RICHARD I-IOELEMANN; on NEW York; N. Y.-
SAFETY-LATCH Eon PnEssEsf' Specification of eads Patent. 1 a1je t d bet. 1919.
Application filed 31111614, 1 16. fsenalfno. ioacse.
To all whom it may concermi i I Be it known that I, RICHARD HQELEMANN, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of New York, county of Queens, and
State of New York, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety- Latches for Presses, of which the following is a specification. I
My lnventlon relates in general to a safety device for use in connection with a clutch 7 mechanism'and while the invention is applicable to any mechanism where it is desired to limit the duration of the active operation of the clutch, the invention particularly relates to a safety. attachment for punch presses and similar machinery where it is desired that the clutch be moved into active position for one operation of. the machine and stopped automatically atthe end of its desired period of operation.
In power presses it is usual for theoperator to inaugurate the actuation of the machine by pressing upon a foottreadle or similar starting device and one of the objects of theinvention is toprovide, a simple, durable, and reliable safety mechanism designed to constitute an attachment to conventional forms of such machines and which will positively move the clutch mechanism into inoperative position-at the termination 'of one actuation of the machine and independently of the position of the treadle or manual control mechanism.
Incidental to an object of simplicity in design it. is a further desideratum' of this invention to provide a device of the class described with the least possible number of.
parts and which may be constructed with a minimum amount of machining, so as to provide a construction which can be mar keted at low cost.
ceptible of being installed on conventional forms of press machines, but which is de-- sired, may be readily removed for replace ment or repalr wlthout interrupting the con- 7 tinuous operation of the machine during the period when the safety device is removed.
Still another object of the invention is to provide a safety device in the form of an attachment, which may be made of; some standard form and provided with means for readily adjusting the same to fit different makes of machine.
Various other. objects and advantages of I theinvention be in part obvious" from an inspection of the accompanying draw- I v a, ings and in part will be more fully set forth in the following particular description of one form of mechanism embodying my invention, and" the invention also consists in certaininew and novel features of construction and combination of parts, hereinafter set forth and claimed. i
Referring to the accompanying drawings: Figure l is a view in side elevation of a portion of a power press showing a form of clutch mechanism used With such machines and shown in looking position and showing a preferred embodiment of my invention in normal inoperative position thereon with parts thereof broken away to show internal construction; Y w I Fig. 2 isa transversesectional View taken on'thebroken line 2-2 of Fig. 1;' and Fig. 3 is a view in side elevation of certain of'theparts shown'in 'Fig. 1, showing the safety attachment in active clutch locking position. Y I a c In the following description and in the claims, parts will be identified by specific i names for convenienceof expression but they are intended to be as generic in their application to similar parts as the art-will permit. v
In the drawings there isshown a clutch I wheel 4 loosely mounted upon the crank? shaft 5 and a clutch member 6 including the projecting rocker arm 7, normally moved into clutching position by the rocker arm spring 8 as is usual with one well known.
type .of clutch mechanism. It is usual in such machines to hold the; rocker arm in its unclutched or inoperative position by means ofa trip dog 9 pivotally mounted upon a pivot bolt 10. carried in a bracket 11 and Another object .of the invention is to provide a safety device which is not only susclude, a relatively strong treadle rod spring l3gde'signed to move the trip dog into its locking positionjdisposed across the path of movement of the rocker arm when pressure is released on the treadle red. It is to be understood that the construction so far described is well known and the l. invention hereinafter described particularly relates to an attachment designed to be mounted upon the pivot bolt 10 which is elongated to accommodate the attachment.
