INVEN TOR.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
BOX-OPENER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed November 12, 1920. Serial No. 423,584.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEO F. LANGE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Box- Openers, of which the following is a speci fication.'
This invention relates to a box opener, and more particularly to a device adapted to be mounted on a metallic can of the type generally employed for containing ointment, shoe paste and the like.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a device which may be easily operated to conveniently dispose the cover of the box from its position.
Other objects of the invention will appear upon consideration of the following detail description and accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a side elevation of the box constructed in accordance with my invention,
Fig. 2 is an elevation showing the cover in open position, and
Fig. 3 is a plan View of the box with the cover removed.
Referring to the drawing by numerals. the box 1 is provided with the usual annular head 2 and is adapted to receive a cover 3 which is also equipped with an annular flange 4 at its marginal edge. Normally when the cover 3 is mounted in the box, the flange 4 is in close contact with the annular bead 2. i
The opener member 5 is constructed of a length of suitable wire which is bent intermediate its ends into the form of a loop 6 from which the opposite ends are extended parallel to form a guide arm 7 which is slidably mounted in a guide member 8 suitably fixed to the bottom of the receptacle 1. This arm extends outwardly for a suitable length from which point it is curved upwardly where the ends of the wire are separated and curved in opposite directions to form a yoke member 8, the arms 9 and 10 of which extend around opposite sides of the can as shown to advantage in Fig, 3. The ends of the arms 9 and 10 are beveled to thin edges- 11 so that the ends of the arms may be conveniently inserted between the annular bead 2 on the receptacle and the annular flange 4 on the cover. Since the arm 7 is slidably mounted in the guide member 8 it will be obvious that the arms 9 and 10 may be withdrawn from and pushed into position between the head 2 and the flange 4. Thus when it is desired to move the cover it is merely necessary to exert a pressure on the portion 12 of the opener member so that the beveled ends of the arms 9 and 10 will be thrust into the space between the annular head 2 and the annular flange 4 and since the arms 9 and 10 are beveled the cover will be forced upwardly so that it may be readily removed.
Minor changes may be made in the details of construction without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the claims hereunto appended.
lVhat I claim is 1. In combination with a receptacle having a cover, the receptacle being provided with an annular bead and the cover having an annular flange adapted to engage the annular bead on the receptacle, of an opener member provided with an arm slidably connected to the bottom of the receptacle and equipped with a yoke member having oppositely disposed arms extending on opposite sides of the receptacle, and equipped with beveled ends to be inserted in the space between the said annular bead on the receptacle and the annular flange on the cover.
2. A box opener, comprising in combination with a receptacle having an annular bead, and a cover provided with an annular flange adapted for engagement with the said annular bead, an opener member com prising alength of wire shaped to provide a guide arm, means to slidably connect the guide arm to the bottom of the receptacle, the length of wire having its end portions curved in opposite directions to provide oppositely extending arms to engage opposite sides of the receptacle, the ends of the said arms being beveled to facilitate insertion in the space between the annular flange on the cover and the annular bead on the receptacle.
In testimony whereof I have affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses. LEO F. LANGE. Witnesses:
