EXTENSION-TABLE.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, ETA/[ER A. HENsAL, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Panora, in the county of Guthrie and State of Iowa, have invented a certain new and useful Extension-Table, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to atable of the extensible type.
The object of my device is to provide a table adapted when in one form to serve as a small, ordinary table, and when in another form, adapted to serve as a large table, utilizing the small table as a means for serving the larger one.
A further object of my invention is to provide a table of small diameter, which can be extended laterally from the periphery of a small table thereby forming a table of larger diameter.
A further object is to provide a table of the ordinary type, which can be enlarged by placing supporting brackets upon the base of the table, and by placing a plurality of segments around the periphery of the ordinary table, thereby making a large table.
A further object is to provide a table designed to normally occupy a minimum amount of space and capable of enlargement whereby the table may be used for various purposes.
A further object is to provide a fixed table having a rotary table thereon, having a sectional, extensible table extended laterally upon the periphery of the rotary table, and then having it detachably fixed to the fixed table, whereby the center or rotary table may be rotated so that various objects placed upon the center or rotary .table may be brought before any of the users of the table without the necessity of liftin or carrying any of the objects from place i0 place, and yet when it is desired to utilize only the-center table, the extensible part may be disassembled and removed therefrom, leaving a small ordinary type of table.
With these and other objects in view my invention consists in the construction, arrangement and combination of the various parts of the device, whereby the objects contemplated are attained, as hereinafter more fully set forth, pointed out in my claims, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which: V

A reference numeral 10 indicates a base or post for supporting the table. The base 10 has'the legs 11 thereon. A table'l2 is fixed to the base 10 having a central opening 13 therein. Brackets 14 extending from the base 10, extend outwardly and upwardly and are secured at their outer and upper'end to the fixed table 12. Rotatably mounted on the fixed table 12 is a table'15. . Beads or extensions 17 are-placed on the underside of the rotary table 15, thereby making it relatively easy to rotate the table 15 upon the fixed table 12. The rotary table 15 has a series of spaced openin s 18 near its periphery. Handles or kn'o 's 19- are adapted to be received in the openings 18. The knobs 19 form a means whereby they may be gripped, so that the table 15-1nay be rotated. The base 10 has the opening 20 therein, in which is received one end of the bracket 21. The leg 11 has the-upper side fiat so that the bracket 21 may rest against the" leg 11, and form a; brace between the base'10 and the bracket21 for'supporting the bracket. The bracket 21', which is re ceived in" the opening 20, has-pairs of spaced, upwardly, extending lug's 22-on its free end 'anannu-lar" ring; comprising segments in which are the openings 24: and 25. The openings 24 and 25 are adapted to receive the pins 22 upon the upper end of the bracket 21.
The brackets 21 are so. designed and so spaced that one of the segments of the annular ring 23 will be received between two of the brackets. The brackets 21 receive one pair of the openings 24 of one of the segments 23, and the openings 25 of one of the other segments. The two ends of the segments 23 rest upon the bracket 21 and are supported thereby, and the pins 22 prevent any movement of the segments.
In order to prevent any outward move ment of the bracket 21, I have provided a brace 26, which is hin'ged to the base 10 by means of the hinge 27. The braces 26 extend outwardly from the base 10 and have a hook member 28 on their outer end. A coacting hook member 29 is secured to the bracket 21, so that the hook members 28 of the brace 26 and the hook member 29 of the bracket 21 will engage each other, thereby preventing any outward movement of the bracket. The fixed table 12 has a plurality of spaced hooks 30 in its periphery. The extensible table A is made up of a plurality of segments 31. The segments 31 have on their under side a yielding member 32, designed to coact with the hooks 30 on the fixed table 12. The yielding member 32 is fixed to the segments 31 at 33. The member 32 has the curved portions 34 thereon, and the forwardly extending portions 35. The portion 35 is bent, so that the ends 36 do not bend clear back to the member 34, but are spaced therefrom about the distance of the thickness of the hook 30. By clamp ing the members 32 together and moving them to position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 11, the members 32 may be disengaged from the hook 30.
The distance between the curved portion 34: and the end36 is so that the member 30 will fit snugly between them, and there by prevent any play or any movement. The segments 31 have on one end a projecting portion 37, which is adapted to be received in a recess 38 formed in the opposite end of themembers 31. The projection 37 will be inserted into the recess 38 of the adjacent member and so on until the complete amount' of segments have been assembled. The segments 31 interlock with each other by means of the proje tion 37 and the recesses 38, thereby preventing any lateral or sideward movement of the segments relative to each other. The segments 31 have the downwardly extending flange 39 thereon. The segments 31 are adapted to be supported on the annular ring 23, and to be held to the fixed table by means of the hooks 30 and the yielding members 32.
The device is so designed that the upper surfaces of the rotary table 15 will lie in the same horizontal plane as the upper surface of the sectional table A. The rotary table 15 is free to move independent o1 the sectional table, so that the users of the table may move the rotary table, and yet notintert'cre with their dishes, which are designed to be placed upon the extension table A.
In the practical operation or in the assembling of the device, so that it may be used as an extension table, an ordinary table, as is shown in Fig. 3, is provided and the brackets 21 are inserted in the openings 20 in the segments 23 of the annular ring, and are placed upon the upper end of the brackets 21 with the openings 24 and 25 in the segments coacting with the pins 22 upon the upper end of the bracket 21. This will form a complete annular ring around the table. Then the braces 26, which extend from the base 10 are swung upwardly and outwardly on their hinge 27 and brought to such a position, so that the coacting members 28 and 29 may become engaged, thereby forming a positive support and preventing any outward movement of the brackets 21 relative to the base 10.
As a means of bracing, the legs 11 are so adapted on their upper ends as to serve as an additional bracing means for the brackets 21.
When the table is not used as a large table, the brackets 21 are removed therefrom, and the braces 26 are allowed to swing downwardly and rest against the post or base 10. as is shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings.
After the brackets 21 have been placed in their proper position, and the segments of the annular band 23 have been placed thereon, then the extension table A comprising the segments 31 are placed upon the annular band 23, and the yielding member 32 is caused to be engaged with the hook 30 on the fixed table. As soon as one of the segments 31 has been placed in position and is resting upon the annular band 23 and is detachably fixed to the fixed table 12 by means of the members 32 and 30, then a second segment is placed adjacent to the first segment. As the segments are continued to be placed around the table, the recess 38 of one of the segments is placed over the extension or projection 37 of the adjaing dishes may be. brought in front. of the user of the individual dishes, and he: may
then help himself without the necessity of having the serving dishes lifted ofi the table or passed from place to place as is the ordinary custom.
The knobs 19 are detachably fixed to the table 15. When the extensible table is used, the knobs 19 are placed in the openings 18, the knobs forming handles, so-that the" operators'may'use the knobs for gripping the rotary table, so that it may be rotated. When the table is used asanordinary small table, that is when the extensible table is removed, the knobs 19 may be taken out, leaving an ordinary fiat surface, which can be used as any ordinary table.
Some changes may be made in the construction and arrangement of my extension table, without departing from the real purpose and spirit of my invention, and it is my intention to cover by my claims any modified forms of structure or use of mechanical equivalents, which may be reasonably included within their scope.
I claim as my invention:
1. In a device of the class described, a post supported on legs, a fixed table mounted thereon, a rotary table mountedon said fixed table, outwardly and upwardly extending brackets detachably fixed to said post, means on the free end of said brackets for receiving an annular ring, a hinged member extending from the upper end of said post and secured to the upper end of said brackets for limiting the outward move ment of said brackets and means for fixing a sectional table to said fixed table whereby said sectional table will rest upon said an nular ring.
2. A table comprising a base, a fixed table on said base, a rotary table mounted on said first table, a sectional table comprising a plurality of segments, each segment having a clip designed to register with and coact with a hook fixed to said first table whereby said segments may be held in proper position relative to said first table and an annular ring comprising sections supported below said segments forming a rest for supporting said segments.
3. A table comprising a basemounted on legs, a table fixed to said base, a plurality of spaced hooks around the periphery of said table, a rotary table pivotally mounted on said first table, said rotary table having its edges extended laterally beyond the first table, said rotary table having a plurality of spaced openings therein, handle members detachably mounted. in said openings, outwardly and upwardly extending brackets having one end received in an opening in said base and the free end of said brackets having spaced pins thereon for receiving sections of an annular ring and a sectional table adapted to be placed upon said annular therein, handle members detachably mounted.

