Description

w. E. JORDAN. TOP PLATE FOR STOVES.
APPLICATION FILED FEB. 4, 1918- 1337377 4. Patented Apr. 20, 1920 am ue/wtoz m G wn w Gum,
WESLEY E. JORDAN, OF ERIE, PENNSYLVANIA.
TOP PLATE FOB STOVES.
Application filed February 4, 1918.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WESLEY E. JORDAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Erie, in the county of Erie and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Top Plates for Stoves, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to top plates for stoves and consists in certain improvements in the construction thereof as will be hereinafter fully described and pointed out in the claims.
Top plates as heretofore manufactured when formed of cast metal with a continuous border have had supporting bars extending inwardly from the border but such bars have not been continuous because of the expansion or contraction incident to the intense heat directly over the burner which causes the breaking of the plates. Continuous bars are of advantage in that they form a more stable support for articles resting thereon and also permit of the moving of the articles particularly small ones over the plate with less obstruction.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings as follows Figure 1 shows a plan view of the top plate.
Fig. 2 a section on the line 22 in Fig. 1.
The plate is formed of the border made up of the sides 1 and the ends 2. Extending across the plate from border to border are the continuous bars 3. These bars are parallel and sinuous, the bends permitting of the expansion of the bars and thus pre- I Specification of Letters Patent.

venting the breaking of the plate under the heat. This is particularly important where the burner, as 4, is under the central part of the plate so that the central part is more intensely heated than the other parts. Such uneven heating is not the exception but the rule. lVhile I have shown the bars of sinuous shape and in parallel relation I do not in the broader phases of my invention wish to be so limite I have shown in the accompanying drawings the preferred form of my construction but I do not wish to be limited specifically to the construction there shown and while I have shown the border of the plate forming m invention as the extreme edge of the plate do not wish to be limited as to this.
What I claim as new is 1. The combination of a burner and a top plate subjected to the direct action of the burner. and having a continuous border and continuous bars extending from border to border, said border and bars being formed integrally of cast metal and said bars having expanding bends therein.
2. The combination of a burner and a top plate subjected to the direct action of the burner and having a continuous border and continuous bars extending sinuously and parallel from border to border, said border and bars being formed integrally of cast metal.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set m hand.
y WESLEY E. JORDAN.
