Description
IVI. LIPPS. COUCH 0R DIVAN. APPLICATION FILED ocT. 4. I`9I7.
Patented May 2?, 1919.
MORRIS LIPPs, or NEW YORK, N. Y.
COUGH R DIVAN.`
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 27, 1919.
Application filed October 4, 1917. Serial No. 194,698.
" To all 'whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, MORRIS LrPPs, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Couches or Divans, of which the following is a speciication.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in couches or divans having head pieces or ends, and one of the objects of the invention is to provide for a detachable connection of the end pieces to the couch or divan. Another object is to provide a new and improved form of back, side or end piece proper which is easily and cheaply manufactured.
Other objects and aims of the invention, more or less broad than those stated above, together with the advantages inherent, will be in part obvious and in part specifically referred to in the course of the following description of the elements, combinations, arrangements of parts, and applications of principles constituting the invention; and the scope of protection contemplated will appear from the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, which are to be taken as part of this specification, and in which I have shown a merely preferred form of embodiment of the invention, Figure 1 is an elevation of a divan embodying my invention and having two end pieces; Fig. 2 is a detailed perspective, partly in section, illustrating the end piece construction and the attachment thereof to the divan.
Referring to the numerals on the drawings, there is shown at 4 a couch or divan having end or head pieces 5. The divan is provided as usual with some form of spring 6, overlaid by a mattress, pad or the like 7. The end rail of the divan indicated by the numeral 8 is provided with a pair of loops or straps 9, into which are received the ends of fiat fingers 10 projecting from a frame 11 which constitutes the skeleton of the end piece or head piece 5. This frame 11 is preferably made up of horizontal bars arranged in parallel, and connected together by transverse strips, two of which transverse strips are simply extended at the lower end of the frame to form the fingers 10. Around this frame 11 is assembled a cushion and cover, and preferably the upper portion of the frame is slightly bent as indicated in Fig. 2.
Inasmuch as many changes could be made in the above construction, and many apparently widely different embodiments of my invention could be made without departing from the scope thereof, it is intended that all matter containedA in the above description or shown in the accompanying drawings shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
It is also to be understood that the language used in the following claims is intended to cover all the generic and specific features of the invention herein Vdescribed and all statements of the scope of the invention which, as a matter of language, might be said to fall therebetween. l
I claim:
1. A device of the kind described comprising a frame made of parallel strips joined by transverse strips, certain of said transverse strips being extended to form projecting fingers, and a cushion and cover member surrounding the frame and having openings through which said fingers project.
2. A device of the kind described comprising a frame made of top and bottom parallel strips joined by transverse strips, certain of said transverse strips being extended to form projecting fingers, and a cushion and cover member, surrounding the frame and having openings through which said fingers project, the upper edge of the top parallel stripbeing OEsetto provide a relative broadened bearing surface around which the cushion extends.
3. A detachable head or end piece for' couches or the like comprising a reinforcing frame having parallel strips joined by transverse strips, certain of said transverse strips being extended to form flat projecting lingers and a cushion and cover member surrounding the frame, said projecting fingers protrudin through the cushion and cover and adapte to enter loops secured to the edge of the couch.
In testimony whereof I afhx my signature.A
MORRIS LIPPS.
