PETER G; JACOBSN, 0F CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
RAZOR-BLADE HOLDER.
Application led February 8, 191'?, Serial N0. 147,291.
To all 'whom t may concern.'
Y Be it known that I, PETER G. JAooBsoN, citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, inthe county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Razor-Blade Holders, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description.
My invention relates to razor blade holdersA and is of particular service in the formation of holders to be used in holding the blades that are to be honed, though the invention is not to be limited to this use.
My invention has for one of its objects the provision of improved means for limiting` the extent to which the blade holding clamp may swing with reference to the handleV carrying it. I employ a motion limiting connection engaging both the handle and the clamp. y
My invention has for another of its objects the provision of improved mechanism for forcing the jaws of the blade holding clamp into engagement with the blade to be held thereby and to this end I employV transverse continuations upon the aws and means acting upon rthese continuations for the purpose stated.
rI will explain my invention more fully by reference to the accompanying drawing showing` the preferred embodiment thereof and in which Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of a razor blade holder as I preferably make it; Fig. 2 is a plan view; Fig. 3 is a view on line 3-3 of Fig. 2; Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 3 but with the jaws of the blade holding clamp open; Fig. 5 is a view on line 5 5 of Fig. 3; Fig. 6 is a view on line 6-6 of Fig. 4; and Fig. 7 is a view on line 7-7 of Fig. 5.
Like parts are indicated by similar characters of reference throughout the different figures.
The blade holder includes one member in the form'of a blade holding clamp having jaws 1, 1 and a second member in the form of a handle 2 upon which the clamp is mounted between its front blade holding end and its rear end to swing upon the handle. The handle has forked branches 3 carrying a clamp supporting rod at their forward ends. This rod is preferably of sectional formation, its parts being a sleeve 4 and trunnion screws 5 and 6 entering the bore of the sleeve and in threaded connection with the ends thereof. Each of the Specification of Letters Patent.
Renewed March 6, 1919. Serial No. 281,072.
jaws has transverse continuations 7, vthe transverse continuations upon one jaw being vand'handle are assembled and the Vclamp may swing upon the handle at a point between the forward' andfrear ends of the clamp. j
The rear ends of the clamp jaws are pivotally united by a shaft 8 passing therethrough and which shaft `'carries a roller 9 for supporting the clamp in properV position upon the hone. The extent to which the clamp may swing upon the handle is limited byfthe connections 10 that are continuations of the shaft 8 and whose outer ends have lost motion engagement with the handle parts 3, preferably by operating in slots 11. l/Vhen this construction is adopted, the shaft 8 is desirably made inf two parts as indicated in Fig. 5.
The openings in the jaw continuations through which the trunnion vscrews 5 pass are preferably in the form of slots extending longitudinally o-f the clamp and along which said screws may be moved bodily and longitudinally with reference to the clamp. This may lbe done by holding the clamp in one hand and the handleV in the other and moving the clamp toward or away from the handle. When the clamp is pulled out as far as possible, the screws are at the rear of the slots (Fig. 4) and rthese .slots are then most out of register and the jaws of the clamp are then farthest apart to permit of the insertion of a blade 12. When the screws are forced to the front ends of the slots, the slots are brought more into register and the jaws are consequently forced together (Fig. L3) to grip the inserted blade 12. The front end of one of the slots is continued laterally of the slot in one direction and the front end of the other slot is continued laterally inV an opposite direction whereby 'a locking formation is produced to hold the shaft when the blade is clamped, the shaft being prevented from working backward. The rear ends of the slots may be similarly curled to cause the shaft to lbe held when the jaws are separated but such formation of the rear ends of the slots is not essential. The jaws are resilient and are therefore firmly applied to the blade. Claims relating to the jaws and the means co-a-cting therewith for forcing theV jaws together are made in a divisionof this application, the divisional application having been iiled March 28, 1918, under Serial No'. 225,230.
While I have herein shown and particul'arly described the preferred embodiment of my invention I donot wish to be limited to the precise details of construction shown as changes may readily be made without departing from the spirit of my invention,
but having thus described my invention I v claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent the following 1. A safety razor blade holder including a clampv that is adapted to hold a razor blade at its front end; a handle upon which the clamp is mounted between its front blade holding end and its rear end to swing upon the handle; and a motion limiting connection movable withV respect to and engaging bothrthe Vhandle land the. part of the clamp to lthe rear of its mounting to limit the swinging movement of the clamp with respect to the handle.
2. A safety razor blade holder including one member in the form of a clamp that is adapted to hold a razor blade at its front end; a second member in the form of av handle upon which the clamp is mounted between its fro-nt blade holding end and its v rear end to swing upon the handle; and
Copies of this patent may be obtained for a motion limiting connection between the handle and the part of the clamp to the rear of its mounting vand carried by one of said members and engagealble with the other member and having lost motion with respect thereto, whereby swinging movement of the clampwith respect to'the` handle is permitted and limited. y
3. A safetyrazor blade holder'including a clamp that is adapted to hold a razor blade at front end; a handle upon which the clamp is mounted between its front blade holding end and its rear kend to swing upon the handle; and a moti-on limiting connection carried by the clamp andV engageable with the handle and having lost motion with respect thereto whereby swinging movement of the clamp with respect to the handle is Ypermitted and limited.
4:. `A safetyrazor blade `holderY.including a clamp that is adapted to holda razor blade at its front end; a handle upon which the clamp is mounted between its front blade PETER e. JAooBsoN. l
