THE COLUMBIA PLANOGRAPH cm. WASHINGTON, D. c.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFIG.
KATHERINE KURTZ, or BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.-
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, KATHERINE KURTZ, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the borough of Brooklyn, in the city and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Linings for Hats, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to linings for hats, and has for one of its principal objects to provide such a lining which may be easily and cheaply manufactured, which shall be neat and pleasing in appearance, and which shall be so constructed that ready access may be gained when desired to the interior of the hat, for retrimming or any other purpose.
The invention consists in the novel con, struction, arrangement, and combination of various elements and parts, as shown in the accompanying drawings and hereinafter more particularly described.
In the said drawings, Figure 1 is a view of a side crown forming a part of my improved lining; Fig. 2 is a'side view of a tip adapted to be used therewith; and Fig. 8 is a plan View of the tip shown in Fig. 2.
In carrying my invention into effect in the embodiment thereof which I have selected for illustration and description in this application, I provide a side crown comprising a strip of fabric or the like 11, (see Fig. 1) the lower edge of which strip 11, designated 14:, is turned upward and stitched to the main portion thereof, to form a tube adapted to contain a drawstring 13. 'The portion 12 of the side crown is adapted to be stitched to the bottom of the inside of the crown of a hat, the length being adjusted thereto by means of the drawstring 13. It will be obvious that the tube in which the drawstring 13 runs may be formed in any other suitable manner than the one described; such, for instance, as by securing a second strip of fabric to the strip 11 by means of a row of stitches on each side of said drawstring 13 or in any other suitable manner. At the top of the side crown I provide a second drawstring 15, inclosed in a tube formed by securing a strip of fabric to the 11 by a has stitches LININ G FOR HATS.

17 on each side of the drawstring 15. It will be obvious, however, that the tube inclosing this drawstring may be formed in any other suitable manner; such as, for instance, as shown at the bottom of the side crown 11.
For use in combination with this side crown I provide a tip comprising a central circular or elliptical portion 18 of metal, celluloid, cardboard, or other relatively stiif material, to the sides of which are secured disks 19 and 20, of similar material, adapted in combination with the said central portion to form a tip provided with a peripheral groove adapted to receive the upper edge of the side crown 11. The tip may be either wholly or partly covered with fabric, if desired.
In the operation of this embodiment of my invention, the side crown 11 being stitched in place in a hat after proper adjustment of the drawstring 13, the upper edge of the side crown is brought into the peripheral groove of the tip, and the drawstring 15 tightly drawn and suitably secured. A lining is thus formed which completely covers the interior of the crown of the hat, but access to this interior may be readily obtained at any time for retrimming or any other purpose, by the temporary removal of the tip.
The advantages of my invention will be obvious from what has been above set forth concerning its construction and mode of operation. I do not limit myself to the exact construction shown and described, as it will be evident that various modifications might be made therein, without departing from portions secured thereto and adapted to form therewith a peripheral groove adapted to be engaged by said securing means.
3. A tip for a hat lining, composed of in- 5 flexible material and having a peripheral groove.
4. A tip for a hat lining, composed of -in flexible material and comprising a central portion and flange portions secured thereto and adapted to form therewith a peripheral groove adapted to engage with means for securing the tip to a hat.
In Witness whereof I have hereunto signed my name this 31st day of October KATHERINE KURTZ.
Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents, Washington, I). G.
