COVER-LIFTING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 3, 1921.
Application filed August n, 1920. Serial No. 404,059.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SYVER H. Nnss, a citizen of the United States, residing at Portland, in the county of Multnomah and State of Oregon, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Cover-Lifting Devices, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawin s.

The object of my invention is to provide a two member cover lift of compact form, by means of which a slip cover may be lifted so it can be removed, by a single pressure of the thumb or finger. These objects, as well as other advantages, I attain by the con struction, combination and arrangement of parts shown in the accompanying drawings which form a part hereof.
Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of part of a box or receptacle with my device upon the cover, on the line l-l of Fig. 2.
Fig. 2 is a full front elevation of the same.
Fig. 3 is a side elevation of part of a receptacle with slip cover partly removed and showing application of thumb to the device.

The receptacles upon which I intend to place my device are of the kind shown in the drawing and such as are commonly used for shoe-blacking, ointments, etc., usually of metal. The receptacle is of two parts, the container 4 and the slip cover 5. The cover is formed in the first instance with an integral tongue 6, preferably having inclined edges to provide a strong base. An integral circularbead 7 is formed on the container i a short distance from its top and this the cover engages when in place. The device comprises the tongue 6 as one member, and a lift member 8. The member 8 has a transverse slot 9 in its upper part and an integral, beveled projection 10 in its lower part, and a shoulder 11 on its upper edge formed by cutting a transverse slit in the material and pressing that below the cut outwardly, resulting in the projection as illustrated. T o assemble the device, the tongue 6 is bent upwardly into engagement with the side of the cover. The member 8 is then slipped upon the tongue, the upper part of which extends through the slot 9 until its free end engages the inner surface of the member 8. This member is then pressed downwardly until it is alongside the bead 7, and the free end of the tongue 6 is curved over, forming a hinge for the member 8, in which it is allowed to move slightly toward the receptacle and away from it.
It will now be seen that when the device is arranged upon the slip cover 5 as shown, and the cover is in place, a slight pressure of the thumb upon the member 8 causes the beveled surface of the projection 10 to engage the beat 7 of the container at. This causes the cover to rise at this place suiiiciently to grasp and remove it. Uften this operation will cause the cover to storing free of the container. The shape of the free end of the tongue 6 should be such that it will retain the member 8 in snugly hinged position, also with the projection 10 in position to engage the container bead as described.
1 contend that my device is simple as to parts and construction, and different from any other known device or similar character. Tt is economical to manufacture and easily adaptable to receptacles of the kind for which it is proposed. Its prompt efiiciency in operation has been demonstrated already in working models.
I claim- 1. A cover lifting device comprising a tongue rigidly secured at its base, and a member hinged near one end upon the free end of the tongue when upwardly bent, the said member having in its lower part an integral beveled projection.
L. A cover lifting device, comprising a slip cover, an integral tongue rigidly secured at its base to the lower edge of the cover and upwardly bent along the side of the cover, and a member hinged near one end upon the upwardly extending free end of the tongue, the said member having in its lower part an integral beveled projection, the projection being arranged to allow its beveled surface to be moved into engagement with an opposing object below the cover edge.