The attachment include s a rocker frames 14, the upper end of which is provided with a projecting finger 15 constituting a stop similar to the usual trip dog and designed, when the rocker arm is in its normal position held by the trip dog, to bear against the side of the rocker arm so that normally the rocker arm constitutes a stop for maintaining the projecting finger 15 in an inoperative position as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The rocking frame includes a depending tail 16, threaded'through which is a setscrew 17, locked in position by the lock nut 18 and designed'to bear against some sultable stop 19, which, in the device disclosed, may be some fixed part of the machine. The rocking frame also includes a kicking device 20 positioned above the bolt 10 for the purpose of mov-i v the finger 15 into active position when i e leased by the rocking arm. This kicking device includes a plunger 21 slidably mounted in a spring casing 22 demountably aflixed to the rocking frame preferably by screws 23 to permit the ready separation of the plunger and its coacting parts for the purpose of repair or substitution for another kicking device. The plunger is maintained normally in projected position toward the stop 19 by means of a spring 2% housed within the casing 22 but obviously having a tension less than the tension of the treadle rod spring 13." The plunger is de signed to be set in adjusted position by lock nuts 25 engaging the rear threaded end 26 of the plunger which projects rearwardly from the casing 22.
The tension of the treadle rod spring 13 is transmitted to the rocking frame through an adjustable stop 27, in the form of a set screw locked in adjusted position in a rearward eX- tenslon 29 from the portion of the locking frame above its fulcrum; This set screw is disposed in the path of the upward movement of the treadle rod, so that as tension is released on the treadle rod, the spring in resetting the dog in the position shown in Fig. 1, will bear on the set screw 27 to move the rocking frame from the position shown in Fig. 3 into the upright position shown in Fig. 1. r 3
In operation, it willbe understood that the clutch wheel t'is rotating continuously and that when it is desired to actuate the crank-shaft 5, the operator depresses the treadle rod, thus swinging the trip dog from the position shown in Fig. 1 into the position shown in Fig. 3, thus removing the dog from the path of movement of the rocker arm and at the same time placing the heavy treadle rod spring under tension, all as is usual with well known devices of this character. I V
The removal of therocker'arm from the path of swinging movement of the project- 111g finger 15 will permit the spring 24 to act on the plunger bearing against the stop 19 and thus re-act on the rocker frame to move the same into the set position shown in Fig. 3' or until the end of the set screw 17 comes in contact with its stop 19. This set screw has previously been so adjusted that the projecting finger 15 is now disposed in. the path of movement of the rocker arm so I that as the rocker arm rotates about in its shaft clutching position, it will now come in contact with the projecting finger disposed in its path with the result that the rocker arm is rocked against the tension of its holding spring and the clutch wheel thus automatically disconnected from the crankshaft. It will be noted that this automatic unclutching by the auxiliary stop finger 15 will take place independent of the position on the treadle rod, so that the operator by pressing on the treadle will cause but one actuation of the crank-shaft and the second stop 15 will automatically causethe clutch to be moved into inoperative position at the end of one rotation of the crank-shaft. By adjusting the set-screw 17 the attachment may beheld in inoperative position which will not affect the usual operation of the machine. 1
Releasing tension on the treadle rod will cause the heavy spring 13 to act on the trip dog moving the same back into its operative position and acting through the set screw 27 on the rocker frame to move the same into its normal position'shown in Fig. 1'.
At the same time the plunger spring 2 1 is placed under compression by the depression of the plunger bearing on the stop 19. This action removes the projecting finger 15 from the path of movement of the rocker arm and permits the rocker arm to move slightly into position stopped by the trip dog and the device is in position for a repetition of the actuation of the machine.
, By means of a device of this character it is possible to install a safety device on conventional forms of press machines merely by substituting a longer bolt for the bolts usually used to. piv'otally support the trip dog. These safety devicesmay be sold as simple articles of manufacture and utilized as attachments to the several difi'erent forms of machines, as desired. With the different but the several set screws carried by the attachment may be adjusted to fit any particular machlne. The attachment may be readily removed and the machine actuated as usual without a safety device and the fact that the conventional forms of machines, need not be modified 111 any way to receive the safety device constitutes one of the important features of this inventionf While I have shown and described, and
have pointed out in the annexed claims, certain novel features of my invention, it will be understood that various OII11SS1OIlS,'SL1b stitutions and changes in the form and details of the device illustrated and in its means normally acting on said supplemental stop to cause it to be positioned in the path of said revolving arm thereby to intercept its movement. I
