Description
I. V. ADAIR.
Post-Drivers.
Patentedwlarbmn lo'l o mmm:
camco AM, PHomL/rf/asRAPH/c m2 Mdosonws macssa) PATENT OFFICE.
ISAAC V. ADAIR, OF ROMULUS, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN POST-DRIVERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 137,120, dated March Q5, 1873i VTo all whom it may concern: l
Be it known that I, IsAAo V. ADAIR, of Romulus, in the county of Seneca and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Post-Driver, of which the following is a specification: l
Figure l is a sectional side elevation of my improved post-driver. Fig. 2 is a top view of the same; Fig. 3, an end view, partly in section, of the same. Fig. 4 is a detail face view ofthe standards o and catch p.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The invention consists in improving postdri vers, as hereinafter fully described and subsequently pointed out in the claims.
A in the drawing represents the wagonframe. Upfn it is placed a narrow frame, B resting on false holsters a a, as shown in Fig. 3. The end pieces b b of the frame B are curved on the lower edge, to form a cradle on which the frame B can vibrate laterally. -Lon, gitudinal displacement of B is prevented by a tenon, d, ou one of the pieces b entering a mortise in the false bolster a beneath, all as clearly shown in Fig. 3. By a lever, e, and link f the rocking frame is connected with the reach g of the wagon so that it can, by such connection, be locked at any suitable angle. This is for the purpose of bringing the hammer straight down upon the post, even if the wagon stands inclined. (l is a shaft or windlass, hung in a frame, D, which is, at lf, pivoted to the frame B. The other end of D is connected by a spring, i, with the frame B, whereby it and the shaft G are made yielding up and down. A cam, j, is affixed to the Windlass.
The object of hinging the windlass-frame at one end' and connecting it with the spring at the other is to cause this frame to act like a safety-valve. As the hammers cannot at first make the entire sweep, and as the cam must turn all the way round, something would give way except for this spring and hinge applied to the frame in this way.
E is a lever, pivoted at Ztoone end of the u frame B', and extending above said frame toward the other end, where it has a weight or hammer, m, attached to it.
By turning the windlass and the cam j,
which is under the lever E, by horse-power or otherwise, the lever E will be alternately raised and dropped to have the desired effect upon the post under the hammer. rlhe upper part of the post fits between arms n n that project from the end of B. The lever E is, in its motions, guided between two standards, o o, that project from the frame B. To these two standards is applied a pivoted catch, p, by which the lever E can be held elevated while the post is bein g handled under the hammer. The shaft of the windlass can be made to slide in the bearings and locked by a key, r, and unlocked whenthe cam is to be drawn out from under the lever E, and the operatingrope rewound upon thewindlass.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. In a post-driver, the narrow frame B resting on false bolsters a c and having curved tenoned end pieces d d, constructed, and applicable to the running-gear of a wagon, as and for the purpose described.
2. The windlass-frame Dof a post-driver, connected at one end by a hinge-joint, h, and at the other by a spring, 1", as and for the purpose' set forth.
3. The combination, in a post-driver, of a rocker-frame, B, frame D pivoted thereto, cam and shaft C j, and hammenshaft E, construct ed and arranged substantially as and for the purpose described.
