GLASS-RETAINING DEVICE FOR CONTAINERS.
Specification of Letters Patent. t t Sept 14:, 1920 Application filed May 29, 1929. Serial No. 385,313.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, JAMES RIZZUTO, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Orleans, in the parish of Orleans and State of Louisiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Glass -Retaining' container at a reasonable profit.
Another object is to provide a glass retaining device which will hold the glass in position in engagement with the retaining flanges, in case the container or box is inverted or turned upside down to empty the crumbs and the like from the container prior to refilling the container.
Still another object is to provide a retaining device, wherein the inner surface of the wall of the box or container has retaining flanges adjacent the marginal portion of the opening in the face of the box to be engaged by the glass insert, in combination with a bar extending across one face of the glass adjacent one edge thereof and connected to opposite sides of the container of the box, and a member pivotally mounted upon the bar including a clamp at one end overlying the bar and the glass to retain the glass in position thereby preventing movement of.
the glass in a plane parallel with the face of the container when the container is turned upside down.
While the design and construction at pres ent illustrated and set forth is deemed preferable, it is obvious that as a result of a reduction of the invention to a more practical form for commercial purposes, the invention may be susceptible to changes, and the right to these changes is claimed, provided they are comprehended within the scope of what is claimed.
The invention comprises further features and combination of parts, as will be herein after. set forth, shown in the drawings and claimed.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a view of a cracker box or container showing the glass retaining member in dotted lines,
Fig. 2 is a sectional view through the box or container on line 2-2 of Fig. 1, showing the flanges on the inner surface of the wall of the container, and illustrating the trans verse bar and the clamp,
Fig. 3 is a sectional view'on line 3-3 of Fig. 2 showing the engagement of the clamp with the retaining bar and the'glass, it being obvious that should the container be turned upside down or inverted the glass will remain in position,
Fig. 4 is a detail view of the pivoted member and the clamp.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates a conventional form of cracker box or other container, the front face 2 of which is provided with an elongated opening 3; and 4: denotes a glass insert for covering the opening. The side and bottom walls of the container are provided with inwardly projecting retaining flanges 5 and 6, which are ar ranged adjacent the inner face of the front wall and overlie the marginal portion of the glass insert. Extending transversely of the container and spaced from the inner surface of the front wall of the container at a point substantially midway the height of the front wall is a bar 7; This bar 7 may be secured firmly in position to the side walls by any suitable means, say for instance, by soldering or spot-welding as indicated at 8, and is adapted to overlie the upper edge of the glass insert, to additionally prevent the glass from movement inwardly of the container.
Pivoted at 9 on the bar is a clamp or clip carrying element 10. This element 10 is twisted as shown at 11 so that the end portion 12 of the element may engage flatwise while the jaw 15 overlies the inner face of the transverse bar 8, and is bent upon itself as at 16, and returned as shown toward the end of the carrying element 10, and tern1inates in lateral lug 17 to be engaged by the fore-finger and thumb to detach the clip or clamp from engagement with the bar. The folded portion of the arm 15 of the clip or clamp is bent forwardly so as to provide a lug 18 which overlies the lower edge of the transverse bar 8 and holds the carrying element in such a position that the carrying element will abut the upper edge of the glass and retain the glass insert securely in position. it is obvious that in case the container is inverted or turned upside down in order to empty the crumbs and the like from the interior of the box prior, to refilling the container, the glass will be prevented from displacement.
The invention having been set forth, what claimed as new and useful is l. The combination with a container having an opening in one of its walls and provided with means upon the inner surface of the side and bottom walls for retainii glass insert ever the opening, a bar extending transversely of one wall of the container at a point above the opening, a glassin'sert engaging said retaining means and between the bar and the wall, a clamp carrying element pivoted on the bar and having a part overlying one edge of the bar and the glass insert, and a U-shaped clamp carried by the element and straddling the glass and the bar and having means overlying one edge oi the bar to retain the glass insert in po sition.
2. The combination with a container having an opening in one of its walls, a bar po sitioned transversely of the inner surface of I carried by the wall having the opening, a glass insert positioned between the bar and the wall having the opening, to cover the opening, an element pivoted on the bar and having a portion overlying one edge of the bar and one edge or" the glass insert, a U-shaped clamp the end of the element adapted to straddle the bar and the glass, one arm of the clamp being bent upon itself and the end of the bent portion terminating in a lug to be en aged by the finger for discngaging the clamp, the arm where it is bent having a lateral lug overlying the lower edge of the bar, thereby cooperating with the arch of the clamp to retain the glass insert in position in case the container is inverted.
3. The combination with a. container having an opening in one of its walls, a bar positioned transversely of the inner snrilace oi the wall which has the opening, a glass in sert positioned between the bar and the all to cover said opening, a strip 'PlVOiJQCl'OIl the bar and having a portion overlyin one edge of the bar and one edge of the glass insert, a clamp carried by the end of said strip, and being constructed from a single piece of sheet metal bent U form to straddle the bar and the glass, to clamp the glass face of the bar, one arm of the clamp being bent upon itself and returned upwardly and inwardly and terminating in a lug to be engaged by the finger for disengaging the clamp, the arm where it is bent being formed with a lateral lug overlying the lower edge of the bar, thereby cooperating with the arch of the clamp to return the glass insert in case the container is inverted.
In testimony whereof I hereunto afiix my signature. 7
JAMES RIZZUTO.
