Application filed May 22, 1918.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH POLIVKA, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Brunswick, in the county of Middlesex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Collars and Attaching Means, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a collar and securing means therefor, and more particularly to a collar of the turn-over type and means whereby the collar may be readily secured to the neck band of the shirt.
One of the main objects of the invention is to provide a collar of simple construction and operation which is provided with securing elements formed integral therewith for attaching the collar to the shirtband.
A further object is to provide a neck band for a shirt provided with spaced slits which receive the securing members of the collar, the collar and the neck band cooperating in such manner as to firmly secure the collar to the band without the requirement of collar buttons and similar members.
A further object is to provide a collar and shirt band of the type stated which may be produced at small cost and may be readily used in connection with a shirt of ordinary construction.
Further objects will appear from the detailed description.
In the drawings:
Figure l is a front perspective view of a collar and neck band constructed in accordance with my invention as applied.
Fig. 2 is an outside View of the collar.
Fig. 3 is an inside View of the collar.
Fig. 4 is an inside view of the collar with the outer flap or fold turned up.
Fig. 5 is an inside view of the neck band.
Fig. 6 is an outside view of the neck band.
Fig. 7 is a transverse section through the neck band.
The collar A is of usual construction being provided with theouter fold B and the inner fold C. The inner fold C is cut to provide, at its lower edge, two oppositely directed, centrally disposed securing tabs 1 and 2, and adjacent each end, the inwardly directed securing tabs 3 and 4. These tabs are all disposed in the plane of the inner flap or fold C. Tabs 1 and 2 are adapted to engage through cooperating slits 1 and 2 which are provided in the outer fold 5 of a Specification of Letters Patent.

neck band 6 of tubular construction which is secured to the shirt D. The tabs 3 and at are adapted to engage through slits 3 and 4? provided in the neck band 6 for this purpose. The slits are so spaced as to properly receive the securing tabs, the tabs projecting into the band or between the inner and outer folds thereof and serving to detachably secure the collar to the band. After the collar has been thus secured, the usual end flaps 7 and 8 may be lapped and inserted between the folds of the collar in the usual manner, the collar when thus secured in position being held against opening by a neck tie of usual type.
As an additional safe guard I provide means whereby the end flaps 7 and 8 of the inner fold C may be secured together thus effectually eliminating danger of opening of the collar at the front thereof, and permitting the collar to be worn with comfort without the necessity of utilizing a tie for securing the same together. For this purpose, I provide the end flap 8 with a downwardly directed slot 9 the lower end portion of which is shaped to provide an arcuate opening 10. This slot cooperates with a similar slot 11 provided in tab or flap 7. In practice, the collar is secured to the neck band 6 of the shirt in the manner described, after which the tabs 7 and 8 are locked together by raising tab 7 and fitting the slot 11 thereof over the lower portion of tab 8, the upper portion of flap 7 fitting into the slot 9 of flap 8. When the end flaps are thus secured together, all danger of becoming accidentally separated so as to permit opening of the collar at the front thereof is effectually eliminated, the collar being thus firmly secured together so as to present a neat appearance and to be worn with comfort. In using this collar and attaching means, the usual button holes in the neck band 6 are omitted, and the top button of the shirt is preferably, though not necessarily, moved up so as to be closely adjacent the collar thus insuring that the shirt will be properly retained in closed condition. By providing this device I eliminate altogether all neces- 'sity of using collar buttons and similar members and the inconvenience incident to the use of these members. In addition, the movement of the tie between the folds of the collar will not be seriously interfered with by the usual button at the back of the neck,
thus permitting the tie to be readily removed as may be required or desired.
The foregoing description and accompanying drawings have reference to what might be considered the preferred or approved form of my invention. I desire it to be understood, that I may make such corrections in the arrangement and combination of parts, materials, dimensions, et cetera, as may prove expedient and fall within the scope of the'claims hereunto appended.
Having thus fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is v 1. A collar, comprising inner and outer folds, the inner fold being of less depth than the outer fold and having its middle and end portions widened, the middle widened portion having slits extending inwardly in line with the lower edge of the fold to form oppositely outwardly extending longitudinal tabs andthe end widened portions having slits' extending outwardly from their inner ends. in line with the lower edge of the fold to form inwardly extending longitudinal tabs, the several tabs being wholly below Copies of this patent may be obtained for the-inner fold and entirely above the lower edge of the outer fold.
2. A collar, comprising inner and outer folds, the inner fold having its ends extended to form flaps in the opposite edges of which are formed transverse slots which are enlarged at their inner ends, and said inner fold having its middle and end portions widened, the middle widened portion having slits extending inwardly in line with the lower edge of the fold to form oppositely outwardly extending longitudinal tabs and the end widened portions having slits extending outwardly from their inner ends in line with the lower edge of the fold to form inwardly extending longitudinal tabs, the
several tabs being wholly below the inner fold and entirely above the lower edge or the outer fold.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
