VEIL.
Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ZEALIE VAN RAALTE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Veils, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to provide a veil which can be securely attached to the hat without the use of pins or other like means of attachment; which will not disturb the trimming on the hat in any manner when placed on the hat or removed and which may be readily adjusted in many ways to secure various results and draping arrangements.
A further object of this invention is to provide a veil Which may be used in many different ways to secure various results and arrangements in design and use.
These and various other improvements are carried out by my invention, a more particular description of which appears be- Referring to the drawings appended hereto,
Figure 1 is a plan view of my improved veil; 4
Fig. 2 is a sectional view on the line 22 of Fig. 1, looking in the direction of the arrows, and
Fig. 3 is a side elevation showing the manner in which my improved veil may be used.
In the preferred embodiment of my invention as shown in the accompanying drawing, 1 indicates the main portion or body portion of the veil. This body portion consists of a flat section of material, preferably any meshed fabric and it may be of any desired outline and suitably ornamented.
Arranged at any desired point in the body portion 1 is an opening 2. Secured to the edge of this opening 2 is a stripof elastic material 3.
Situated in proximity to the hat opening 2 is a face opening 4. A section of veiling 5, forming a flap is secured to the body portion 1, by means of a line of stitches 6 extending along its upper edge and securing its upper edge to the body portion at a point situated intermediate the openings 2 and 4.
The front flap 5 is shown to be smaller than the body portion 1 and square in outline. This front flap 5, however,.may be of any desired configuration, size, ornamentation or coloring to suit various requirements or desires.
From the foregoing, my invention will be readily understood. To place the veil upon the hat it is merely necessary to enlarge the opening 2 by means of the elastic 3 surrounding said opening, and pass the crown of the hat through said opening, so that the veiling will be arranged on the hat as shown in Fig. 3, the contraction of the elastic strip 3 holding the veil securely on the hat.
V hen the veil is properly placed in position, it will be found that the face opening 4 is in a proper position to register with the face. The front flap 5 may be used in several ways. If the face is to be left uncovered the front flap 5 may be thrown back over the top of the hat as indicated by A, or if desired the flap 5 may be allowed to hang downwardly in front of the face opening 4, as indicated by B. The flap 5 can also be inserted through the face opening 4 so that the body portion 1 will be on the outside of the flap.
It will thus be seen that various combinations and arrangements can be secured by my improved veil.
Having described one embodiment of my invention it is obvious that my invention is not to be restricted thereto, but is broad enough to cover all structures coming within the scope of the annexed claims.
What I claim is:
1. An article of the class described, having a hat opening, elastic means for contracting said opening, a face opening and a movable flap adapted to cover said face opening.
2. An article of the class described comprising a body portion having a hat opening therein, an elastic strip surrounding said opening, said body portion having a face opening and a movable fiap having one of its edges secured between the hat opening and the face opening.
3. An article of the class described comprising a body portion having a hat opening therein and a face opening adjacent the hat opening, and a movable flap having its upper edge secured to said body portlon intermediate said openings.
4. An article of the class described comprising a body portion having an opening, an elastic strip surrounding said opening, said body portion having a face opening situated adjacent said first mentioned opening, and a movable face covering flap adapted to cover said face opening, having its upper edge secured on a line intermediate the openings.
5. An article of the class described, having a body portion, a hat openin in said body portion entirely surrounded by the New York, this 14th day of January, 1918. i5
ZEALIE'VAN RAALTE.
Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents, Washington, D. 0.
