To all whom it may concern: 1
Be it known that I, SAMUEL V. \Viirnnnd TON, a citizen of the United States, residing at El Paso, in the county of El Paso and State of Texas, have invented new and useful Improvements in Snap-Fasteners, of whiohthe following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in fastening devices and resides in the provision of a simply constructed, inexpensive, and eificient fastening device which may be used for the usual purpose of snap buttons.

which eliminates the necessity of sewing the fasteners in place upon garments.
An object of the invention is to provide a fastening device of the character described which consists in male and female members, each of which is constructed of a' single piece of material and in such manner that it may beeasily and quickly hooked in place upon a garment orthe. like and will remain in such position without necessitating being sewed in place. i
A further object is to provide a fastener of the cliaracterdescribed which will be of particular use for ladies dresses and similar garments in that they may be quickly substituted for hooks and eyes or the ordinary snap; fasteners whic'lrhave been torn offor pulled out of such garments and which will serve to reliably hold the garment together.

Referring to the present embodiment of the invention there is provided a male fastening member 7 and a female fastening member 8. The male member 7 is formed of a single piece of preferably resilient wire bent substantially centrally of its ends to provide a straight portion 9 and then doubled back upon the straight portion 9 from each end thereof, as at 10 and 11, said portions 9, 10, and 11 forming the body of said member 7 The doubled back portions These two loops.

All of the parts of the member thus formed except the male member 16 he sub stantially flat and in the same plane. To secure the member 7 to a garment or the like. it is only necessary to insert the pointed prongs 14 and 18 through the material after the manner of inserting a safety pin and so 15 will rest upon the portions 10 and 11 of the body.
The female member 8 comprises a single piece of small resilient wire bent approximatel centrally of its ends to provide a straig it portion 20 and then bent back upon the portion 20 to provide the portions 21 and 22 corresponding to the portions 10 and 11, and which, with the portion 20, provide the body of the member. The portion 21 terminates at a point substantially centrally of the end of the point 20 then extends outwardly into substantially U-form, as at 23-. The portion 22 is likewise bent into U-form, as at 24, said U-portions crossing one another and being bent in such a manner as to provide an approximately circular opening 25 adapted to receive the male member 16. By reason of the Wire being resilient, the member 16 will force the sides of the U-portions 20 and 23 apart in being entered in the opening 25 and said parts will snap back into place and retain the member 16 after the manner of the ordinary snap fastener. The
other sides of the U-portions 23 and 2% lie at right anglesto the body to provide prongs 26 having pointed ends 27. The ends 27 are adapted to engage under the portions 21 and 22 and to lie between these portions and the straight portion 20. To fasten this member Sit is only necessary to insert the prongs 26 into the material of the garment after the manner of inserting a safety pin and to dispose. the pointed ends 27 under .the portions 21 and 22 and between said portions -and the portion 20.
It will thus be seen that I have provided male and female snap fastening elements, each made of a single piece of wire and that I have provided for a quick and reliable attachment of said fasteners by reason of the prongs formed by a peculiar bending of the free ends of the Wires of which said fastening elements are formed.
Withfasteners of this invention, the attachment thereof to garments may be effected much more easily and quickly than the ordinary snap fastener or hooks and eyes.
While I have illustrated and Particularly described the invention, it is to be understood that I may vary the manner of bending the wire,'.provided, however, that such I claim 1. A fastening element of the character described embodying in its construction a single piece of wire bent intermediate of its ends to provide oppositely extending guard portions, then bent to one side of said guard portions to provide one of the elements of a snap fastener at a point spaced from the guard portions, and then having its free end bent to extend on opposite sides of the said element and pointed, with the pointed ends arranged to rest upon the guard portions.
2. A fastening device embodying in its construction a single piece of wire bent intermediate of its ends to provide oppositely extending guard portions, then bent to provide one element of a snap fastener on one side and independent of said guard portions, and further bent to provide prongs at the free ends of the wire, which prongs extend on opposite sides of and in spaced relation to said element with their ends arranged to engage said guard portions.
3. A fastening device comprising male and female members each of which embody a single piece of resilient wire bent intermediate of its ends to provide guard portions and then bent at right angles to the guard portions to provide one of the elements of a snap fastener at a point spaced from said guard portions and then bent into substantially U-shaped form with its free ends extending on opposite sides of and adapted to engage said guard portions, said element being disposed substantially at a central point of the entire fastening device, said free ends being pointed.
