' SAFETY errnc'iririnnrronoIGAR-cU'rTERe To all whom it may Concern.
Be it known that I, EDWARD WV. CARROLL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Weston, in the county of Lewis and State of WVest Virginia, have invented a new and useful Safety Attachment for Cigar-Gutters, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to an attachment for cigar cutters, and is designed as a guard and guide, having the dual function of preventing the fingers of the hand from being inserted into the cutter, and of guiding the cigar properly into the cutter.
It is the object of the invention to provide a device of the nature indicated, which is extremely simple and inexpensive in construction, being composed of one piece, which can be readily attached to various cigar cutters, and which will effectively serve its oflice. The present device not only serves to guide the tip of the cigar properly into the cutter to cut the tip off, but also prevents the accidental or thoughtless insertion of the finger or thumb into the cutter. The device is in fact so desigrf'd, that it even frustrates the intentional insertion of the finger into the cutter, as well as the accidental insertion.
l/Vith the foregoing and other objects in view, which will be apparent as the nature of the invention is better understood, the invention resides in the provision of an attachment of a construction to successfully accomplish the desired result, it being understood that slight changes in form and details can be made within the scope of what is hereinafter claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention. I I
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein v Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device as applied to a cigar cutter.
Fig. 2 is a diametrical section thereof, showing how the device prevents the insertion of the-finger into the cutter.
The attachment 1 is of horn-shape, being constructed of any suitable material. The smaller end of the device 1 is of an internal diameter slightly larger than the 7 largest diameter of cigars, and thedevice increases in diameter to its other end, the latter end being flared, to provide a mouth of relatively large diameter for the ready insertion of the cigar into the device. The smaller end of the device has an outstanding base i specification of Letters Patent. Patented Aug, 19,1919,

fiangeQ which can be secured by means of screws or other securing elements to the cigar cutter 3, over the hole 4 leading to the cutter blades, shears, or the like, for cutting off the tip of the cigar. The device can be inexpensively manufactured, and when attached to a cigar cutter gives the same an ornate appearance. Furthermore, the device will serve to guide the cigar properly into the opening 4, since the cigar can be readily inserted into the device, and the device will, when the cigar is moved into it, guide the cigar properly into the opening 4. In addition to this function, the device is so formed, that it is impossible to insert the fingers into the cutter, the flared end of the device serving to limit the insertion of the hand, and the device being of such-a size that the finger cannot be inserted beyond the smaller end thereof. The device, therefore, has the dual function of guiding the cigar properlyv into the cutter and of preventing the fingers 4 from being accidentally or thoughtlessly out, as is not infrequently the case with cigar cutters as ordinarily used. Briefly considered, the present invention includes a cigar cutter comprising a body 3 having an opening 4;-and a combined cigarguide and finger-guard 1 of horn shape having its smaller end 6 attached to the body 3 about the opening 4, the end 6 of the guide and guard being of sufiicient diameter to receive a cigar, the aXiallength of the guide and guard being greater than its width across its wider end 7 and the wall of the guide and guard being inwardly concaved, as shown at 8, whereby contact between the bend 9 of a human finger l2 and the'wall of the guide and guard will force the butt 10 of the finger laterally against the wall at the wider end of the guide and guard and stop the advance of the finger, before the finger enters the opening 4. Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is A cigar cutter comprising a body having an opening; and a combined cigar-guide and fingerguard of hornshape having its smaller end attached to the body about the opening; the smaller end of the guide and guard being of sufficient diameter to receive a cigar, the axial length of'the guide and guard being greater than its width across its wider end, and the wall of the guide and guard being inwardly concaved, the dimensions of the guide and, guard beingjsuch my own, I have hereto affixed my signature ic-lhetdthii,l advance1 of one finger of a huglnfin n the presence of two witnesses.
