To alt 'whom 'it may concern:
ide it blown that l, lnua'aiunv Rosnnnnnc,
tain new and usetul lmprovements `in Col- 'lt is desirable to lapsible Containers, ot which the tollowing is a specitication,
lldy invention relates to an improved carton or receptacle preterably .made trom a single blank ot any suitable material, such as cardboard or pasteboard.
"the principal object ot the invention is to provide such a carton or receptacle which shall be capable ot compactly holding a desired number ot objects in display position, and shall have sucient capacity to hold an additional number ot objects in reserve at the same time. h turtherobject ot the invention is to so score and cut the blanh that itmay be quickly set up into condition tor use, and as quickly untolded it it be desired to place it out ot use. d still turther object is to so shape the blank that when set up it,
with its contents, may be easily shippedwithout danger ot the objects contained in the receptacle being brolren or lost..
Ithe embodiment ot the invention at present preterred by me isillustrated in the ac companying drawing, in whichliigure carton in position ot use;
llig., 2 is aside elevational view;
ltig.- 3 is a rear elevational view;
t is a substantially central verticalr sectional view; and
5 is an eutendcd view ot the blanlr` used in tornaingthe carton.
deterring hrst to lig., 5 in which the blanli is shown, the web ot cardboard or pasteboard is provided with the parallel score lines lo and ll, by means ot which the sides l2 and ld are movably joined to the upper rear wall lt. .ht its upper edge the wall lt has movably connected to it, by a score line l5,a tab or ldap lo which serves the double tunction ot an advertising card and a protective covering tor articles in the receptacle, as will be more tully hereinatter er lained..
the edge ot each side l2 and i3 may be given any desired contour, although the substantial ogee shape illustrated is preterred.. a provide each edge with a straiht portion l so that when the bou Stans upright with the sides l2 and lh par l is a trout elevational view ot the allel the lportions l'i' will otter a support tor a ledge or shelt lu'which may be laid over the parts l7 and serve to receive additional articles to be displayed.
Attached by a score. line t9 to the lower edge ot the upper rear wall ld, are the central sections which in the completed receptacle torm a horizontal article-supporting Awall 2U, an intermediate vertical wall 2l, the
base 22 .and an upstanding tront hap 23..
'llhe central sections, just named, are laterally severed trom the sides l2 and ld ttl titi
along the cuts or lines 2d and [25. Between i the walls 2U and 2l is a score line 26, and out out ot the lower edge ot the wall 2U, but integral with the wall 2l, so as to project upwardly trom the wall 2l when the latter is in vertical position, are one or more stops such as the tabs 27 to prevent articles on the wall 2U trom talling or being pushed 'iti theretrom. '.lhe sections 2l. and 22 are connected together by the score line 21tr, and the sections 22 and 23 are connected together by the score line 22a.
".llhe bottom ot the receptacle is termed bythe daps 2d and 22 which are movably attached to the lower edges ot the side walls l2 andlh, respectively, by du and 3l.. l'lhe ldap 22 is provided with a tongue 32 at its lower er edge designed to engage a slot 32 termed in the hap 29 near its upper edge, and the u per edge ot the base wall 22 is provided with a tongue hd designed to engage a second slot 35 termed in the hap 29 and eutending sub stantially at right angles to the slotl 3d.
Ven the blank is laid dat, the slot 3d eirtends horiaontally, and the slot 35 entendsv by score lines at and t5, respectively, are
daps or eutensions do and t7 which, with the blanlr Aextended dat, lie ediately above the ensions ot the bottom daps 28 and 29. 'llhese several parts are coordinated inthe manner to be described hereinatter.
Ito set up, or torin the blanlr ot Fig. 5
the score lines the score lines llt..
illu
ltltl ltlti iro into-the completed box shown inthe other figures of the drawing, the parts are manipulated in the following order The central 'sections 20 to 23 arel moved upwardly, as a tongue 32 may be inserted into the slot 33 which being done the bottom flaps are interlocked Thereupon the sections 21, 22
and 23 are moved rearwardly between the walls 12 and 13, bein bent along the lines 26 and 21. The e ect of this rearward movement -is to brin the wall 20 into horizontal position and t e wall 21 into vertical position. The bottomwall 22 rests on the ottom flap 29 and the flap 23 projects forwardly from between the side walls 12 and 13. The tongue 34 is 'then engaged in the slot 35, and the central section is interlocked with the lower section of the boX. rlhe flaps 23 and 42 are then bent upwardly parallel to each other, the aps 46 and-47 moved inwardly to lie against the outer face of flap 42, the section 39 moved upwardly against l the naps 46 and 47 on the outside front end of the receptacle, the `section 40 folded down against the inner face of section 23 and the vsection 41 moved down against and parallel to the bottom wall 22 betwee;- the `intermediate `Wall 21 and the section 23. The receptacle is now in completely set up position in readiness to receive the articles to be stored and displayed.
