This invention relates to suction cleaners, and more particularly to cleaners of the type comprising a cylindrical tank or casing containing a motor-driven suction fan and a dust-collecting lter bag.
An object of the present invention is to provide a cleaner of the aforementioned type having a removable dust-collecting lter bag adapted to be readily clamped within the dust-receiving chamber of fthe cleaner casing.
Another object is to provide a tank type cleaner having a removable dust-collecting lter and an auxiliary disposable lter which may fit into the rst-named filter.
Another object is to provide a flexible sealing means for the open intake end of the filters, so designed that it seals the filters when they are in their operating position and prevents dustladen air from contacting a marginal portion adjacent the open end of the disposable filter bag.
The sealing means is constructed so that the disposable lter bag may be easily inserted and removed from the first-named filter bag of a tank type cleaner.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will appear in :the following more detailed .description thereof taken in connection with the accompanying drawings in which:
Fig. 1 is a side elevational view, partly in section, of a suction cleaner embodying the invention;
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary side elevational view similar to Fig. 1, showing certain parts separated;
Fig. 3 is a perspective View of the sealing gasket having a portion removed to show more clearly its construction; and
Fig. 4 is an enlarged fragmentary view, in section, showing certain details of the invention.
Referring to the drawings in detail, a suction cleaner equipped with a filter bag and a sealing gasket fconstr-ucted in accordance with the invention is shown as comprising a cylindrical casing I Il closed at one end by a separable front head II having a suitable intake opening I2, and at the other end by a rear head I3 having a suitable exhaust (not shown).
The casing IIJ contains the usual motor-driven fan assembly I4 and is adapted to be disposed in a horizontal position and :to rest on a pair of runner members I5. The fan assembly I4 draws dust-laden air through the intake opening I2 provided in the head I I and into a filtering chamber I6, formed in the casing III, adjacent the head I I.
As shown more clearly in Fig. 4, the end of the casing I to which the front head II is secured is provided with an inwardly bent annular flange I'I with which an .annular clamping face I8 of the head Il is adapted to be aligned when the head is secured in its normal operating position.
The cleaner includes 4a conventional porous cloth filter bag 24 having a ring 2I secured thereto at the mouth or open end by means of wires 25. The ring ZI has a flange extending radially outwardly therefrom. A sealing gasket I9, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4, is provided with a groove 22 adapted to receive therein the flange 2l! of ring 2l, and with an integrally formed depending flexible portion 23, which may be of bulged form as shown.
The bag 24 with its ring 2l :and the sealing gasket I9 may readily be removed from the cleaner, when the front head I I is detached from the casing as shown in Fig. 2.
A cylindrical filter bag 26 made of porous material such as paper is .designed to fit snugly within the bag 24, as shown in the drawings. The paper bag 26 is of the disposable type and may be removed from the cloth bag 24 and discarded. The bag 26 is made long enough to provide a portion 2'I at its open end extending beyond the bag 24 and its ring 2|. The extended portion of the bag is adapted to receive a member 2B, which is carried by the head II on the inner side thereof and which is dished shaped so 'that the extended bag portion 21 fits snugly over the cylindrical exterior surface of the member 28, as best shown in Fig. 4, The member 28 is provided with a flange 29 received within a recess 30 of the head II and is secured therein A by a compressed sealing gasket 3l.
Suitable clamping means may be employed to secure the head I I to the casing IIl and to exert pressure on the sealing gasket I9. Such clamping means as herein illustrated are Well known and in the form here shown, the casing I0 is provided with a hinge pivot 32 on the underside `and a spring-biased toggle clamp 33 mounted on the upper side. A compression spring 34 carried by the head II exerts pressure between the head II and a hinge member 35 slidably mounted on the head I I by a stud 36. As shown in Fig. 4, the toggle clamp 33 has a compression spring 31 exerting pressure on a clamping member 38 having its turned end 39 secured in a recess 40 provided in the head I I.
The function of the sealing gasket I9 is to prevent air leakage between the detachable head Il and the casing IU, to provide a seal between the ring 2| and the casing, and also to prevent dust from collecting on the extended portion 21 of the disposable lter bag 26. To this end, the dependent portion 23 of the gasket i9 is normally biased outwardly, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, to permit the easy insertion of the disposable paper bag 26 in the cloth bag 24. The portion 28 of the head ll is inserted in the free end portion 21 of the paper bag 26 and the clamping means described above is employed to fasten the head Il to the casing.
As the head ll is fastened to the casing, the peripheral portion of the gasket I9 is compressed between the clamping face I8 and the flange l1. The clamping face I8 deects the depending flexible portion 23 toward the flange 2li and radially inwardly against the cylindrical surface of the member 28, to retain the paper bag 26 against such cylindrical surface. The gasket I9 also forms a seal between the ring 2l and the member 28.
From the foregoing it will be seen that according to the invention, a suction cleaner of thetank type is provided so constructed as to prevent dust-laden air from entering the space 43 between the gasket I9 and the gasket 3l of the head Il. Thus, my improved sealing gasket effectively seals the extended portion 21 of the paper bag from dust-laden air. When the bag 26 has` become filled with dust, the head il is removed and the disposable bag 26 may be removed from the cloth bag 24 by the operator lifting the disposable bag from the cleaner by the extended, unsoiled portion 21.
The construction here shown is such that the two filter bags may be used simultaneously, or the cloth bag alone may be used.
While we have shown our invention in but one form, it will be obvious to those skilled in the art that it is not so limited, but is susceptible of various changes and modifications without departing from the spirit thereof.
What we claim is:
j 1. A suction cleaner comprising a casing having an open end, a gasket supported by said casing adjacent said open end, a head or closure member adapted to close said open end of said casing, said head having a projection on its inner side, which projection has a cylindrical exterior surface extending Within said gasket in closely spaced relation thereto, and means for clamping said head to said casing, said gasket being deformed by said head to bear radially inwardly against said cylindrical exterior surface of said projection.
2. A suction cleaner comprising a casing having an open end and an inturned flange adjacent said open end, a head or closure member adapted to close said open end of said casing, a cloth lter bagv having aV ring attached to its open end, said ring comprising a flange extending radially outwardly, a gasket embracing the outer edge of said ring flange and adapted to engage said casing flange, said gasket further comprising a bulged portion extending radially inwardly adjacent the outer face of said ring flange, said head having a projection on its inner side, which projection has a cylindrical exterior surface extending within said ring in closely spaced relation thereto, and means for clamping said head to said casing, said head having an annular portion which, when the head is clamped to the casing, bears upon said gasket and forces it radially inwardly against said cylindrical surface of said projection.
3. A suction cleaner comprising a casing having an open end and a gasket-supporting seat adjacent said open end, a head or closure member adapted to close said open end of said casing, a dust-collecting filter bag having an open end, said cad having a projection on its inner side adapted to enter the open end of said filter bag to hold the saine distended, and a gasket adapted to b-ear against said seat of the casing, said head having an annular portion which, when the head is clamped to said casing, bears upon said gasket and forces it inwardly against the-outer surface of said bag to clamp the same between said' gasket and said projection.
4. A suction cleaner as set forth in claim 3 wherein said head or closure memberv has a recess extending inwardlyv thereof from said gasket and around said projection to receive the open end portion of said filter bag.
