with the hooks as clearly illustrated in Fig. 2.
From the foregoing it is evident that I have devised a. brake band susceptible of quick and ready application or removal to the transmission drums through the opening found in, the ordinary Ford transmission housing.
Having thus described my invention what I clalm and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1 A brake band of the character described comprising two separable sections, a T and twin-hook joint connecting the separable ends of the band the neck of said T be ng bent outwardly sharply to bring the T into proper alinement with the hooks substantially as described.
2. A brake band of the character described comprising two separable sections, a T and twin-hook joint connecting the separable ends of the band, said joint comprising two spaced hooks upon one of the adjacent ends of the band and a T formed upon the other adjacent end of the band, the neck of said T being bent sharply outwardly and registering intermediate of the hooks when the joint is engaged, substantially as and for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
S. Gno. STEVENS.
