To all whomit may concern.
Be it known that 1, JAMES C. ARMoR, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Pittsiield, in the county of Berkshire and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and Improved Jar-Opener, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to improvements in jar openers, an object of the invention being to provide an improved construction of clamp and operating device therefor which causes the effectual release of a cover from the jar no matter how tightly it may be adhering to its gasket.
A further object is to provide a device'of the character stated in which the clamping member is made with an improved shield, against which the movable jaw of the operating device is adapted to contact and prevent possibility of breaking the neck of the ar.
This invention is especially adapted for use in removing jar covers of the spring top type, in other words, those that have covers or tops which are held down upon the gasket by some elastic or other holding means.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, combinations and arrange ments of parts, as will be more fully hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.

This improved device comprises two main parts, namely, a clamp A and an operating device B. The clamp A consists of a relatively thin wire 1 or other suitable flexible material, one end of said wire 1 fixed to a clamping member 2 and the other end of the wire fixed to a clamping member 3.
The operating device B comprises two handles A and 5 crossed and pivotally connected by a rivet or other suitable pivot 6 and forming relatively short jaws 7 and 8, as shown. Device B is similar to an ordinary pair of pliers in its general operation, and aw 7 is provided with a headed p n 11 adapted to be positioned in any of the series of slots 10 in the clamping member 2, the
said slots being provided with enlarged ends for the entrance of the headed pin 11, as will be readily understood.
The clamping member 3 comprises a curved strip adapted to fit against the neck of the jar to be opened and this strip is formed at one end with an outwardly projecting tongue 12 to which the jaw S ispivotally connected by a rivet 14. The wire 1 is secured in a perforation 13 in the tongue 12 and in a perforation 9in the clamping member 2.
In operatiomthe wire 1 is located under the cover of the jar to be opened and the clamping member 3 against the neck of the jar. When the handles A and 5 are forced toward each other, the clamping members 2 and 3 will be moved toward each other to force the wire 1 under the jar cover and dislodge the same from its gasket. During this clamping operation the end of the jaw 7 will ride against the face of the clamping mem beer 3 and be held by said clamping member from contact with tie neck of the jar to pre vent liability of breaking the jar. The diameter of the clamp can be modified by positioning the pin 11 in any of the slots 10.
To render the device adjustable I may secure enlargements 15 on the wire 1 as shown in'Figs. 4 and 5. These enlargements may be either round or square shouldered and formed in any way desired. A slot 16 would be provided in member 3 to receive the wire andby reason of the enlargement 15 any desired adjustment might be had to [it any neck of jar or bottle.
Slight changes may be made in the general form and arrangement of the parts described without departing from my invention, and hence I do not limit myself to the preceise details set forth, but consider myself at liberty to make such changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of the appended claims.
I claim:
1. A device of the character described, comprising two clamping members, a clamping wire connecting the clamping members, a pair of handles pivotally connected and forming relatively short jaws and relatively long hand holds, one of said jaws pivotally connected to one clamping member, the other of said jaws adapted to be connected to any of a series of points on the other clamping member, said first mentioned clamping member having a curved surface constituting a shield against which one of the jaws is movable during its operation.
2. A device of the character described, comprising two clamping jaws, one of said jaws curved and forming a shield, a laterally projecting tongue on said shield memher, a wire connected at one end to the V tongue of the shield member andat its other end to the other member, said last-mentioned member having a longitudinal series of slots therein, an operating device comprising a pair of handles pivotally connected and forming relatively short jaws and relatively long hand holds, one of said jaws pivotally connected to the tongue of the shield member, and a headed pin on the'other of said jaws adapted to be located in any of the said slots, said pin-carrying jaw adapted at its free end to contact with the shield member when the device is operated.
