IMPROVEMENT IN CARPET-STRETCHERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 136,339, dated February 25, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NATHANIEL K. SHEL- TON, of Wabash, in the county of Wabash and State of Indiana, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Oarpet-Stretchers; and I do hereby declare that the following is afull, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawing is a representation of longitudinal central section. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same.
This invention has relation to wooden carpet-stretchers; and it consists in the construction and novel arrangement of apair of wooden beam-levers perforated to receive a fulcrumpin, and having at their outer ends toothed wooden heads provided with diagonal braces, which are mortised on each side of said heads and beam-levers, thereby producing a strong and firm wooden carpet-stretcher, as hereinafter more fully described.
Referring to the accompanying drawing, A A designate a wooden pair of beam-levers,
' crossing each other and connected together by means of a fulcrum-pin, b. The lever A is slotted or bifurcated longitudinally to receive the lever A. Both levers are correspondingly perforated, as shown at a, so that the fulcrumpin may be adjusted to adapt the stretcher to rooms of different widths. Each lever is provided with a head, 13, which isarmed with pins or teeth 0, to be inserted in the carpet near the edge thereof. These heads B are each provided with mortised diagonal braces h near the outer ends thereof, extending up a short distance, and mortised to the beam-levers, as shown. The bifurcated lever A is represented with a neck, z, and bevel shoulders 2 to which the braces h are mortised, whereby a very strong beam-lever is made, and well adapted to this purpose. After said teeth are inserted inthe carpet, the levers are pressed down to a horizontal position to stretch the carpet, and are held in such position by means of a band, 6, which passes around the lever A, and is arranged to slide over the end of the lever A.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The wooden carpet-stretcher described, consistin g of the bifurcated beam-lever A and the beam A, both perforated for the fulcrum-pin b, and having at their ends the toothed heads B, provided with diagonal braces h, mortised into said heads and said beams on each side thereof, constructed and arranged as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
NATHANIEL K. SHELTON.
