To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, IRA J. OWEN and BERNARD J. BOUWMEESTER, citizens of the United States, residing at Grand Rapids, Kent county, Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dust- Bag Structures for Vacuum-Cleaners, of which the following is a specification. This invention relates to improvements 1n dust bag structures for vacuum cleaners particularly adapted for the hand-propelled type.
The object of the invention is to provlde a simple and effective structure in which the fabric will be effectively guarded and protected by the metal parts, and further to provide a structure of the class described which shall be very strong, staunch and durable.
Objects relating to details and economies of construction and operation will definitely appear from the detailed description to fo1- low.
We accomplish the objects of our invention by the devices and means describedin the following specification. The invention is clearly defined in the claims.
A structure which is a preferred embodiment of our invention is fully illustrated in the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification, in which:

DUST-BAG STRUCTURE FOR VACUUI/LCLEANERS.

Considering the numbered parts of the drawing, 1 is the case of a vacuum cleaner of a usual form carried in the usual manner. 2 is the nozzle block carrying the dust box or bag 4 which is disposed in the vacuum chamber 3 of the said vacuum cleaner or sweeper. 5 is the gasket surrounding the same upon the nozzle block to close the front of the case. i Thedust bag 4 is carried by the plate 6 which has protecting flanges 7 around the mouth of the dust bag and is perforated at 8 to receive the screws 9 securing the ends to the block 2. The gasket 5 is disposed upon this plate. The dust bag is provided with metal exterior channel-shaped sides 10 which have outwardly turned ends 11 spot welded to the plates 6 at 12 and spot welded at 13 to the flanges 7 (see Fig. IV). Cross bars 14: are at the inner end of the dust bag and are provided with flange 15 bearing the engaging portion 16 for engaging the cover. The cross bars 1d are spot welded at 17 to the outer ends of the side pieces 10 (see Fig. TV).
The fabric bag 4 is open at both ends. The inner end is disposed within the mouth of the plate 6 and projects out beneath the same, extending within the flanges 7, 7. The sides of the bag are disposed within the channels of the side bars 10, and the outer end is folded over the outer end of the frame, as shown in Figs. V and VII. The flanges 15 are pressed down upon the fabric and clamp the same in position, as indicated in Fig. V. The retaining piece 20 with its flanged side 21 is disposed within the bag and fits snugly in position. The outwardly extending lug 22 is folded down upon the outer eno of the side 10 and clamps the bag securely in position in that relation. Projecting ends 23, 23 are turned outwardly into engagement with the fabric and extend into the recesses 28 28 that are formed in the plate 6 so that by this means the fabric of the bag is securely held in'place bythe grip of the metal folded upon it, making a very staunch construction which can be removed with the nozzle block to discharge the contents therefrom, and is fully metal bound and protected.
A cover 24: is provided, having side flanges 25 and end flanges 26 outturned to permit the same to be readily'forced over the end of the bag. A depression 27 in the side flange 25 is to receive the engaging projection 16 on the bar 14, already described.
A blade spring 28 is secured to the cover 24 by spot welds 29, 29 at each end and has a central projection 30 that contacts with the rear or inner wall of the vacuum chamber 3, thereby forcing and clamping the same in position.
We have described the structure of-our improved dust bag very much in detail and we desire to claim the details of the same because of their superiority and because of the fact that the dustbag is practically protected from injury and the filtering surface utilized to a sufficient extent for the purpose. It will be observed that stitching and glue and work of that kind are substantially eliminated from this structure, yet the same is exceedingly strong and efiective. While we desire to claim the structure specifically as shown, we also desire to claim the features broadly, as pointed out in the appended claims.
Having thus described our invention what we claim as new and desire to secure by Let; ters Patent is:
1. In a dust bag structure, the combination with the nozzle block, of a base plate secured thereto, having projecting flanges at the discharge mouth from the said nozzle block, outer side pieces of flexible metal in channel form suitably joined to the said plate and flanges, cross bars connecting the outer ends of said side pieces together and provided with folding flanges thereon, a dust bag disposed within said frame with its outer end embracing the outer end of said frame and retained by said flanges, and its inner end disposed within and beneath the flanged base plate, and retaining inner side bars conformed to the flanged outer sides with the ends folded over the fabric of the said dust bag, clamping the same in position, and with outwardly-turned end lugs engaging within the mouth of the said base plate, all coacting substantially as described for the purpose specified.
2. In a dust bag structure, the combination with the nozzle block, of a base plate secured thereto, having projecting flanges at the discharge mouth from the said nozzle block, outer side pieces of flexible metal in channel form suitably joined to the said plate and flanges, cross bars connecting the outer ends of said side pieces together and provided with foldingflanges thereon, a dust bag disposed within said. frame with its outer end embracing the outer endjof said frame and retained bysaid flanges, and its inner end disposed within and beneath the flanged base plate, and retaining inneriside bars, all coacting substantially as described for the purpose specified.
3. In a dust bag structure, the combina tion with the nozzle block, of a base plate secured thereto, having projecting flanges at the discharge mouth from the said nozzle block, outer side pieces of flexible metal in channel form suitably joined to the said plate and flanges, cross bars connecting the outer ends of said side pieces together and provided with folding flanges thereon, a dust bag disposed within said frame with its outer end embracing the outer end of said frame and retained by said flanges, and its inner end disposed within and beneath the flanged'base plate, all coacting substantially as described for the purpose specified.
4. In a dust bag structure, the conibination with the nozzle block, of a base plate secured thereto, having projecting flanges at the discharge mouth from the said nozzle block, outer side pieces of flexible metal in channel form suitably joined to the said plate andflanges, cross bars connecting the outer ends of said side pieces together, a dust bag disposed within said frame with its outer end embracing the outer end of said frame and its inner end disposed within and beneath the flanged base plate, and retaining inner side bars conformed to the flanged outer sides with the ends folded over the fabric of the said dust bag, clamping the same in position, and with outwardly turned end lugs engaging within the mouth ofethe said base plate, all coacting substantially as described for the'purpose specified.
