Description
A. VANDERDONCK.
GRIPPING DEVICE. APPLICATION FILED APR-15,1920.

INVENTOR Alphonse Vanacraanck.
%joW AT ORNEY UNITED STATES PATENT QFFICE.
ALPHONSE VANDERDDNCK, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
GRIPPING DEVICE.
Application filed April 15,
To all QUIZ-077% it may concern.
Be it known that I, ALrHoNsn Venom:- noNoK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gripping Devices, of which the following a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
My invention relates to improvements in clutching and gripping devices, and more particularly is adapted for use in gripping cables, ropes, or similar articles such as clothes lines.
In the accompanying drawings 1 have illustrated in Figure 1 in side elevation, partly broken away, and partly in section, one application of my invention. Fig. 2 is a view of the same at right angles showing the device in full outline without the rope in position. Pig. 3 is a side elevation, partly broken away, illustrating a modification, and Fig. at is a view looking from right to left at Fig. 3.
Referring now more particularly to Figs. 1 and 2, it will be observed that the handle or body portion 5 terminates in oppositely facing teeth such as (3-43 and is provided with a pivoted cap 7 provided with recesses S-8' the same being opened at one side as indicated at 9. in order to grip the rope, the same may be passed through the opening 9 or introduced through the end of the same, after which by taking hold of the handle Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 21, 1920.
1920. Serial No. 374,028.
5 the same is firmly gripped between the teeth and the recesses, if pulled rightwardly looking at vFig. 1, between the teeth 6 and the recess 8; if leftwardly, looking at the same figure, between the teeth 6 and the recess 8. These teeth of course may be straight instead of formed in opposing directions.
in the modifications shown in Figs. 3 and it an additional binding or gripping device comprising the spur 10 at the end of the weighted member 11 may be pivoted at 12 as shown, in which case the rope will be normally gripped until the weighted member is shifted; thus releasing the same due to the eccentric mounting of the spur 10.
Of course it will be understood that various modifications may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention as claimed.
I claim:
in a hand gripping device of the class de scribed, a handle provided at one end with a gripping portion at the opposite end having teeth at opposite sides thereof, a pivoted recessed member adjacent thereto through which a rope is adapted to be passed whereby when said handle is pulled in either direction, said rope is gripped between the teeth of said gripping portion and the recessed member at the side in the direction in which said handle is pulled.
In testimony whereof I hereunto attix my signature.
ALPHONSE VANDER-DONCK.
