Be it known that I, Ronn'r H. Lumi-:R- IiAL, u citizen of 'the United States, and a esident of Bridgeport, county of Fairfield, nd State of Connecticut, have invented ceriin new and useful Improvements in Toothrushes, of which the following is a speciliation.

The present invention relates to brushes nd has for an object to provide an iniu'oveditooth, brush of the type in whit-h rovision is made for carrying dentifrice in hat part of the device which serves as the iandle.

Brushes known as fountain brushes, ns ieretofore made, have usually been provided vith a dentifrice container, carried in fixed osition in, or upon, the brush handle. In lu'h'struotures the container has usuallv een positioned at a distance from the bristle lead and the dentifrice has been eondueted o the bristle bend by :1 tubo either formed n the brush shank or made separate. The present invention avoids the use of a 'onduetingf tube and at the same. time avoids he interferenee with free use of the brush x-' the eontniner blv innltinzgr the ('ontainer n-nnlble toward und from diseharging posi- Yion. ln the preferred embodiment of the nvention a eontainer is slidable toward the n'istle head to diseharge dentifriee onto the iris-lle head. and slidable from the bristle `wad to retraeted position to leave the bristle head free and unobstruz'ted in use.

In the construction illustrated, the handle, 1, is hollow1 to inelose the dentifrice. Preferably it is so constructed that a container ot' some type already on the market, may be inserted bodily into the carrier and easily positioned for immediate use, as, for example, a Collapsible tulle, 2, of standard type and size. Suitahle provision may be made for compressing,r the tube to extrude dentifrire hy providing an opening 3, in one side of the hollonY handle. Preferably an extruding plate l, is inserted within this openiner so as to Forni. in effort, a movable side otthe hollou4 handle. The handle is slidably mounted upon the shank 9. in snob manner that it may be slid forward to discharge dentifriee direetly onto the bristle head 9, or rearwardly away from the hristle head to n. position permitting' eonvenient use of the brush without interfen ent-e by the handle.

The bristle head may he of an)Y desired type. preferably. however. it eonsists of a ventral row of Short bristles l between rows of longer bristles ll upon hoth sides. rl`his arrangement accomplishes two funrtions: the dentifrieo is more readily retained upon the brush when projeeted into the trough so formed ond. also. the row of short liristles permits the nozzle of the dentifriee eontainer to he positioned closer to the shank T. thus facilitating a more compact and less enmbersome construction. lt is to he noted that. in noeordanee with the present invention, dentifrice is disehargeddirectiy on to the face of the brush, that is to say, with out passing through nn unsanitary conducting tube, formed in the shank of the brush or otherwise to discharge among the bristles. I thus avoid this unsanitary feature which is eon'nnon to many types of fountain brushes as heretofore devised.

'fn order to hold the handle in either its; forward or rearward position on ille shank, a spring detent ifi is secured in a slot 14 in the shank and is engaged by a detent serew l5 in the handle to hold the parts in either extreme position of adjustment.

I claim:

1. In Combination with a tooth brush having a bristle head of a holding member slidably mounted on the brush for niovenient in the general direction ol the length ot' the brush toward and troni the bristle i headA` Said member being` adapted to rumorA ably carry a dentifrice container with its discharge opening So positioned that when the member is moved toward the bristle head, the dentifrice may he discharged troni the container directly on to the fare ol the bristles.

In combination with a tooth brush ha v ilngIr a. bristle head, of a` dentifrice container' haring a discharge opening; said rontainer being mounted for sliding movement in the general diret-tion ot the lel'igth of the brash toward end from the bristle head so as lo bring the discharge opening of the ciontainer in position for discharging the dentifriee directly from the eontainer on to the bristle head when in its forward position.
