Description

UNITED STATES PATENT .OEEIcEr ZAOHARIAH P. LANDRUM, OF rCOLUMBUS, MISSISSIPPI.
IMPROVEMENT IN HORSE-POWERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 136,075, dated February 15, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ZAOHARIAH yl?. vLAN- DRUM, of Columbus, in the county of Lowndes and State of Mississippi, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Horse Power; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference'being had to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specitication.
The invention relates to horse-powers adapt- ,y
ed `to use upon cotton-grins; and consists in the mode of combining the essential parts, substantially as hereinafter described and subsequently claimed. n
1n the drawing, Figure l is a side elevation. Fig.`2 is a topview. Y
A represents an upright frame, in which is journaled a vertical shaft, B. On this shaft is placed a drive-wheel, O, on whose periphery cornes the strain of the gin or other machinery which is worked. D D are the sweeps, consistin g of rigid rods of metal or wood rigidly fastened on the bars E E. From the drivewheel C depend the hangers'F F, consisting of stout iron bars, in which are fastened the end of levers. These levers are intended to be perfectly rigid, and not to touch the shaft B. G H are rightangled bars connected with shaft B, and braced by a radial bar, I. At the end of bar H is attached the bar E, which rests upon, but is not attached to, a diametrical bar, K. These bars together form a supporting-frame, L. y
This construction affords a very convenient and smoothly-Working horse-power, which has been practically tested and received by the public with great favor.
Having thus described my' invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isi One or more levers, D, Wheel G having hanger F and fnlcrurn-fralne E G G I, combined' with shaft B, as and for the purpose described.
Z. P. LANDRUM. Witnesses:-
