CLOAK.

-SPECIFICATION forming' part of Letters Patent No. 272,440, dated February 20,'1883.

.To all whom it may concern Beit known that I, DAVIS W. HOWARD, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and .Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Uloaks, 'of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference beinghad tO the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

My invention relates to improvements in the construction Ot' circular cloaks; and it conmay be conveniently carried When not in use, and the Same means utilized, when thecloak is 1n use, as a hood, all as willbe herein-- The ordinary pouch in which the cloak is now packed and carried is objectionable, as it is easily lost and inconvenient to carry about.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a partial elevation of a circular cloak embodying my invention when the cloak is in use.v Fig. 2 is an elevation of my invention, show-V ing, when the cloak is not in use, the means used to carry the same.

D D are the strings, which are inserted around lthe edge of the hood at any point, as at D in Fig. l, there' being a holecorresponding tODOn theedgeopposite. When the cloak is in use, to conceal the handles Or strings the neck of the. hood is stretched Wide Open and thehandles or strings are drawn in out of sight. When the cloak is not in use and it is desired to carry the same, it is rolled or packed in a small compass and placed in the hood reversed, and the strings are drawnout and serve as handles. Though the object of my invention could be carried Out by not reversing the hood, I prefer to make the outside appearance of my. bag or satchel as attractive as possible. There is found to bein the bag room for the small articles ordinarily carried by ladies in addition tothe cloak itself'.

In Fig. l the strings appear through the hole marked D, and illustrate how the strings Or handles appear when the cloak is in use upon a person. My improvement is attached to the body of the cloak in' theordinary manner, and I use the elastic cord commonly usedl to gather the-neck of the hood together and give it a shapely appearance.

B, the interior of the hood, which becomes the Outside of the bag in Fig. 2, can be made of the same material as the cloak or outside ofthe hood A; Ybut I preferto make it of cloth or of some light suitable material in leather, so that, when reversed, it will have every appearance of a Satchel or ladies shopping-bag.

Ido not conne myself to any particular kind of handles or manner of attaching them; but I prefer the simple way described, and

shown in the accompanying drawings.

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-

l. Acircularcloakoroutergarmentprovided with a hood, A B, made of any suitable material, having the handles D Dl attached, substantially as and for thepurposes described.

2. 'lhe combinationot' ai circular cloak or other outer garment with a hood attached thereto, fand provided with suitable means whereby the cloak may be rolledinto the hood, which is adapted toxbe used as a Satchel Or traveling-bag for carrying the same, substantially as and for the purpose described.
