IMPROVEMENT IN HAT AND COAT GUARDS.
' Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 136,005, dated February 18, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SUMNER N. ROBBINS,
have invented a new and Improved Combined Hat and Coat Guard, of which the following is a specification:
Figure 1 is a side view of my invention, showing the application to a silk hat. Fig. 2 is a front View, and Fig. 3 is a bottom view, of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate correspondin g parts.
The object of my invention is to supply to the public a device by the use of which the annoying change or carrying off of silk and other hats, overcoats, satchels, &c., may be effectually prevented. My invention consists of two U-shaped metal hooks, which are connected by a small lock applied to one of them, and are adjusted to the brim and inner lining of the hat. A short guard-chain may further connect the two hooks, to be placed around any fixed body, or be also connected with an overcoat, satchel, umbrella, or other object.
In the drawing, A represents the hat, to which is applied at the brim the hook B, made of suitable metal. Hook B is bent in the shape of a U, wide enough to admit the brimof different kinds of hats. To one side of hook B is applied a small lock, D, constructed in such a manner that a similar Usha-ped hook, O, can be introduced therein. The key a opens and separates hook 0 whenever it is desirable to take the hat off for use. Hook 0 is also made of suitable metal, and of narrower width than hook B, to be slipped over the inside lining of the hat. That side corresponding with the lock side of hook B is provided with a T- shaped extension, d, into which the aperture 12 for the admission of the spring-bolt c of lock D is applied. Hook 0 is placed into lock D under an angle corresponding to that of the body of the hat with the brim, and lock D and extension 61 are constructed in such a manner that when the hooks are connected that angle is produced.
The spring-bolt e of lock D snaps readily into aperture b of hook 0 when the same is pressed on the bolt, establishing thereby a quick connection of the hooks.
A short guard-chain, E, may be applied at fand g to lock D and hook O, to be used for the purpose of connecting the hat with any fixed object, as a hatstand, hook, 860., and also together with any article of gentlemens apparel, so that in traveling or in hotels hats, coats, satchels, and other articles usually carried in the hand may be securely and quickly fastened, and thereby protected against exchange or theft.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire tosecure by Letters Patent- The U shaped hooks B G, the latter having a T-shaped apertured extension, d, the Spring Witnesses PAUL GOEPEL, T. B. MOSHER.
