Description
3. STANKO.
NEEDLE HOLDER.
APPLICATION man MAY 24, 1919.
1, 349,232 Patented Aug. 10, 1920.
ATTORNE UNITED STATES FPZATENT OFFICE.
JOHN STANKO, 0F K001. WYOMING.
NEEDLE-HDLDER.
1,349,232. Application filed May 24,
To. all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN STANKo, a citizen of Poland, residing at Kooi, county of Sheridan and State of Wyoming, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Needle-Holders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in needle holders such as are used by seamstresses, housewives. and others. and has as its special object the provision of means whereby needles, pins and like small slender cylindrical articles may be neatly and safely contained in a convenient manner.
A further object is to provide a holder in which the pins and needles are easily accessible upon the opening of the same.
As seen in this figure the pivot point 20 for the block 18 is located well in advance of the point of support by strap 21 so that the elastic strap will not have the tendency to throw the block 18 forward on its face, but will hold it in the position shown.
And a still further object is to provide means whereby the points of such articles may be easily and conveniently sharpened, such means being provided in the holder or casing.
These and other like objects are attained by the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter described, and shown in the accompanying drawings, forming a material part of this disclosure, and in which- Figure l is front elevational view showing a needle holder made in accordance with the invention, the same being shown in an open position.
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary sectional view taken on line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fi 3 is a vertical sectional View showing the needle holding element extended ready for use, and
Fig. 4 is an end view of the entire device.
Referring to the drawings, a rectangular case is generally indicated by the numeral 10, the same having a back and bottom wall connected by sides, while engaged by the hinges 11 is a cover 12, provided in its outer edge with a catch 14, en ageable with an extending knob 15, secure upon the opposite Wall of the container or casing.
A block 18, preferably of wood, is formed with a plurality of steps 19 reducing its thickness from its base to the top, by gradual increments, the block being pivoted upon Specification of Letters Patent. Patented A 10 192() 1919. Serial No. 299,441.
Arranged in each of the several steps 19 are recesses 22 in which are secured cork in serts 23, the same extending slightly above the tops of each of the successive steps, and into which may be readily entered pointed instruments, such as pins or needles. as i11=li- (MC- l by the numeral 25, the same being held therein frictionally and without damage to their sharply pointed ends.
Formed with the inner surface of the cover plate 12, is an extending bracket 26, recessed longitudinally and adapted to contain a block of emery 27, upon which the points of the needles or pins may be repointed or resharpened in an obvious manner, thus forming a very complete equipment for the use of housewives or others, who have use for such articles.
In operation, it being presumed, that the cover 12 is engaged over the open face of the casings 10 by hook or snap connections, when it is desired to remove one of the pins, the fastenings are released, the cover swung outwardly upon the hinges 11, whereupon the articles contained within the cork inserts can be conveniently removed, the entire block 18 being swung outwardly upon the pivots 20 due to the pull of the elastic tape 21, so that any of the articles contained in the inserts are readily accessible, and it will be obvious that when rotating the points upon the blocks 27, they may be sharpened to any desired degree.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. In a needle holder, the combination with a hollow rectangular casing, a cover hingedly engaged therewith, and means for securing said cover when in a closed position, of a block pivotally engaged in said casing, means in said block for containing sharpened implements, and an elastic tape secured to the base of said block upon one end and to the bottom of said casing to the other end, whereby said block is propelled outwardly when said cover is in an open position.
2. In a needle holder, the combination with a hollow rectangular casing, a cover hingedly engaged therewith, and means for securing said cover when in aiclmsed position,
of a block pivoted at its base near the marginal edges of said casing, and adapted to 5 be received wholl Y thereWithin, a plurality of recessed steps (armed in said biOGk,'GO1'k inserts secured in the recesses, said cork inserts being receptive o'f sharpened cylindrical im lements, an elastic tape secured With- 10 in said casing upon the bottom wall thereof at one end, and upon the base of said block at the othermd whereby said block is forced outwardly when the cover is released, and a sharpening means secured u on the inner surface of said cover adapte to be used in 15 wmaection with said lmplements.
In testimony whereof I have afiixed my signature.
JOHN STANKO.
