To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, MARCUS T. GOLDSMITH, a citizen of the United. States, and a resident of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved Locking Device for Frames of Bags, Purses, and like Articles, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved locking device for the frames of bags, purses and similar articles, and arranged to securely hold the frame members locked when in closed position with a view to prevent accidental or surreptitious opening of the frame and abstraction of the contents of the bag, purse or similar article by unauthorized persons.

Another object is to provide a locking device which is simple and durable in construction, readily applicable to bag frames as now generally constructed, and not liable to get easil out of order.

lVith these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction as hereinafter shown and described and then specifically pointed out in the claims.

A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.

Figure 1 is a side elevation of the improved locking device as applied to the frame of a hand bag, part of one of the frame members being broken out and the other frame member being shown in section;

Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same with the stems of the knobs of the locking device shown in section;

Fig. 3 is an enlarged cross section of the same on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2; and

Fig. 4: is an enlarged sectional plan view of the same on the line 4.l of Fig. 1.

The frame members 10 and 11 are pivotally connected with each other by pivots 12 to permit the frame members toswing into open or closed position. Under the top of the frame member 11 is arranged a spring 15 secured at one end by a lug 16 in place on the frame member 11. The free end of the spring 15 is provided with a keeper 17 provided witha knob 18, the stem 19 of which extends through an elongated slot 20 formed in the top of the member 11. The keeper 1. is provided with an opening 21 to providev a slightly beveled front member 22 adapted i to be engaged by the beveled head 25 of a' catch 26 secured to the frame member 10 at the inner side thereof, as plainly indicated in Figs. 3 and 4. It will be noticed that by the arrangement described the catch 26 snaps into engagement with the keeper 17 frame members 10 and 11 into open position.

In order to lock the spring 15 and its keeper 17 and knob 18 against downward movement to prevent accidental or surreptitious opening of the frame members 10 and 11, use is made of a locking arm 30 pivoted at 31 to the inner side of the frame member 11, and this locking arm extends through a slot 32 formed in the top of the frame member 11, and theouter end of the arm is provided with a knob 33 under the control of the user for swinging the looking arm 30 into looking or unlocking position. The locking arm 30 is provided with a nose or projection 34 adapted to pass under the free end of the keeper 17 at the time the latter is in uppermost locking position relative to the head 25 ofthe catch 26. It will be noticed that when the nose 34: is in this locking position, as shown in the drawings, the spring 15 and its keeper 17 and knob 18 are held against downward movement and consequently the frame members 10 and 11 are held in lockedposition. When it is desired to unlock the keeper 17 and its spring 15 and knob 18 then the user takes hold of the knob 33 and swings the locking arm 30 over to the right into the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1

whereby the nose 34 moves out from under the keeper 17 and hence the latter is unlocked, and the spring 15 can now be swung downward on the user pressing the knob 18 for disengaging the head 25 of the fixed I catch 26, as above explained.

In order to hold the spring 15 and its keeper 17 against lateral movement, use is 1 made of guideways 40 and 11, of which the.

tending through the opening 21 in the the arrangement described an exceedingly strong and durable construction is provided to guide the keeper 1-7 in its up and down movement and to hold the catch 26 in firm engagement with thekeeper thus insuring a tight closing of the frame members 10 and 11'. It will alsobe noticed that by the use of thegspring arm 30 the keeper 17 is locked against movement at" the time the fixed catch 26 engages the keeper to' Securely hold the frame members 10- and 11 locked against accidental or surreptitious opening by unauthorized persons.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire tosecure by Letters Patent z- 1. In a hand bag, purse orsimil'ar'art'icl'e, a pair of frame members hinged together, aspring attached at one end to one ofthe frame members and provided at its free end with a keeper, a catch fixedonthe other frame member and adapted to engage the said keeper to lock' the frame members in closed position, and a locking arm pivoted on the said frame member carrying the spring, the said locking arm having means engaging the said? keeper to-hol'd: the latter against movement at the time the catch engages the keeper to prevent unlocking and opening of the frame members.

i 2; In a"- hand bag, purse or similar article, a pair of frame members hinged together, a spring attached at one end to one of the frame members'and provided at its-free end with a keeper having a slot, a catch fixed on the other frame member and adapted to snap intoengagement with the slot, a guide pin fixed onthe said frame member carrying the spring, the said guide pin extending through the said keeper slot, and a locking arm pivotedion the said frame member carrying" the spring, the said locking arm having a knob extending to the" outside of thesaid frame member, the said locking arm. having a nose adapted to engage the under side of the said keeper to lock the latter against downward movement, andthus prevent disengagement of the catch from thekeeper.
