I SAFETY-RAZOR.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WILLIAM F. CARY, acitizen of the United States, and a resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented-a new and Improved Safety-Razor, of which the following is a description.

My invention relates to safety razors and relates more particularly to that type of safety razor in. whichthe blade and guard are separate from each other and separate from the resilient handled clip in which they are held for shaving,

Objects of the invention are to provide a safety razor blade provided with a shank at one end which, when the blade is removed from the resilient clip, may be grasped between the thumb and finger for stropping the blade, or inserted in a tubular holder or handle for stropping, whereby the stropping of the blade may be done after the manner of stropping an ordinary razor.

I Further objects of the invention are to facilitate the assembling and disassembling of the parts; to insure the secure holding of the blade and guard in proper position in the clip; and to provide a safety razor that may be easily and thoroughly cleaned when disassembled.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specifi cation.

Figure 1 is a perspective view of a safety razor embodying my invention, showing the parts assembled;

Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the guard;

Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the blade;

Fig. 5 is an end view of the razor, the guard being shown in transverse section and a portion of the handle being broken away.

In carrying out my invention in practice, a suitable handled clip is provided to receive the guard and blade, there being an elongated handle 10 of known form and carrying at its front end a transverse clip 11, the same being resilient, having open ends and presenting a longitudinal slot- 11 at the front.

13 are adapted to, be inserted in the clip endwise. The guard 13 is formed with a flange 14 at its rear edge which is adapted to overlie the back of the razor blade 12 as clearly shown in Figs. 4 and 5 andbe accommodated with the rear portions of the guard and bladein the clip. Thus, in assembling the parts the blade 12is placed on the guard with its back edge against the flange 14 of the guard and the assembled blade and guard are thus readily insertible endwise in the clip and removed similarly.

I form the blade 12 at one end with a short shank 15 which preferably is hexagonal or having an equivalent non-circular cross section. The said shank is itself adapted to be grasped between the thumb and first finger, whereby a person may strop the blade in the same manner as an ordinary razor. The shank 15 may, if desired, be inserted in the end of a tubular blade holder 16 but for ordinary stropping the shank 15 may be directly I grasped between the finger and thumb. The shank '15 also, it will be observed, presents a shoulder adjacent to the end of the blade 12, whereby to engage the adjacent end of the clip 11 to thereby limit the movement of the assembled blade and guard in the clip.

Having thus described my invention, 1 claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patentz' A safety razor including a resilient clip having open ends and presenting a longitudinal slot at the front, a separate razor blade, a separate guard for the blade, the rear portions of said blade and guard jointly being slidable endwise' inthe clip, said guard having a flange on the back edge thereof adapted to overlie the back of the blade and accommodated with the rear portions of the blade and guard in said clip, and a short shank on the blade at one end near the rear edge adapted to be gripped between the thumb and finger for stropping, or to be inserted in a tubular holder, said shank presenting a shoulder adjacent to the blade to limit the sliding of the blade and guard-
