Specification of Letters Patent.
Patentea Feb. 8, 1920.
Application flled September 4, 1918. Serial No. 252,570.
'1 'o all whom fit may cancer/L: i
Be it known that I, ROBERTV I. MCNAUGH- TON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Minot, in the county 'of Ward and State of North Dakota, have-invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sack-Holders, of which the following is a specification.
This inVention relates to sack holders and inore particularly to'animproved device for holding a grain sack or the like whilethe same is being filled.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a sackrholder which' can be readily taken apart or folded'to occupy a minimum of space when not in use or when being shipped, the holder proper for the sack being so constructed as to more tightly clamp the sack as the weight 'within the sack increases, novel meansv being also provided for supporting the sack upon the clamp and for adjusting the clamp along the post of the holder and otherwise simplifying the construction of the device, as will lbe hereinafter pointed out. I
With the above objects and others in View as will appear as thedescription proceeds, the invention comprises the novel features of construction, combination of elements and arrangement of parts which will beimore 'fully described in the followingspecification vand thenl set forth with particularity in the clausesof the claims appended hereto.
Reference is had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this application, wherein similar characters of reference will Vreferv to corresponding parts throughout the several Views, in which- Flgure 1 1s a perspectlve View of my 1mproVed sack holder with a sack applied thereto, a portion of the' sack being broken away,
Fig- 2 is a fragmentary plan View of the holder, a
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary sectional front ele- Vation; w
Fisz. 4 is a' Vertical sectional View taken on the line 4-4 of Fig. 3,
Fig'. 5 is a Vertical sectional detail showing' one of the foldable legs for the post or standard of the sack holder. and
Fig'. 6 is a sectional detailshowing the manner of clamping the sack.
MV improved sack holder is shown as comprising a Vertical post or standard 10 in the form a T-beam, having the lower portion thereof shown at 11, bent so that the i the letter.
wings thereof are disposed equidistantly apart, that is to produce equal angles therebetween. This means serVes for the attachmentof the legs 12,'said legs consistingv of Vertically disposed inner portions having Atheir inner extremities bent upwardly as shown at 13 and pivotally connected as shown at 14 adjacent to the bent portions thereof, horizontally to the fianges or wings of the portion 11 of the standard or post. The free ends of the legs are twisted to provide horizontal tread portionsl and o the Vertical portions 13 are split as shown at 16, so as to'be adjusted or'bent to engage the flanges or wings of the post as is particularly shown in Figs. 1- and 5 of the drawings, to dispose the legs for proper engagement with the ground ,or supporting surface below the bottom of said post or standard, as well as to permit the same to be extended contiguously With the post or'standard, for'occupying a the flansre portion of the standard and which is secured to said Vcross arm bV a flange, as shown at 21 intermediatelv of the lengthof The standard is provided with a series of openings 22 spaced apart Verticallv to receive pins 23, disposed through said openings in coniunction with corresnondinglV spaced openinsrs in the sleeVe 20. therebV permitting Vertical adjustment of th holder proper. w
The lower portion of each end of the portion 19 thereof is bent rearwardlv toprovide apertured ears or clips 24 in which are piV- otallV enn'aged inwardlv extending extre'mities 25 of a sack sunportino' hoon 26. said hoon havinn' its end portio'ns bent downwardlv as shown at 27 and then bent inwardlv tn ensran'e said ears in order that the hoonwill he piVotallV supported upon the cross arm to permit it to he raised wherebv the hoon will be diseno'anted from the borizontal portion 18 of the cross arm or to be supported by said horizontal portion vvhen the sack 28 1s supported uponthe hoop.
In order to sustain the weight 'of the sack and contents, the Vertical portion 19 .of the;`
cross arm`is slotted at spaced points and b'ent rearwardly to provide a guideway 29 engag- Vdraizvn,tizht1-y, so that the 'sack 'will extend between the portions ofthe loop which cross the horizontal portion 18 ofvthe cross arm,
and said cross arm, and extend'betweenl said side portions of the loop or yoke 26, thereby exerting pressure against the sack so thatv it will be more tightly clamped in position, the more Weight the sack eXerts thereon by reason of the increase in the volume of lthe contents of the sack and its Weight. This isone of the principal features of the invention, as it ,is a very eflicient means for supporting the sack and for tightly gripping the same by theweight of the contents thereof, the grip becoming more firm asthesack is filled. It will also be observed that the sack ex- 1 tendsvv across 'the top `portion 18 ofthe cross t;Emma the :foregongderietienltakehffn connection `;with .the a' l'wmnaapaiaizi ng draw hensive understanding of the construction, operation and advantages of my invention maybe had, and while Ihave shown and described the device as embodying a specific structure, I desire that it be understood that such changesmay be made in saidstructure as do not depart from the spirit and` scopeof the invention as' claimed' Having thus described my inventiom What standard, cross bar slidablyj connected with w the standard and provided with va depen'dingf* y flange havingengagement With the standard, the end portions of the flange being'cut and bent toprovide rearwardly extending' ears, and a yyoke having its armsextending across .the cross bar and providedfwith clepending` '1 end portions fitting into openings formed in theears.V f
