HOLDER FOR PAPER DISHES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 29, 1920.
Application filed. March 24, 1920. Serial No. 368,346.
To all whom 1f/may concern.'
Be it known that I, JOHN LACKNER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Long Island City, in the county of Queens and State of N ew York, have invented a certain new and useful improvement in I-Iolders for Paper Dishes, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to that class of devices which are designed to hold a paper or other sanitary dish or receptacle for the serving of ice cream or any other desired contents. Devices of this character with which I am familiar are subject to one or more objections. lVhere no device is provided on the container to prevent the paper dish from moving around, it slides all around when the user is attempting` to partake of the contents. It becomes necessary therefore to provide some means of hoiding it against movement. This is generally done by having someI securing means extending over the upper portion of the paper dish, and thus holding it securely against tipping or rotation. This, however, while it serves the purpose of holding the dish, is highly objectionable because of the difficulty oi' ejecting the used paper dish from the container. lhere the paper snaps under a ire-- tainer of this kind, it becomes necessary to take a fork and pry it out from under the retaining memberor members, and 'n this way considerable time is lost, and it is not an easy operation.
My invention has for its object to preY vide flexible means for securing the papev dish inthe container, which may be grasped by the thumb and sprung outwardly, so tha; the dish may be ejected with perfect ease and without the slightest delay.
Inasmuch as these devices are generally in use where large quantities ol "tain are required to be served with extreme rapidity.
ing the used dish or insert and expedir. its removal of the utmost importance.
My means of accomplishing the foregoing object may be more readily'understood by having reference to the accompanying drawing, which is hereunto annexed and is a part of this specification, in which:
Figure l is a side view of a container constructed in accordance with my improvement with the paper cup inside.
Fig. 2 an isometric perspective view showing the retainers sprung outwardly, and the paper cup being ejected from the container, the thumbs or' the operator being shown in dotted lines.
Figs. 3, 4 and 5 are fragmentary detail views of a modiied form of construction.
Similar reference numerals reifer to similar parts throughout the entire description.
As shown in the drawings, the container comprises a base l, which is surmounted bv a bowl-shaped container or receptacle 2, which is adapted to receive and has mounted therein the paper dish 3.
On the outer walls of the receptacle arel mounted handles 4- and 5 which .are secured to the container by means of rivets 6 and 7, or in any other suitable or convenient wav These handles are formed of resilient ma-` terial and have their upper ends 8 bent inwardly so that they extend just inside ot the rim of the container a su'liicient distance over the edge or rim 9, of the paper dish 3, to hold it in position.
In the modified form these handles are constructed oi lugs l0, which extend outwardly 'from the wall of the container 2, and are provided with sliding members 1]., which extend inwardly a suiiicient distance to engage and hold the paper dish in place. These slides, may, if desired, be provided with springs for holding them normally in the position shown in the drawings. A suitable headed pin l2 passes through the slide and holds it in position, a slot 13, being formed in the lug 10, to permit its movement.
The operation of the device is as follows:
The dish is inserted into the container and is sufficiently iiexible so that it bends in* wardly until it has passed the inner ends 8 and 8 of the handles 4 and 5, when it will spring outwardly and be held in aosition. N hen it is desired to eject the cup, t e operator grasps the handles with his thumbs, as clearly seen in Fig. 2, and bends them outwardly when by turning the container in the position shown in Fig. 2 there is absolately no obstruction to the ejection of the paper dish, so that practically the only thing that is necessary to do is simply to take up the dish, bend the handles and turn it upside down when the paper dish drops out of the container.
In the modified form instead of bending the handles outwardly, the slides ll are slipped baci-z a suilicient distance releasing the paper dish. lt will be apparent that as soon as the handles are released they spring back into the position shown in Fig. l and the container is ready to receive another paper dish.
Although l have described a specific embodiment of my invention, l do not desire to be limited thereto as I believe Changes may be made in the form of construction, the principal `feature of which is the use of resilient means for holding the paper cup in the retainer, and l do not desire to be understood as limiting myself to the details or Construction shown and described, except es such limitations shall appear in the hereinafter contained claims.
Having described my invention what I regard as new and desire to secure by Lettersv Patent is:
l. A cup-shaped receptacle for a cup, handles formed of ieXible material, the lower ends of which are secured to the wall ot' the cup, the upper ends extending inside of the rim of the cup.
2. A container Comprising a base, a bowlshaped portion adapted to receive a paper dish, a pair of handles formed of flexible material having their lower ends secured to the bowl-shaped portion, their upper ends extending inside of the rim of the paper dish.
In testimony whereof, I have signed the foregoing specification.
JoHN LACKNER.
