Be it known that I, FRANK HUMPHRE- VILLE, a citizen of the United States, and

' a wheel toy which will be inexpensive to manufacture, easy to operate, and highly amusing to children.

Referring to the accompanying drawing by numerals, 10 indicates the seat of the rocker-carriage which is supported by a suitable frame work consisting of a pair of horizontal members 11, a pair of rockers 12 and legs 13 and 14 connecting the members 11 and the rockers 12. Rotatably mounted in the seat 10 adjacent the leg 14 is a steering post 15 provided on its lower end with a forked member 16, said member supporting a wheel 17 of any suitable construction between itslegs by means of an axle 18. The steering post 15 is slidable axially in the seat 10 so that same may be adjusted vertically in various positions, and is provided with a plurality of annular grooves 19. A slide 20 is mounted on the seat 10 adjacent the post 15 and is provided with a forked end 21, said end being arranged to engage any desired annular groove 19 so as to fix the steering post in any desired vertical position. The other end of the slide 20 is provided with a laterally extending shoulder 22 which serves as a handle by which the slide 20 can be moved toward or away from the steering post. The slide 20 is also toy adprovided with a slot 23 through which passes a thumb screw 24, said thumb screw being threaded in the seat '10 and serving to fix the slide 20 in any desiredposition and especially to fix said slide so that its forked end 21 fixes the post 15 in some desired vertical position. At the top of the steering post 15 1s fixed any ornamental member 25 such as the horse head shown in the drawings. A rod 26 passes laterally through the head 25 and serves as a handle so that when a child is sitting on the seat 10, he may rotate the steering post 15 in the seat 10 by means of said rod thereby steering the carriage in any desired direction as he propels it along the ground. Passing laterally through the lower ends of the legs 14 is a rod 14 which extends out a certain distance on each side of said legs so that when the toy is used as a rocker, the child may place his feet on said rod. A plurality of pairs of horizontal holes 27 extend through the legs 13 so that a hinge pin 28' may be journaled in one pair of said holes. The hinge 28 pivotally supports a standard 29 which has journaled at its lower end an axle 30 on each end of which is rotatably mounted a wheel 31. The rod 28 may be placed in any pair of the holes 27 so that the wheels may be adjusted in various vertical positions relative to the seat 10. A laterally extending member 32 is fixed between the rear end of the rockers 12 and serves as a stop to limit the rotation of the standard 29. A pair of crank shaped fasteners 33 are rotatably mounted on the member 32 so that when said fastening members are turned in one position they engage the standard 29 thereby fixing the same securely to the member 32.

When the toy is to be used as a carriage the front wheel 17 is adjusted by means of the slide 20 and the rear wheels 31 are adjusted by means of the rod 28 so that the seat 10 is substantially in a horizontal po sition. The child then sits on the seat 10 and propels the carriage with his feet and steers the same by means of the handle 26. \Vhen the toy is to be used as a rocker, the steering post'15 is adjusted axially by means of the slide 20 in the position shown in Fig. 2. The members 33 are also rotated to a position which will allow the standard 29 to be free from the member 32 and also free to rotate about the pin 28 as the child rocks the toy. The child then sits on the seat 10 places his feet on the rod 14 and by grasping the handle 26 a swinging motion of the body will rock the toy While the standard 29 rocks through small arcs about the pin 28 as the rear Wheels 31 travel along the ground with a reciprocating motion.

I would state in conclusion that While the illustrated example constitutes a practical v embodiment of my invention I do not limit 1 carriage myself strictly to the mechanical details herein illustrated, since manifestly'the same can be considerably varied Without departure from thespirit of the invention as defined in the appended claims.

' Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
