SIPEUIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 722,524, dated March 10, 1 903. Application filed October 24,1902. Serial No 128,535. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
a citizen of the United States of'America, and
a resident of Cincinnati, in the county of V r at its inturned fore end-9 to the lower end of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tricycles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain improvements in tricycles; andits object is to provide a vehicle of this character of an improved and simplified nature and of a strong, light, convenient, and comparatively inexpensive construction which shall be well adapted for childs use in imparting enjoyment and better health by the exercise of the muscles, limbs, and organs employed and brought into action in its operation.
The invention consists in certain novel features of the construction, combination, and arrangement of the several parts of the improved tricycle whereby certain important advantages and results are attained and the device is made somewhat simpler, cheaper, and otherwise better adapted and more convenient for use than various other forms of tricycle heretofore employed, all as will be hereinafter fully set forth.
The novel features of the invention will be carefully defined in the claim.-
In the accompanyingdrawings, which serve to illustrate my improvements, Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional elevation taken through the center of the vehicle. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the seat, reach, and foot-supports, omitting the remaining running-gear and the ornamental animals head; and Fig. 3 is a broken perspective view showing fragments of the seat and reach, so as to clearly indicate the adjustable means of connecting the two parts.
1 represents one of the two main supporting-wheels (the other being omitted in the drawings) of the vehicle, 2 the axle, hearing at its ends in the hubs of said wheels, and 3 an upright bracket (being one of a pair, the other one not being shown) connected by a bolt at its lower end or foot 4 with said axle and at its upper end suitably secured to the bottom cured intermediate its ends to the outer fore portion of the seat, a series of holes 7 being provided for the vertical adjustment thereof.
8 is a connecting crankrrod pivotally united hand-lever 6 and likewise united with the eccentric block 10 in the wheel 1.
11 represents the single front or steering wheel of the vehicle mounted to revolve in the fork 12, the latter having an upright pintle 13 at its upper end for supporting the front fork and wheel in the foreen'd of the reach 14 for horizontal turning movement in guiding the device. Foot rests or supports 15 are mounted in holes 16 in the several pendent arms of the fork 12, there being a series of said holes 16 in each fork-arm for the vertical adjustment of said-foot-rests 15, as best seen in Fig. 1.
The reach 14; is preferably constructed in U or drop-frame form intermediate its ends, so that the child may readily pass to and from the seat and to give somewhat of a buoyancy or elasticity to the device, and its rear end is provided with a longitudinal slot 17, through which passes a vertical bolt 18, the latter first passing through a countersunk hole in the seat 5, with its lower end engaged by a handled nut 19, under which is a washer 20 for securely and adjustably as well as detachably connecting the reach with the seat. The said rear end of the reach rests in a central longitudinal groove or guideway 21, made in the under side of the seat, and is adapted to be slid along said groove and held firmly locked in position therein, especially against torsional movement, at any desired point to suit the length of the childs legs.
An ornamental horses (or other animals) head 22 is supported on the upper end of the V pintle 13, projecting a short distance above the upper face of the fore end of the reach.
7 It will be seen that in the operation of the vehicle the child propels it by means of the hand-levers 6 and guides it with his feet by means of the fore Wheel, his feet resting on the supports 15, and in order to provide for his advancing age and size or for children of different sizes the adjustability of the said hand-levers in their holes 7, the foot rests or supports in their holes 16, and the slotted reach in its guideway or groove 21 form simportion for said tricycle, a guide-wheel mounted in the said latter portion, adjustable footrests formed in the fore portion, a U-shaped reach connecting the body and fore portions,
said reach being provided with a longitudinal slot therein, a seat mounted on the body portion, a bolt extending through said seat and adapted to slide in the slot of the reach, said seat provided with grooves to receive the rear end of the reach, hand-levers connected to said running-wheels, said levers being pivoted to the reach, and means for adjusting the said levers.
