LOCK FOR HANDBAGS, APPLICATION FIL'ED JUNE 20. I919.
7 1,326,723. Patented Dect30, 1919.
' WITNESSES I mmvron W S W moms/Wm v Sr ATTORNEYS WOLF T. GOLDSMITH, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY.
LOOK FOR HANDBAGS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 30, 1919.
Application filed June 20, 1919. Serial No. 305,522.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VVoLr T. GOLDSMITH, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved Lock for Handbags, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in hand-bag frames, and it pertains more particularly to a lock therefor.
The primary object of the invention is to provide means by which the operation of the securing member of the two frame members is prevented.
Referring to the drawings- Figure 1 is a view in elevation partly broken away, and showing the position of the parts in their locked position;
Fig. 2 is a sectional View on the line 22 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the line 33 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 41 is a sectional view on the line 4-%L of Fig. 3;
Fig. 5 is a sectional view on the line 55 of Fig. 1.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, the device comprises two frame members 10 and 11, which are pivotally secured together as at 12. The member 11 is provided on its outer edge with a right-angular flange 13, and secured to said flange 13 on its under face, as at 14, is a resilient member 15. This resilient member 15 is provided with a downwardly bent portion 16 and its free end is bent upwardly into the same plane as its body portion as designated at 17.
Secured to the portion 17 and extending through an opening 18 in the flange 13, isa shank l9, and secured to the free upper end of said shank 19 is an operating button 20, the purpose of which will be hereinafter described.
The opposite frame member 10 is provided with a rigid hook 21, and said hook 21 is adapted to engage over the downwardly bent portion 16 of the resilient member 15, as shown in Figs. 1 and 5, to lock the frame members in closed relation to each other.
The reference character 22 designates the pull link, and as shown, said pull link is 1'0- tatably mounted in the frame member 10, by means of the stud 28. The inner end ofthe stud 23 is provided with a cam member 2a, said cam member 2% being adapted to be rotated by said pull link.
The frame members 10 and 11 are provided on their inner faces with angular members 25 of metal, and said angular members form the means by which the material from which the bag is formed is secured to the frame members.
The operation of the device is as follows:
For ordinary purposes, engagement of the hook 21 with the resilient member 15 will be sufficient to hold the frame members closed. When, however, it is desired to secure the bag frame against opening, the pull link 22 is rotated, which action causes the cam to engage the under face of the resilient member 15 to prevent its being depressed out of engagement with the hook 21.
When it is desired to open'the bag, the pull link is rotated to disengage the cam as from the resilient member 15, at which time the latter is free to be depressed out of engagement with the hook 21 and per 1113 said opening of the bag.
I claim:
1. A look for hand bag frames comprising in combination with a plurality of hinged closure members, a rigid hook carried by one of said hinged closure members, a spring carried by the other of said closure members and adapted to engage with said hook to maintain the closure members in closed relation, an operating button carried by said spring and projecting through the closure member to which it is secured for disengaging the spring and hook to permit of opening of the closure members, a pull link rotatably mounted in one of said closure members, and a rotary cam operated by said pull link, and adapted to engage the spring at a point heneath the operating button to preventdisengagement of the spring and hook and thereby lock said closure members.
2. In a hand bag, the combination with its closure members, a securing means and a pull link, of rotary means operated by said pull link and adapted to engage the securing means for preventing operation thereof.
WOLF T. GOLDSMITH.
