Be it'known that I, CHARLES F. DATHAN, citizen of the Unitedv `States of America, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, Vhave invented new and useful Improvements in Torpedo-Nets for Ships,r of which' the following is a speciication. l

It is the 'primaryvr aim and object of the Y present invention to provide a device of the `above character designed to surround that portion. of the hull 'of a vessel beneath Ythe water line to prevent torpedoes, mines, et cetera, from contacting with the hull of the Y VAs an kequally importantobject-the pres# ent invention recites the provision of a 'de'-V vic'e of the above mentioned character.

It is to be noted in this connection that minor changes in the construction and arrangementl of parts may be made without departing from the principle of operation of the various parts.

Referring now, more particularly, to the accompanying drawings there is provided a ship 1 to the sides of whose hull at a point near the water lineare connected at'suitf able intervalsy attaching plates' 2 formed with outwardly projecting'horizontally arranged ears S'betwcen which are arranged the inner ends of booms tpivoted for horizontal swinging movement between the ears bvmeans of pintles 5. The outer ends of the vbooms 4 are Jformed with inwardly'extending intersecting horizontally and vertically arranged slots 6 and 7 for a purpose that will presently appear. .The clon of Vthehull beneath the water line a shield `desirably formed of `reticulated material such aswoven wire, while suitable supporting and connecting cables 18 are trained through the adjacent ends of the sections 15 and 16 and Y15 and 17 for connecting the the cable 1S are trained through the verti-l cal slots 7 in the; outer ends of booms 4 whileextreme upper terminals are cion-v nectedf to suitable posts 19 and in'addition to connecting all sections of the shield serve `to brace the booms 4. By the provision of this Cable 22 it is-'apparent that subsequent tothe raising ofthe rear cable 20 with a view to raising the rear lboorh 8 theends'of the-cable22 are pulled so as to draw thesections v15 and 16 in close relation with .the adj aeent portions'of the hullf to consequently permit the dock-ing `of the ship when desired. .Cooperating with the front cable20 is-another cablep23 ;oneend of which is connected to a post l24 rearwardly of the forward post 19.- This cable istrained through a horizontal slot in the frontbooms I 4'and in the front-boom S tand also through the upperiedge ofthe section -17 ofthe shield preparatory to being connected at` its oppositeend to a post 25, which is disposed opposite to the post 24. y When the ends of the cable 23 a'repulled,` of course,- subsequent to the pulling of the fron-t cable`=20 upwardly the section 17will be drawn in close -relation to the adjacent portion ofthe hull'of the ship.
