W /6 MM ,4 T TOR/VI) UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAN K. WIEROUSKI OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
TILEFORMING MACHINE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known thatI, J AN KpVVninousin, a citizen of the United States, residin at Chicago, in the county of Cook and btate of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tile-Forming Machines, of which the following is a specilication.
This invention relates to improvements in tile forming machines and its object is to provide mean for readily forming roofing tile from cement. A further object is to provide a machine of this type that is of simple construction and that is readily operated by one man. A further object is to provide a machine adapted primarily for forming tile with transverse ribs at each end but upon opposite sides of the body of the tile. With the foregoing and other objects in view the invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter fully described, pointed out in the appended claim and illustrated in the accoupanying drawings which form a part of this specification and in which Figure l is a perspective view of my improved machine in use.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged fragmentary view of a rib forming member.
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view through the machine clearly showing how the tile ribs are formed.
Fig. 4 is a plan view of the trowel employed.
Fig. 5 is a view of Fig. 4. in side elevation.
Fig. 6 is an end view of Fig. 5.
Fig. 7 isa perspective view of the box frame.
Fig. 8 is a plan view of a tile.
Fig. 9 is a cross section taken on line 9-9 of Fig. 8.
Fig. 10 is an edge view of Fig. 8.
Fig. 11 is a fragmentary perspective view of the head block.
Like reference characters denote corresponding parts throughout the several views.
My tile forming machine comprises the bench or table 1 formed with the upstanding edge 2 and with the front sill 3. To the table 1 I secure a box frame 4 by the screws 5,- said box frame receiving the table block 6 upon which a plate 7 formed with perforation 7 is removably disposed, said plate being formed at one end with the parallel transverse channels 8, 9 the formation of which produces the spacer rib 10, said chan Specification ofLetters Patent. Patnted Sept. 1919, Application filed. February 1,1918. Serial No. 214,913.
nels 8, 9 having disposed therein the ribs and with the lateral rib S The plungers or pins 11, four in number, extend through alined perforations in the table 1 and block 6 for engagement with the said plate 7, said pins 11 being carried by the reciprocating plate 12 which is arranged upon and operable by the stem 13 connected by link 14 to the pedal .15 fulcrumed upon the said sill 3.
Tothe sides of the box frame 4: I secure the rails 16 which extend beyond the box frame and over the rear edge 2 of the table and'to the outer or free ends of which the arms 17 are hinged that carry the head block 18, said head block being formed with the parallel transverse slots 19 to receive the transverse tongues 20 formed upon the tamping block 21 which is carried by the arms 22 that are hinged to the said head block, said head block being also formed with the longitudinal depression 19.
The tile forming cement is poured into the box frame 4 upon the plate 7, a wire stem 7 is then introduced through the perforation 7 into the cement, said stem serving as a handle forthe tile when finished. Some of the cement will run into the channels 8, 9 of said late, as well as into grooves 8', 8, 8 8 and so form ribs A in the tile 22 while ribs '8, 9, 8 will form channels B in the tile. I now plane or trowel the cement mass with a hand trowel which comprises the trowel bar 28 to which the handles 24:, 24 are connected by the plates 25, said plates and handles having secured thereto by rivets 26 the angle pieces or guides 27 adapted for lateral engagement with the said rails 16. Springs 28 carried by the plates 25 are adapted to ride upon the rails 16 as the trowel is moved back and forth over the cement mass to level the same. The operator standing in front of the machine grasps the handle 24 and so placing the trowel upon the box frame that the springs 28 and guides 27 engage with the rails 16 as previously described levels or trowels the cement mass as desired. The trowel is now removed and the head block 18 moved down upon the box frame. Some more cement is poured through the slots 19 therein and the tamping block 21 then pressed firmly upon the head block, this operation being necessary ralityvof ribs 29 adjacent its slots 19, the outer rib 29 resting uponthe front ed e of the box frame in one position of said ead block, the purpose of said ribs 29beingto pre- ,vent spreading ofthe cement poured through the slots 19. After the operation of forming a tile just described is completed the tile is permitted to stand awhile to harden and then the plate is raised off the block 6 by manipulationof the pedal 15 and said block is then manually removed from the machine and a new plate placed upon, said block 6 and the tile forming operation repeated. A
guide is provided upon the head block 18 at-one end of slots 19. I What is claimed is A tile forming machine including a table,
a box thereon, a block in the box, a forming late in the box and adapted to rest on the block, means to raise said plate, rails secured to the sides of the box, arms hingedly carried by said rails, a head block carried on said arms and adapted to swin down on said box, said head block having spaced slots at one end with ribs formed beneath and at the sides of the slots, said head block also having transverse ton ues on the underside thereof, a tamping b ock hingedly carried by said head block and having ribs adapted to enter the slots in said head block whereby to tamp the cement therewithin.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto aflixed my signature in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JAN K. WIEROUSKI.