A table comprising a base mounted on legs, a table fixed to said base, a rotary table pivotally mounted on said first table, said rotary table having its edges extended laterally beyond the first table, said rotary table having a plurality of spaced openings therein, outwardly andupwardly extending brackets having one end received in an opening in said base, members hinged .to said base and extending outwardly therefrom and means on the far end of said members designed to engage the outwardly and upsaid table, a rotary table pivotally mounted on said first table, said rotary table having its edges extended laterally beyond the first table, said rotary table having a plurality of spaced openings therein, outwardly and upwardly extending brackets having one end received in an opening in said base and .the free end of said brackets having spaced pins thereon for receiving sections of an annular ring and a sectional table adapted to be placed upon said annular ring, said sectional table comprising a plurality of segments, said segments having means for coacting with said hooks, whereby said segments are held in position, and means for rotating said rotary table relative to said sectional table.

A table comprising a base mounted on legs, a table fixed to said base, a rotary table pivotally mounted on said first table, said rotary table having its edges extended laterally beyond the first table, said rotary table having a plurality of spaced openings therein, handle members detachably mounted in said openings, outwardly and upwardly extending brackets having one end received in an opening in said base, and the free end of said brackets having spaced pins thereon for receiving sectionsof an annularring, and an extension table extending laterally from the periphery of said rotary table, and adapted to be supported by said annular ring.

A table'comprising a base mounted on legs, a table fixed to said base. a rotary table pivotally mounted on said first table, said rotary table having its edges extended laterally beyond the first table, said rotary table having a plurality of spaced openings therein, handle members detachably mounted in said openings, outwardly and upwardly extending brackets having one end received in an opening in said base and the free end of said brackets having spaced pins thereon for receiving sections of an annular ring, a sectional table adapted to be placed upon said annular ring, said sectional table comprising a plurality of segments extending laterally from the periphery of said rotary table, said extension table comprising a plurality of segments adapted to interlock with each other, and to be detachably fixed to said fixed table and to be supported by said annular ring, whereby any movement of said extension table relative to said fixed table is prevented.
