HAIR CURLER. APPLICATION FILED ocT. 30. ms.

I gwumiloz (Vin/aci- ORA D. MCCLINTOCK, 0F PORTLAND, OREGON.
HAIB-GURLER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 5, 1921.
' Application filed October 30, 1919. Serial No. 834,534.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ORA D. MoCLINrooK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Portland, in the county of Multnomah and State of Oregon, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hair-Curlers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has for its object to provide a simple and efficient hair curler especially designed for use by children which is provided with an improved elastic tube upon which the hair is coiled or wrapped and due to the elastic quality of thetube prevents discomfort to the head of the user regardless of the position of the head.
Another object is the provision of a hair curler of this character equipped with a flexible non-elastic member extended through the elastic tube and provided with means for maintaining the hair in position thereon.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists in the novel features of construction, combination of elements and arrangement of parts which will be more fully described in the following specification and set forth with particularity in the claims appended hereto. k
Figure 1 represents a perspective view of the hair curler applied to use.
Fig. 2 represents a perspective view of the curler illustrating the manner of coiling the hair thereon.
Fig. 8 represents a perspe tive view of the curler inoperated position.
Fig. 4: represents a perspective view of the hair curler removed from the hair.
Referring to the drawing in detail, wherein similar reference numerals designate corresponding parts throughout the several views the numeral 5 indicates an elongated hollow tube preferably of cylindrical form and constructed of rubber or other material having equivalent elastic qualities.
A flexible member 6 is passed longitudinally through the elastic tube 5 and is preferably formed of two strands of metallic cloth covered wire twisted together in order to prevent separation of the respective strands. The terminal portions of the flexible members 6 are passed through the bore of the tube 5 and the medial portion thereof which protrudes through one terminal of the tube 5 is formed with a relatively large medial loop 7 while the strands at the opposite terminal of the flexible member are spread apart to provide a pair of terminal loops 8 receiving a flexible tape 9, preferably formed of fabric.
In use, the strand of hairlO to be coiled is passed through the medial loop 7 until the same is disposed in the desired position r with relationto the head of the wearer.
. The hair is subsequently coiled or wrapped about the tube 5 and due to the elastic quality of the material from which said tubeis constructed inconvenience and discomfort to the user are obviated. Subsequent to coiling the hair about the entire length. of the tube 5, the terminals of the flexible member 6 are bent back over the tube as suggested in Fig. 3 and by wrapping or coiling the terminals of the tape 9 in opposite directions about the coiled portion of the hair 10. the latter is securely held in position upon the tube, the terminals of the tape being finally tied together as indicated at 11 to prevent accidental displacement thereof.
What I claim is:
1. A hair curler comprising a bendable element having terminal loops and bent intermediate the ends .to form side portions in parallel relation with a loop at the bend, and a casing of flexible material having a smooth outer face and inclosing the parallel side portions, said terminal loops adapted to receive a binding tape.
2. A hair curler comprising a flexible casing member having a smooth outer face, and a bendable element extending through the casing with a hair receiving loop at one end of the casing, and tape receiving loops at the other end of the casing.
3. A hair curler comprising a flexible casing member having a smooth outer face, and a bendable element extending through the casing with a hair receiving loop at one end of the casing, and extending beyond the casing at the other .end, said extended portions adapted to be bent over the casing and provided with tape receiving loops.
In testimony whereof, I affix my. signature hereto. 7
.ORA D. MQCLINTOCK.
