PILL OW SHAM HOLDER.
APPLICATION FILED JUNE 7, l9l 9.

ANNA GrU'JJI-I, OF NEW YORK, NJ 32'.
PILLOW-strain HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
. Patented N 0v. 18, 1919.
Application filed June 7, 1919." Serial No. 302,465.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ANNAGUTH, a citizen of the United States, and residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pillow-Sham Holders, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those'skilled" in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to pillow sham holders, and the object thereof is to provide a device of the class specified which consists of an improved framework adapted to be placed in front of the pillows of a bed in an inclined or partially upright position together with improved means for securing a pillow sham thereto; a further object being to provide a device of this class com posed of separate detachably connected parts, and with means for locking the separate parts together, and with these and other objects in view the invention consists in a device or devices of the class specified, constructed as hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention herein shown and described is an improvement on that described and claimed in U. S. Letters Patent granted to me April 24, 1917, No. 1,223,580, and is fully disclosed in the following specifica tion, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which:
Figure 1 is a front View of my improved pillow sham holder with part of theconstruction broken away;
Fig. 2 a longitudinal section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1 on an enlarged scale and showing the parts detached;
Fig. 3 a section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2;
Fig. l a view similar to Fig. 2 and indicating the separateparts of the holder connected and showing the same on an enlarged scale; and,
Fig. 5 a back view of one of the separate parts of my improved frame on a reduced scale. j
In the practice of my invention, I provide a pillow sham holder or frame a composed of separate parts a and a each of which is composed of rectangular frame members having yoke-shaped portions (4 composed of a rod or heavy wire, the top preferably composed of cardboard portions of which are preferably bent.rearwardly as shown at a to give the frame members a bolster effect, and secured in the ends thereof are cross head members 11, preferably composed of separate parts a separated by a central part a of cork or similar material, Secured to the outer side of each of said frame members or the parts a a and a thereof is a fibrous body-a,
or similar material, and the connection thereof with the parts aa is preferably madeby strips a glued to the front and back parts of the body a and passed around the rod or heavy wire of the parts (L -a and said body may be secured to the cross head member a by tacks or otherwise.
Each of said parts a and a of the frame (4 thus constructed is provided with fabric coverings Z), the front and back portions of which'are brought together at the bottom and stitched as shown at b to form an extension apron 6 The top of the front and back portions of the covering 6 may be secured to the cross head membera in any desired manner, or as shown in the patent above referred to.
Secured to a part of the yoke-shaped frame 0* of the part a and adjacent to one corner portion thereof is a tubular member 0. Secured to the yoke-shaped frame a of the parta adjacent to the tubular member c is a hook-shaped device 0 which is adapted to engage said tubular member 0 to lock the separate parts a a of the frame together, this construction being clearly shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 4. Attached to the adjacent ends of the cross head member a? of each of the parts a a of the frame a are look plates (Zhaving apertures or recesses d therein. Mounted in one of said lock plates ois a Ushaped spring lock device d one end of which is provided with a finger piece (Z and the other end thereof with spring fingers (i adapted to engage the outer end of the corresponding lock plate (Z to lock theseparate parts a a; of the frame together,
Ialso provide the separate parts of the framewith suspending members a, only one of which is shown, composed of an L-shaped piece of wire adapted to be swung at right angles to the cross head member a thereof so as to engage the posts of a bedstead or the like when the frame is not in use.
I also preferably secure to one of the ing the ends (Z of the lock device (Z withdrawing said ends from the corresponding lock plate and raising the part a of the frame so as to withdraw the hook-shaped device 0 from the tubular member 0, as will be readily understood. Vith the form of construction of the frame herein shown and described, it will be seen that a pillow sham f, indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 3, may be suspended from the frame a by passing headed pins 7' indicated in dotted lines in said figure through said sham and into the part a of cork or similar material. It will be noted that the sham due to the curvature a of the separate parts of the fran'ie will have a finished bolster appearance at the top, and by means of the body part a of cardboard or similar material, said shams will be supported in a smooth and unbroken manner, as will be readily understood. It is not absolutely necessary, however, to eX- tend said body a the full height of the separate parts as said body may extend from the cross head member a of each of the frames to approximately one-third the full width thereof, or to cover the curvature a in said separate parts.
The side portions of the parts 0L2-0;3 of the frame opposite the adjacent sides thereof are provided with side closure strips 9 of fabric similar to that of the covering 2) of the separate parts, and the object of these strips is to inclose the opening at the sides thereof formed by the curvature a in the frame a so that the pillows therein may not be seen and to produce a neat appearance, said strips being shown or indicated in Fi s. 2 and 3 of the drawing.
'Vhile I have described my invention as a pillow sham holder, it will be understood that the invention herein shown and described is constructed along the lines of a bolster, the only difference being the general form thereof, as the cardboard or fibrous body a forms a more or less rigid backing for the pillow sham or other drapery as in bolster rolls and the like. It will be understood that while I have shown certain details of construction for carrying my invention into effect, various changes in and modifications of these details may be made, within the scope of the appended claims, without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A pillow sham holder, comprising. a frame composed of two similar, rectangular and detachably connected parts, the top portion of each of said parts being curved backwardly, said parts being provided with body portions and fabric coverings, means for attaching said parts together to form a complete frame, the sides of which are provided with strips which are adapted to inclose said sides of the frame, and means for locking the separate'parts of the frame together when attached.
2. A pillow sham holder comprising a frame composed of two similar, rectangular and detachably connected parts, the top portion of each of said parts being curved backwardly, said parts being provided with. body portions and fibrous coverings, a spring catch device mounted on the top portion of one of the separate parts of the frame and adapted to be detachably connected with the other part of said frame and other interlocking devices mounted on the 9 abutting side portions of said parts which in combination with said spring catch device serve to detachably connect the separate parts of the frame.
3. A pillow sham holder comprising a frame composed of two similar rectangular and detachably connected parts, said parts being each composed of a part of heavy wire bent into U-shaped form and the free ends of which are connected by cross head mem bers, the free end portions of the U-shaped parts being curved backwardly to give the frame a bolster shape, body portions mounted in and secured to the U-shaped parts of said frame and the top portions of which are curved to conform with the curvature of the top portions of said U-shaped parts, fabric coverings mounted on and adapted to entirely inclose the separate parts of the frame and said body portions, and means 11C for attaching and securing the separate p rts of the frame together.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in presence of the subscribing witnesses this 5th day of June, 1919.
ANNA GUTH,
\Vitnesses C. E. MULREANY, H. E. THOMPSON.
