CLOSURE.

This invention relates to closures for apertures in containers, packages and the like. An object of the invention is to provide a closure which may he adjusted to form a pouring aperture when in one position and which may expose an opening sufficiently large to receive a .spoon or the like when in another position, and which will maintain the container in a substantially sealed condition when closed, so that the contents will not be spilled or exposed to the air.
Another object is to provide a closure which may be economically manufactured.
`With the above and other objects in view the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, as Will be more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

The cylindrical container 1 has a permanent top 2 provided With arectangular aperture 3. Ears 4 project from the edges 5 of the top 2 into said aperture 3, while notches 6 are formed in the edges 5 of the top 2 to the rear of the ears 4. A slidable closure 7 has ears 8 at its inner end 9 anda turned down edge 10 at its outer end. The inner end 9 of the slidable closure 7 is inserted in the notchesso that it underlaps the edges 5 While the ears 8 of the closure 7 are posi-l tioned to overlap the edges 5, thereby causing a frictional engagement of the closure with the top when in any adjusted position. The edge of the inner end 9 of the closure 7 preferably overlaps the edge 11 of the rectangular aperture when in closed position,v
While the turned-down edge 10 of the closure 7 engages a lside of the container 1 to limit the inward movement of the closure. A notch 12 in the inner end 9 of the slidable closure 7 cooperates `with a notch 13 in the edge 11 of the permanent top 2 to form a` 1925. Serial No. 35,733.

Figures 3, 4 and 5 embody a slightly modified form of my invention in that the edges 5 of the top 2 are slightly stepped or raised as shown at 14 While the inner end 9 in` cluding the ears 8 of the closure 7 are sufficientlv stepped orraised as shown at 15 so that the closure proper is disposed beneath the raised edges 5 While the inner end 9 of the closure is disposed above the edge 11 of the top 2, thereby causing a tighter fit between the slidable closure and the permanent top.
What I claim as my invention is:
1. The combination with a container having a rectangular opening in a Wall thereof, the edge of said opening having a notch therein of a Width less than that of said opening, of ears projecting Within said opening from opposite edges thereof` and a closure engaged below said ears and above said first-mentioned edge, 4 and slidable to and from said notched edge and forming, in one position of its sliding travel, a pouring aperture jointly with said notch.
2. The combination With a container having an opening in a Wall thereof, and having a pair of ears projecting into vsaid opening from two of its opposite margins, of a sliding closure for said opening having opposite margins engaged beneath said ears, said closure having a pair of ears engaging above said opposite margins of said opening.
3. The combination set forth in claim 2, the ears of said closure being engageable through sliding of said closure with the ears of said wall to limit such sliding.
4. The combination with a container having an opening in a Wall thereof, and having a pair of ears projecting into said opening from opposite margins thereof, and notches formed in said margins to the rear of said ears and a transverse margin of the opening, of a closure having opposite edges engaged in said notches and beneath said ears, and formed Iwith a pair of ears projecting from said edges and slidably engaging above said margins of the opening..
5. The combination with a container having an opening in a Wall thereof, -of a sliding closure for said opening having a mar- !O gins .are adjacent to each other. u
6. The combination with a container having an opening in a Wall thereof,l of a sliding closu're for said opening, said closure and opening having margins variably spaced by sliding of said closure, each of said margins being formed with a notch relatively small in dimensions in comparison with the Y diameter of said opening, said notches co.- acting when said margins are adjacent to form a reduced outlet for the container.
