Description

1 ail whom it away concern:

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
cnamins n. sAYnoa, or BALTIMORE, MARYLAND.
. PIPE-CUTTER.
Be it known that 1, CHARLES R. SAYLOR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Baltimore, L'Etate. of Maryland, have invented new and useful Improvements in Pipe-Cutters, of which thefoilowing is a specification.
' One-object of my present invention is the provision of a simple, strong ancteasily manufactured device adapted to be expeditiously "and easily converted from an eflicient pipe wrench to an equally efiicient pipe cutter and vice versa.
Another object of the invention is the provision of an advantageous combination susceptible of use in either a pipe wrench or a pipe cutter.
To the attainment of the foregoing the invention consists in the improvement as hereinafter described and definitely claimed.
in the accompanying drawings, hereby made a part hereof Figure 1 is a side elevation of my novel device.
Fig. 2 is an elevation at right angles to Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged section taken in the plane indicated by the line 3*?) of Fig.
1 and showing the adjustable centering means in idle position.
Fig. 4 is a perspective of the draw-bar comprised in my improvement.
. Similar numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in all of the views of the drawings.
My novel device comprises among other elements a handle 1 in one edge of which is housed and guided a rectilinearly movable draw-bar 2. The said draw-bar 2 is longitudinally slotted at 3 to receive connecting rivets 4, is provided at one end with an arm 5, preferably hook-shaped, and is provided at its opposite end with a threaded stem 6, the latter to receive a nut 7 which abuts against the rear end of the handle and is adapted when turned to move the draw-bar 2 longitudinally in one direction or the other. .At the inner end of the handle 1 and integral therewith is provided a head 8, and by preference a jaw 9, of tool steel, is detachably connected at 10 to said head. Pivoted at 11 to one end of the head 8 is one end of a yoke 12, the other end of which is equipped with a pivoted bail 13, adapted to be engaged with and disengaged from the arm 5 of the draw-bar 2. The yoke 12 is disposed between the said walls 15.
,l the 'trunnions ,when the wheels 1? their outer idle positions. It will be readily Specification ofLetters Patent. Patented Nov. so, 1920. Application filed my 22.1920. yseriarivo. 383,411.
" provided at 14in its parallel walls. 15 with angular-slots, and in the said slots are arranged and adjustable the trunnions 16 of cutting wheels 17, the said wheels 17 being (lonnectedto one of the walls 15 andarranged to cooperate with adjacent trunnions 16 are receive are in spring arms18, having seats 19. to
understood that when the wheels 1'? are in their outer positions they will be yieldingly retained in said positions by the spring arms 18 and will not interfere in any measure with the use of the device'as an eflicient pipe wrench. When, however, the wheels are moved inwardly until the springs are seated in the inner portions of the slots 14, the wheels will be yieldingly retained in the said positions by the spring arms 18 and will be strongly supported by the side walls 15 incidental to the use of the device as a pipe cutter. v
Housed in and projecting from one side of the handle 1 are spring backed detents 20 and 20, and fixed to a rock shaft 21 journaled in the handle 1 are the members 22 and 23 of the adjustable centering means comprised in my invention and designed for use when the device is converted into a pipe cutter. The free ends of the members 22 and 23 are recessed at 24 and the member 23 is provided in its inner side at 25 with indentures to receive one or the other of the detents 20 and 20?. By the inner detent 20 the centering means is detachably secured in its idle position, Figs. 1 and 3, and by the detent 20 the said centering means is secured in its working position to accurately position a. pipe relatively to the wheels 17 for the proper and expeditious cutting of the pipe.
When my novel device is used as a pipe cutter the jaw 9 may be left in place or may be altogether omitted without affecting my invention.
In the practical use of my novel device it will be observed that the yoke 12 may be quickly thrown about a pipe, and the bail 13 may as readily be engaged with the hook arm 5 of the draw-bar 2 after which by manipulation of the nut 7, which is preferably provided with a handle 7*, the yoke may be powerfully moved to clamp the pipe hereinbefore alluded to.
claim and desire to Having described my invention, what I secure by Letters- Patent, is
1. A pipe cutter comprising a yoke having slots with inner longitudinally directed VV ing slots with inner longitudinally directed portions therein, cutting wheels having portions adjustable in said slots, and spring arms carried by the'yoke cooperating with said portions of the cuttlng wheels to retain the portions in the extremities of the slots;
said'spring arms having seats to receive the cutting wheel portions when the same; are in the outer extremities of theslots.
3. A pipe cutter comprising 'a handle with a head atoneend,-a longitudinally adjustable draw-bar connected with the handle and having achook arm at one end and a threaded portion at its opposite end, .a nut mounted on the said threaded portion and arranged to abut against the handle,
. swinging centering members pivotally conpivotally connected to one end of the head on the handle, a bail pivotally connected to the other end of the yoke and arranged for cooperation with the arm of the draw-bar, and cutting wheels carried by and adjustable in the'yoke and spring-pressed to retain them yieldingly in working position and idle position, respectively; q In testimony whereof I affix my signature. CHARLES R. SAYLOR.
