Description

N R SCOTT HOOK AND EYE'FASTEN ER; APPLICATION HLED JUNE 3, 1920 1,378,286, Patented May 17, 1921.
wires era res NELL RILEY score, or -lLBANY, onneonnoox-ann-nvn rasrnnnn.
T 0 all whom itmay concern Be it known that I, NELL RILEY Soon, a citizen of the United States, residing at Albany, in the county of Linn and State of Ore on, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hook-and-Eye Fasa teners, of which thefollowing is a specifica tion, reference being had to the accompanying drawings. 7 p
This invention relates to garment. fasteners or hooks and particularly to a hook used in connecting with an eye'to secure opposite parts of a garment to each other.
An object of the invention is to provide a hook of this character including means which permits the hook to be sewed at both end portions to a garment, so as to position the hook permanently at the place desired.
Another object is to providea hook'of this character which is formed from a small length of wire. I
A further object is to provide a hook of this character which provides means for fas toning the hook end portion to the garment without forming loops or like projections at the bend of the hook.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists in the improved construction and arrangement of parts to be herein after more particularly described, fully claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
' Figure 1 is a front elevation of a hook constructed in accordance with an'embodiment of the invention;
Fig. 2 is a side elevation;
Fig. 3 1s a section taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2; and
Fig. 4 is a rear elevation.
Referring to the drawings, 5 designates a length of wire bent at its intermediate portion to provide parallel arms 6 and 7, the bent intermediate portion serving as the bill of the hook. The arms 6 and 7 are bent in spaced relation to the intermediate portion upon themselves to provide arm portions 8 and 9 which extend in spaced parallel relation to the arms 6 and 7 The end portions of the arms 8 and 9 are extended beyond the bill of the hook, the arm 8 being extended outwardly away from the arm 9, while the end portion 10 of the arm 8 and end portion 11 of the arm 9 are extended in the same direction that is toward one side of the fastener to provide loops 12. These loops are sewed to the gar- Specification of Lettersfat ent. Patgntgd Application filed June 3, 1920. Serial IQ o. 386,311;

mentand serve to hold the upper portion of the hookin position. The end portion 10 is extended backltowardjthe arm 8 in par allel relation to the arm 8 and the-arm 9, and between said arms, the extremity of the endportion '8 being provided with a safety arch 13 which is disposed in parallel rela- I tion to the arms 6' and 7 and the hook formed by said arms.
By this means the loop or eye jthatisengaged with the hook is prevented from accidental disengagement by means of'the safety arch, it being neces- I sary for the eye or thread loop to ride, over the arch in order to become unfastened.v The end portion 11 of thearm 9 is extended v 'back toward the arm 9 in parallel relation thereto and .is then gradually extended from its parallel position, acrossthe arm 9 and has its end portion positionedupon the. arm 9,the ex tremity'14of the end portion 11 being disposedin' right angular relation to said end portion 11 and laterally of the fastener, closely adjacent the bend of the It will be noted that the extremity of the I L end portion 10 terminates in spaced relation to the bend of the hook sothat a space is left between thelower portion of the arms 8 and 9 over which the extremity 14 extends. By this means, thread may be engaged with the extremity 14 and thereby cause the extremity to force the end portions of the arms 8 and 9 into engagement with the garment. At the same time, the extremity 14 is concealed by the hook and all projecting loops or the like fastening means at the bend o the hook are eliminated.
It will be noted that there is no waste of material in the formation of this hook as every portion thereof performs an important function. 7 portion of the device around an adjacent It is not necessaryto loop any portion which would necessarily consume material. All of the portions of the hook with the exception of the arch 13 and the extremity 14 are disposed either in the same plane with the adjacent partor parts, or in I a plane parallel with the adjacent part or parts. In View of this, the eye that is engaged with the hook does not encounter any projections when being applied to the hook, and as the extremity 14 also serves to brace the lower portion or bend of the hook, the danger of the eye distorting the hook portion is eliminated.
Another important feature is that the end I of wire and including two inner and outer parallel bars, loops formed at and 11. o By this novel formation, the arch 1 Band the extremity 14 of the end portion 11 are positioned at a point where they will accomplish the best results without wasting material by iormingunnecessary loops and bends.
What is claimed is I 1. A garment fastener formed of one piece of wire and including two innerjand two outer parallel bars,'loops formed at the junction of the inner bars with the outer bars,'one of said outer bars having one of adjacent inner bar, the remaining portion of said-outer barbeing gradually extended across said inner barand having its eX- treinity extended transversely of the remaining bars.
3. A garment fastener formed of a single the bill of the hook, the end portions o1 the bars being bent upon themselves in the same directlon and in angular relatlon to the first mentioned bent POIiZlOIlOf said bars to provide sewing loops, each of the remaining I end portions of the bars being extended in parallel relation to said bars closely adjacent its respective bar, the extremity of one end portion of one of said bars being bent to provlde a safety arch, saidfarch being disposed v1n spaced relatlon to the first menits end portions disposed upon the adjacent ',tioned bent portion of said bars, the extreminner bar and extending transversely of the remain ng bars.
2. A garinei'it fastener formed of one the junction of the inner bars with the outer bars the end portion of one of said outer bars adjacent the loops of said bar being parallel to the corresponding portion of the 'ity of the other end portion of the other bar being bent in angular relation to said bar closely adjacent the first mentioned bent portion of said bars and laterally thereof to provide asewing arm.
In testimony whereof I hereunto afiix my signature.
