Abstract

241,265. Vanderveld, A. July 14, 1924. Measuring.-In anti-spinning and rebound-check mechanism for machines for measuring lengths of fabric of the type in which the fabric is passed between a measuring roller and a pressure roller, and having a bail-shaped member operated by the fabric and actuating means for arresting the motion of the measuring roller, the bailshaped member engages directly the means which normally hold the measuring roller against rotation. The bail has a horizontal portion, adapted to rest on the fabric, the outer end whereof is turned upwardly and outwardly at an angle so that the fabric may be inserted thereunder. Means are provided in connection with the notching device to hold the roller arresting means out of action upon operation of the notching device. The measuring roller 22, Fig. 1, is secured to a shaft 21, and is located above the throat 20 of the machine. The rear end of the shaft 21 is carried in a bearing on the rear frame plate 8, and the front end is carried in a ball bearing 23 mounted in a housing 24 secured to the front plate 9. A nut 25 engages a threaded part of the shaft 21, and operates mechanism 26 which, in conjunction with a centrifugal brake 27, serves to stop the mechanism in zero position. The shaft 21 drives through gearing a second shaft 29 on which is mounted a torsion spring 30 which is wound up by the shaft as it turns. The shaft 29, through further gearing drives a third shaft 32 carrying a drum 33. The shaft 32 actuates the indicating mechanism, which includes a wheel 34, hands 35, 36 and rollers carrying a chart. Below the roller 22 is a presser roller 48, mounted on a shaft carried by a frame 50 which is pivoted and spring controlled so as to press upwardly against the roller 22. Operating levers 59, 60, 61, Fig. 4, mounted respectively on concentric sleeves 56, 57 and shaft 58, are located at the side of the machine, the sleeves and shaft passing through a boss 3 integral with the base of the machine. Notching mechanism. The lever 59 carries a blade 62 which co-operates with a fixed blade 63 to notch the fabric on depression of the lever. The sleeve 56 to which the lever 59 is secured carries at its inner end a collar 64, Fig. 9, to which is secured a spring 65 tending to raise the lever 59. A trough shaped member 70, having an extended arm 69a, is pivoted on a fixed rod 67, and the front end of one side of the member 70 engages normally in a recess 66 in the collar 64, so that when the lever 59 is depressed the arm 69a is raised. Brake and throat lock. The. sleeve 57, Fig. 10, to which the lever 60 is secured, carries at its inner end a cam 71 adapted on depression of the lever 60 to move a spring brake member 73 into contact with the roller 22. The lever 60 remains depressed owing to the friction of the cam 71 against the brake 73. A throat lock member 74 is loosely mounted on the sleeve 57, and a lug 76 extending laterally therefrom is received in a recess 72 in the cam 71. On depression of the lever 60 the throat lock 74 falls by gravity, blocking the entrance to the throat 20, and on raising the lever 60, the throat lock is raised until the lug 76 abuts against a stop 77. Separating rollers. The shaft 58, operated by the lever 61, carries at its inner end a cam 79, Fig. 5. A lever 80, actuated by the cam 79 serves to lower the presser roller on depression of the lever 61 owing to the engagement of the end of the lever 80 under a lug on the frame 51 carrying the presser roller. The lever 61 is held in depressed position by the engagement of the lower side of the cam 79 against the end of the lever 80. Anti-spinning mechanism. Over the bearing housing 24, Fig. 11, of the measuring roller 22 is located a roller clutch consisting of a cage 82 carrying two rollers 84 mounted in slots. Opposite sides of the housing 24 are flattened, and the rollers 84 are located between the flats and the inner surface of the roller 22. A member 85 is secured to the roller cage 82, and a spring 87 tends to rotate the cage so as to wedge the rollers between the flats and the inner surface of the roller 22. An arm 88 projects from the member 85 and is formed with a forwardly extending lug 89 and a rearwardly extending lug 91, the latter being located directly over the end of the arm 69a. Zeroizing. The arm 69<a> of the member 70, Fig. 9, which is actuated by the notching lever 59, carries a pivoted pawl 94 adapted, when the cam 79 is rotated by depression of the lever 61 and the lever 59 is also depressed to free the arm 69<a> to fall, to engage the part 79<a> of the cam 79 and so hold the arm 69a in raised position. The forward end of the latter then engages the lug 91 of the arm 88 and holds the roller clutch cage in such position that the roller 22 is free to rotate in zeroizing the Indicating mechanism. Release of the lever 61 allows the presser roller to move towards the measuring roller, and turns the cam 79 so as to release the pawl 94 and allow the arm 69a to drop. Operating anti-spinning mechanism. A bail member is pivotally mounted to extend across the throat 20, Fig. 11, of the machine and to be elevated by the fabric passing through the machine. The bail comprises a horizontal part which is adapted to rest on the fabric and which when no fabric is present passes downwardly through a slot 19 in the table 16. At the front end this part is turned upwardly and outwardly at an angle so as to facilitate the insertion of the fabric. The arm 100 of the bail is flattened and pivoted at 101, the other arm being similarly pivoted. The arm 100 engages the lug 89 on the arm 88 of the roller clutch cage. Rebound check mechanism. A rebound check member comprising a cross bar 105, Fig. 11, adapted to lie against the presser roller 48 is mounted by means of arms 106 extending from the bar 105 on a rod 52 secured between the sides of the presser roller frame 51. One arm 106 has an upward projection 107 with a notch 108 in which the horizontal part of the bail engages when the bail drops. On upward movement of the bail the horizontal part rides against the face of the projection 107 and holds the cross bar 105 away from the presser roller. Specification 204,739 is referred to.
