Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFF CE.
THOMAS L. ODELL AND JOSEPH O. HUDSON, OF IOWA FALLS, IOWA.
IMPROVEMENT IN BED-BOTTOMS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 135,724, dated February 11, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, THos. L. ODELL and J 0s. 0. HUDSON, of Iowa Falls, county of Hardin and State of Iowa, have invented certain 'new and useful Improvements in Bed- Bottoms, of which the following is a specification:
The nature of our invention relates to the construction of a bed-bottom; and consists in making each slat of two thin boards, secured together at their ends, and spread or bowed outward in the middle by means of a spiral spring. Each slat is independent of the others, and is held in place by means of a pin projecting up from the spring-beams, and which passes through the ends of the slats.
The accompanying drawing represents a side elevation of our invention. Figure 2 shows the slats without the spiral springs.
a represents two thin boards, of suitable length, width, and thickness, and which are secured together at their ends by means of rivets or bolts. The inside ends of each of those slats are beveled oft outside of the rivets, so that when pressed apart the strain upon the ends will not tear the rivets loose. These slats, at or near the middle, are spread or bowed outward from each other, and a spi-V ral spring, I), inserted between them, as shown in Fig. 1, thereby making each slat springy and elastic. Extending across from the side pieces are the spring-beams c, beveled upon their tops, and having a number of projecting pins, d, which pass up through the ends of the slats and hold them in place.
A bed-bottom made in this manner is not only very cheap and light, but is delightfully soft and elastic to sleep upon.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Let- V