lt is to be understood that a carton or receptacle of the character described above may be made of almost any desired capacity,
l and the specific device herein illustrated and described will comfortably Aaccommodate a dozen relatively short rectangular packages such as packages of hair pin's or chewing gum. The space between the intermediate vertical wall 21 and the Hap 40 will hold in display position say three packages 48 while there may be placed upon the horizontal wall 20 a like number of packages 48. ln the storage space below the wall 20 and in the rear of the wall 21 there will be sui'icient room to accommodate a double row of three packages each, so that in this way the container as a whole will accommodate twelve packages. llt is to be understood that .this number is merely given for purposes of illustration and that the receptacle may be made of such size as to rewalls may be provided.
ceive agreater or less number of packages.
y Zit will also be understood that instead of having but one wall 20 a plurality of such tecnici rl`he packages resting on the wall 20 are held in position thereon by the tabs 27, the packages in front of the wall 21 are held in. position by the several thicknesses of wall at the front lower end of the receptacle, while no special means need beprovided, although it may be, to retain the articles in the storage space below the wall 20.
As indicated above a shelf 18 may be laid over the straight edges 17 and additional articles 48 may be placed on such shelf. Ordinarily this will not be desirable because the articles on such shelf 18 would either entirely or partially hide from view those resting on the wall 20.
One of the great advantages of the present device is the facility with which it may be shipped, and the contents thereof remain undisturbed. When the device is in display position the tab 1.6 st-ands upwardly and may be and in practice is provided with advertising matter. When the box with its contents is to be shipped the lap 16 is turned into a horizontal position so as to overlie the articles on the supporting wall 20, and thereafter a jacket or container of suitable size is slipped over the entire package and the latter is then ready for shipment.
l desire it to be understood that my invention is not dependent on size or proportion of parts, nor is it to be limited to the details of construction herein illustrated and described, but what l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A carton `or receptacle comprising an j integral blank and consisting of side walls, a base, and a single intermediate section oldable to provide a supporting wall and to divide approximately one half of the interior of the receptacle into oppositely arranged chambers adapted to receive articles.
2. A carton orreceptacle comprising an integral blank and consisting of side walls and base members, an intermediate section of greater length than the combined length of the said side walls and base members, said intermediate section forming a horizontal supporting` wall between the side walls intermediate their ends and a vertical intermediate wall between the side walls.
3. A carton' or receptacle comprising an integral blank and consisting of side walls,
a base, a -supporting wall eXtendin outwardly between the sidewalls at a pomt intermediate their ends whereby space is pro- L Y vided above and below said supporting wall and an intermediate wall extending from said supporting wall to said base whereby space is provided between said intermediate Wall and the front of said receptacle.
,4. A carton or receptacle comprising an i integral blank and having therein an intermediate section including a substantially rectangular portion forming an article supp porting shelf dividing the interior of naaniei said receptacle into a iront display portion t3. A carton or receptacle comprising an integral blank and consisting of side Walls, base members, means for interlochng the latter, an intermediate section 'of substantially rectangular form between the side walls, and means for interlochng the intermediate section With one of said base members.
'i'. A carton or receptacle comprising an integral blank and consisting of side Walls and base members moyably connected thereto, a rear vertical wall movably connected with the inner edges of said side walls, a horizontal supporting Wall movably connected with said rear Vertical Wall, an intermediate Vertical Wall movably connected with said supporting Wall, means on said intermediate Vertical Wall to retain articles on said supporting Wall, means for interlocking said base members, and means tor locking said intermediate Vertical Wall to one of said base members.
8. A carton or receptacle comprising anV integral blank and consisting ot side walls and base members mora-bly connected there to, a rear vertical Wall movably connected with the inner edges of said side walls, a projecting Hap movably connected With one edge of said vertical wall, a horizontal supporting Wall movably connected with the opposite edge of said vertical Wall, an interi mediate vertical wall movably connected With said supporting Wall, means projecting beyond the plane of said supporting Wall to retain articles thereon, means tor interlocking the base members, and means for locMng the intermediate vertical Wall to one of the lbase members.
